It would not have solved all of their problems but the injury to left back Erik Pieters really hurt the Netherlands. Instead of using the solid Pieters the young and untested Jetro Willems was at left back and the 18 year old was clearly not ready for this evel of play. An injury to Mathijssen and the decline of Heitinga also contributed to the defencive problems. Finally the aging of van Bommel, formerly such a key component of the Oranje's functioning on both sides of the pitch, also contributed to this breakdown. And van Maarwijk did not have the courage to drop his son in law van Bommel. But questions must also be asked about the attack. How does an attack with players like van Persie, Huntellar, Afellay, Robben, Sneijder and van der Vaart only produce 2 goals in 3 matches? Van Maarwijk has 4 years remaining on his contract but expect the KNVB, the Dutch FA, to negotiate a payoff his remaining years. It is time for the Netherlands to rebuild from this fiasco. |
