What a wonderful topic and not surprisingly considering our varied backgrounds here, the list of childhood idols is very diverse. I enjoyed reading everybody's childhood rememberances. My childhood idol, Dennis Mortimer, a midfielder for Aston Villa who captained the side in perhaps their greatest achievement, beating Bayern Munich in the 1982 European Cup Final. Mortimer came to the club in the mid 70s from Coventry and I remember as a young lad being thrilled by Mortimer's energy and he quickly became the Villa player who I most admired. A clip from Mortimer scoring Villa's 2nd in a 1981 win over Liverpool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OD0kdeGCqf0 A typical Mortimer run from deep in midfield. Viewing that still brings a smile to my face.

It is really hard for me to pick out a single player as my childhood footballing idol, I was enthralled by Newell's Old Boys 1974 team which won the Torneo Metropolitano in Argentina, the first league championship Newell's ever won. What made that triumph even sweeter was it came at the expens eof city rivals Rosario Central! ![]() dafyd and I discussed this team at the start of the League History & Idols thread in the Argentina forum. And while I loved that entire Newell's team I guess if I had to pick out one player it would be the guy who dafyd also discussed starting that thread, Mario Nicasio Zanabria, the playmaker for that Newell's team who scored the goal which enabled Newell's to tie Rosario Central 2-2 and win the cuadrangular championship series against Central, Huracan (coached then by Cesar Luis Menotti) and Boca. Here from ESPN is a 13 minute show (in Spanish) interviewing some of the stars of that 1974 team and showing the championship clinching goal by Mario Zanabria, el zurdo magico (the magical left footer), perhaps the most famous goal in Newell's history. ESPN Recuerda - Newell's Campeón Metro 1974 I did not see that game but remember listening to it on the radio and going to a big asado (barbecue) at my uncle's house, with all the neighbors present, as we celebrated that title won by Newell's. It had quite an impression on me as a young boy and ensured my love of the game in general and for Newell's Old Boys in particular. |

My boyhood idol was Hugo Sanchez, I first started following him with his goal scoring exploits with UNAM then he took his acrobatic and prolific goalscoring to Europe where he triumphed first with Atletico Madrid and then Real Madrid, winning the "pichichi" (award for top scorer in Spain) a record 5 times! I loved watching Hugo Sanchez play and it was only following his retirement and him subsequently becoming a coach when I realized he was an arrogant ass. But as a young boy then later an adolescent, watching Hugol was a real thrill and he became my football idol. Watch some of Hugo's goals. |

I was reminded of this thread because today my boyhood idol died, Giorgio Chinaglia. Like Vince wrote growing up in the late 70s watching Chinaglia play for the Cosmos was a real treat. A lethal finisher he helped add to the star studded Cosmos image. Of the field he was arrogant and opinionated but I did not care, on the field he was a guarantee of goals and I feel sad today upon reading of his passing. RIP Giorgio, and thanks for the memories. |

Finally noticed this little thread that deserves to be bigger this morning. Since rosarino has already mentioned Zanabria, I'll put in a word for one of his team mates, Alfredo "El Mono" Obberti. He was not a flashy striker like Bianchi (Velez Sarsfield) or Oscar Mas (River Plate), but with 89 goals in 147 matches with Newell's he certainly got the job done. I only got to see him play for three and a half years, minus the time he spent with Grêmio in Brazil, but his first goal back with Newell's is burned in my memory... a bit warped I'm sure by time, but it is still there. His celebration for it certainly is untarnished, following the ball into the net, grabbing the back netting, screaming "GOOOOOOOL"! |
