Ha, Alex on point. You beat me here, but I will give a shout out to Los Rayados. I know they haven't played their best as of late, but they are still formidable & I will be rooting for them to show that the FC has something to offer to the Global stage. Oh btw, J-League leaders Kashiwa Reysol, reigning champions Nagoya Grampus and Gamba Osaka are involved in a tight race win the Japanese Championship & earn a spot @ the Mundial de Clubes. (just sounds better en Espanol) |

You are right Mundial de Clubes does sound better! Monterrey's season has ended in Mexico and they did not make the 8 team playoffs there but they now have the opportunity to fully concentrate on this tournament and yes it does mean a lot to them to do well in Japan. After several disappointing displays by Mexican clubs at the Mundial de Clubes Monterrey feel the pressure to change that course and I think they have to be happy about avoiding Barcelona and the African & Asian champions side of the draw. I am guessing whoever is Japan's representative will beat Auckland City and then play Monterrey which will be the Rayados opportunity to advance to a semifinal meeting with Santos and Neymar, which will be a great oocassion for the club. Santos would be favored but I do not think Monterrey would be afraid of them. First things first though and thy will have to wn that quarterfinal game. |

Kashiwa Reysol today won the Japanese league title so they will represent the host nation and will play Auckland City in the preliminary round match. The winner of that game will face Monterrey in the quarterfinals. |

Time to get this tournament going and for those of us who do not know that much about the teams outside of Barcelona, here are their Wikipedia pages with some club history and their current rosters and coach: Auckland City Kashiwa Reysol Al Sadd Esperance Monterrey Santos Barcelona A chance to get to know some of these clubs a little better. |

Not sure if anyone is keeping up on current events, but Kashiwa Reysol beat Auckland City 2-0 today. Auckland City is more like a Top-class amateur team. When I was in Auckland a few years back, most people in the street didn't know the team even existed Still props to Kashiwa. Now they play against the side I want to win it all, Los Rayados (well they are closet thing to Pachuca & the gaffer lead Los Tuzos to a MFL title)

The quarterfinal games this weekend look pretty evenly matched on paper at least: Al Sadd-Esperance Kashiwa-Monterrey Iam curious to see what these four teams have and if any of them could do what TP Mazembe did last year and pull off an upset of Santos or Barcelona in the semifinals. |

And each quarterfinal was pretty evenly played so it seems, Al Sadd 2-1 Esperance Al Sadd scores twice on practically their first two opportunites, Esperance fight back to score then controversially late in the match have two goals called off for offside then have a penalty appeal not given. Irate Esperance fans then create the first instance of crowd trouble at the World Club Cup! Kashiwa Reysol beat Monterrey 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 tie Kashiwa win an even game on penalties and become the first non continental champion to advance to the semifinals. Semifinal pairings: Santos-Kashiwa Barcelona-Al Sadd |

So two Asian clubs into the semifinals. Asia keep up their dominance of African clubs in this competition while yet another Mexican club fails to reach the semifinals. Playing in their home country, Kashiwa will have plenty of support in their semifinal vs Santos. Sure the Brazilians will be favored but Kashiwa may have the best chance of any host country champion of advancing to the World Club Cup Final. |

Wednesday is the first of two semifinals with Santos playing Kashiwa, a preview of the match. Interesting to read Kashiwa's coach Nelsinho Baptista is a former Santos player who also briefly coached the team 6 years ago. He will definitely be familiar with his opponents. Santos of course led by Neymar and Ganso, the two rising stars of Brazilian soccer plus Borges, the top scorer in the recently completed Brazilian league season. |

In a little less than 3 hours there will be the 5th place game, a match neither losing quarterfinalist really wants to play. Monterrey-Esperance. The marquee matchup though is the Santos-Kashiwa semifinal. Not only does Kashiwa have players and a coach who know Santos well, it is a team on a hot streak, last year this time Kashiwa were playing in Japan's 2nd division and clinching promotion. A little over a year later they are Japan's first division champions and playing in the World Club Cup Final. An extraordinary reversal of fortunes! |

Semifinal result: Santos 3-1 Kashiwa Reysol No hesitation at all from Santos who went for the jugular from the start with Neymar in excellent form, he scored a nice opening goal and was involved in much of Santos' work. Borges and Danilo, the latter with a free kick scored the other goals. Sakai with a header for Kashiwa. A good win for Santos. http://sports.yahoo.com/soccer/news?slug=reu-worldsantos_pix |

A pretty enjoyable game between Santos and Kashiwa. Give the Japanese credit, they played pretty well, they are battlers with good defensive order and pretty good midfield possession. But Santos are deadly in front of goal and they put away their chances to win 3-1. Santos get a little careless with the ball at times and that could be troublesome for their probable matchup with Barcelona in the final. But with the attacking talent of Neymar, Borges and Ganso they can be dangerous offensively. Early morning my time Barcelona face Al Sadd. Jorge Fossati, the Al Sadd coach is a wily fox, he led Liga de Quito to several championships, including a Copa Sudamericana and Recopa (Super Cup) title in South America but Al Sadd will have to play the game of their lives to stay close to Barcelona, even a jet lagged Barcelona. Ironic that Barcelona with their new sponsorship from the Qatari government are now playing a club from Qatar |

I agree with rosarino, Santos were well deserving victors in the semifinal and Neymar, despite his eccentricities, is a prodigious talent. I loved how he switched the ball from one foot to the other, leaving a Japanese defender trying to tackle the air, before firing in the game's opening goal with a curling shot to the opposite post. But rosarino is right I think in pointing out how Santos will have to cut down on their lack of concentration in order to defeat Barcelona in the final (assuming Barcelona win in a couple of hours) but overall Santos are a dangerous team going forward. A good semifinal matchup, hopefully the 2nd remains as good as this one. |

Barcelona won 4-0. But David Villa broke his leg, so not such good news for the Catalans, nor for Spain. |
