Wednesday's results, on the 2nd match day in the group: Denmark 2-3 Portugal Germany 2-1 Netherlands Apparently the Danish fans were chanting, "Messi, Messi" to Cristiano Ronaldo after his glaring misses! Those were just incredible, how does a guy who makes scoring look easy for Real Madrid, miss so badly when playing for his national team? And don't give the excuse that his teammates at Real Madrid are better. That may be true but it is not as if Nani, Varela, Helder Postiga, Joao Moutinho, et al. are poor players. And Ronaldo could be playing alongside me, my neighbor and his father-in-law and he still should have put away the two breakaways he had in this game. Not surprisingly Denmark scored and tied the game not long after Ronaldo's 2nd, and most glaring miss. That just seemed inevitable. But to Portugal's credit they bounced back and still won the game with Varela's goal. A deserved win too in my mind as Portugal were the better team for most of the match. Germany were deserving winners too. Shockingly poor defending by the Dutch, Ok they were using an 18 year old left back (Willems) which is not exactly a recipe for success against a team as talented as Germany but it was not just the youngster getting beaten badly by German attackers, all of his defensive teammates share the blame. Plus how does a team starting two notoriously tough defensive midfielders like van Bommel and DeJong still give Germany all the time in the world in midfield? So with two matches played it looks good for Germany but they are not yet qualified as the table looks like this: Germany 6 points Portugal 3 Denmark 3 Netherlands 0 Final set of games: Germany-Denmark Portugal-Netherlands |

Isn't that the truth. The Germans had so much space in midfield, neither DeJong or van Bommel bothered closing anyone down. At times it looked like a 1950s game highlights as Schweinsteiger, Khedira and Ozil had all the time they would want on the ball. Sneijder sure worked his socks off but few of his teammates did until they finally scored their goal. I think we all wonder in what mental state the Dutch will be in for their final group match versus Portugal. They are still alive but the potential for a meltdown seems there. Cristiano is saving his goals for next season with Real Madrid!

the Dutch again blow up with fighing between players Robben walking around the field showed what he thought of him been taking off, Van Bommel was way to slow for the euros. Portugal should also beat the dutch with themselfs and Germany to go through |

Unfair to 1950s football! Here's a Germany game from the 1958 World Cup and the players are getting challenged immediately and there's no free space like people would think. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJfUiFNudK8 Of course there were other games with more laissez-faire attitude but that's the same today. Actually scenes like yesterday when Schweinsteiger was allowed all the time and the space in the world to address his pass to Gomez right in front of the Dutch penalty area are not so rare in today's football as one might'd like to think. There are countless examples in topflight football each season as well as in high profile international tournaments like the Champions League, the World Cup and the European Championship. Another example was England's goal against Germany (the one that counted) in the 2010 World Cup. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hduq6joEu-c Look at 02:00, Steven Gerrard totally unchallenged for ages with acres of space at his disposal to time his cross right at the edge of the German penalty box... I guess if someone watches a game in 2050 and he sees defensive mistakes, he's gonna say "gawd looked like a game from 2010"... |

I agree with Merlin that the good people of Lviv (is that 59 in Roman numerals?) saw the best match so far. After Denmark's unlikely fightback and C. Ronaldo's improbable misses, I expected a draw; after Varela's first botched attempt at a shot I thought for just a moment, "Man, they're not getting any luck"-- then WHAM, Varela gets a second chance and blasts it inside the post. Fantastic. And boy, the Dutch just look lost. There's no consistent attack, and on Wednesday for the second straight match a striker left Heitinga in the dust. Still, by my count Holland goes through with a Danish defeat and a 2-0 win over Portugal--but I'm not seeing it. |

Good work from Germany, ok the Dutch may not have turned up for much of the match but it still is never easy beating them but the Germans made it look that way. Of course not every player in the modern game will be closed down quickly but moving about will also free yourself up and the Germans did that well, Schweinsteiger in particular. The Germans play helped make the Dutch look bad. As for Denmark-Portugal, add me to those praising the game, it was good entertainment and many of us did feel schadenfreude watching Cristiano Ronaldo miss those easy chances. But Varela saved his and Portugal's butt, and deservedly so, at times some of Portugal's play was superb. |

Why do I have this sneaking suspicion that somehow The Netherlands does enough to qualify tonight? |

It is possible but I believe I read that the Dutch will need to defeat Portugal by 2 goals then have Germany beat Denmark if the Dutch are to qualify for the quarterfinals. Not impossible but also not likely. My guess would be on Germany getting past Denmark and Portugal and Netherlands tying which would advance Germany and Portugal. |

I am with gaviota, it will be difficult for Holland to beat Portugal by 2 goals. Say what you want about Portugal but I think they have one of the better defenses in this Euro Cup and I do not see any team defeating them by 2 goals. Tonight we should earn something though about the mental strength of both Holland and Portugal. I believe it has potential to be a thrilling match and one where both will be keeping an eye out for the result in Germany-Denmark because that outcome will have an effect on how Portugal will play against the Dutch. |

Germany 2-1 Denmark Portugal 2-1 Netherlands Germany and Portugal finish 1-2 in the group after both won on Sunday. Denmark gave Germany a pretty good game and Krohn Delhi became Denmark's breakout star of this tournament as he scored another goal but Germany won it with a 1st half Podolski goal then a classic counter finished off by Lars Bender, who played right back instead of Jerome Boateng. For Portugal it was the Cristiano Ronaldo story. He brushed off his poor game against Denmark to have in my opinion the best single game performance yet in the competition. Holland scored first with a fine shot by van der Vaart but Ronaldo scored twice, hit the post, set up Nani for a goal which Stekelenburg saved brilliantly. In other words behind almost all of Portugal's best moves of the game was Ronaldo. So Germany advances to play Greece in a match which will remind us all of the Euro Zone economic crisis, while Czech Republic faces Portugal in another quarterfinal. |

Ronaldo did play very well, I think manzanares is right about Ronaldo, that was the best single game performance yet. He played like he had something to prove, and he did. If he keeps that level of play up, Portugal will be a tough team to beat in the knockout rounds. As for Holland, well apart from van der Vaart's goal and another shot of his off the post, they were pretty quiet in this game and their leaky defense once again was vulnerable to Portugal's quick breaks. The Dutch went winless in this Euro Cup only two years after playing in the World Cup Final, they are unquestionably the biggest disappointment of the tournament. |

On the other side of the coin was van der Wiel, last seen collapsing to the turf in a preposterously bad effort to mark C. Ronaldo on his second goal. How can a wingback so ordinary be chosen to start in a World Cup final? Photos of the coach? |

I think the same could be said Winslow for much of the Dutch backline. There were no Krols, Stams, DeBoers or Rijkaards in this bunch. But Winslow's question still stands, how did a defense adequate enough to help its team reach the World Cuo Final end up looking so inadequate only 2 years later? |
