An article from Soccer America about Fox capturing the US Tv rights for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups: http://www.socceramerica.com/article/44374...e-big-time.html The article asks some of the questions we have done here, such as announcers to be used and what the loss of the World Cup rights will mean for both ESPN and NBC who are to televise league games beginning next season through 2015. |

The Canadian TV rights for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup rights were sold today to Bell media, which is change from CBC which had just recently acquired the rights. I would imagine nearly all of the matches will be on TSN (basically the Canadian ESPN) or TSN2. The final could be on CTV (similar to NBC/CBS/ABC), but I would expect most of the games to be on TSN. TSN had the tournament from 90-06. The company also has RDS, a french-language sister station to TSN, which will show all of the matches in french. One of the big keys to these rights was the 2015 Women’s World Cup which is in Canada. While not nearly as lucrative as the World Cup will be, it could be a massive event in a country where the women’s team has been as popular if not more popular than the men. The nice thing about CBC having the rights was that they’re a major network that everyone gets and they did a great job of televising the youth tournaments. We got unprecendented coverage of the U20s and U17s. In fact CBC had all of Canada’s U17 games on the main network. I definitely prefer TSN’s soccer coverage and I think it’s great that they’re getting back into it. They’ve been criticized heavily for not giving much play to Toronto FC on Sports Centre because they didn’t broadcast MLS games. Now that they do show a lot of MLS matches starting this season (thanks to the Vancouver/Bell tie) they seem to be getting back into it and giving it more coverage on Sports Centre and the like. They lost the Champions League when ESPN did and almost had no soccer for a year or so. In the 80s they showed a CSL game of the week and had a three-hour soccer highlights show that everyone of my generation grew up with. In recent years they’ve gone all in on hockey and CFL football and it’s paid off for them handsomely. If this helps convince them to throw their weight behind soccer that would be huge for the sport. They took the world junior hockey championships from a tournament no one paid much attention to and turned it into a Christmas tradition and one of the biggest must-watch sporting events of the year. The World Cup is easily at that stage already, but I’m thinking MLS or possibly the national teams (dare to dream) could benefit greatly if this pans out. The CFL wasn’t a hot property 10 years ago either and now it regularly kills baseball and anything else that’s not the NHL or NFL. cheers, hobbes |

Thanks for the Canadian perspective. I hope other posters from outside the US will also be able to contribute and give us their thoughts on their own country's broadcasting of the World Cup. |
