More qualifiers from Thursday's games: Schalke 04, Lokomotiv Moscow and Stoke City.

But PSG are in trouble and need to win their final game at already qualified Athletic Bilbao plus hope for some help from Slovan Bratislava when they play Salzburg.

15 of the 24 qualified teams from the group stage are already determined plus they will be joined by the 8 3rd place teams from the Champions league group stage.

Wednesday's roundup in the Europa League, actually it was a pretty dramatic day, PSG won but still did not qualify as Salzburg edged them out on a better head to head record. Dynamo kiev were 3-0 up but permitted Maccabi Tel Aviv to tie the game up, a result which eliminated Kiev and Stoke also were knocked out after leading 2-0 but finished tied 2-2 with Odense.

Assuring passage to the next round on Wednesday were Salzburg, Lazio, Besiktas, Wisla Krakow and Steaua Bucharest. the final four qualifiers will be known on Thursday.

You mean that Fulham were knocked out (last minute goal conceded at home). Stoke lost but had already qualified.

Thanks for the correction, yes Fulham are out Stoke in. Fulham, Tottenham and Birmingham all did not get out of the group stage this year. Fulham and Birmingham seemed to take the tournament seriously but Tottenham's disinterest was rewarded with their elimination. It has not exctly been a banner year for English clubs in European competition so far. But now next february is when it all starts getting interesting.

The draw by the way for both the Champions and Europa League will be on Friday, 16 December.

I am very interested as to how seriously or otherwise the two Manchester clubs take the tournament, with the two teams separated by just two points in the Premier League. Unfortunately for the competition, but perhaps fortunately for other clubs going into tomorrow's draw, I suspect they will play strongish sides in the knock-out stages but save their best players for the Premier.

In the early stages of the knockout competition, round of 32 and round of 16 (if they advance) I could see each playing a team mixed with starters and reserves (also depending on whom they are drawn against) but like practically every team in the competition, once you get to the quarterfinals, you are intent on winning it and will play as strong a side as possible.

It'll seem like I'm haunting you with corrections all day but as I speak Tottenham are still in the competition, albeit hanging on by their fingertips! :)

The general assumption is that United will put all their eggs in the PL basket, which I suppose is fair enough, especially if we're in a title race against City. The Europa League has not even been included in the club's Automatic Cup Scheme for fans, almost as if the club itself assumes that we won't be in the competition too long.

I for one hope that we take it seriously, or at the very least try out some of our talented youngsters such as Ravel Morrison, Paul Pogba and co.

Wel Sion lost their appeal to CAS

Quote:

FC Sion lost its lengthy legal fight with UEFA on Thursday, failing to win reinstatement to the Europa League in a player eligibility dispute which had threatened football’s legal structures.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld UEFA’s right to kick Sion out of the competition because the Swiss club fielded ineligible players in a playoff victory over Celtic.

With its verdict, the court also protected UEFA and FIFA, who had warned of legal anarchy if Sion won its case.

“This respect of the rules has to be applied at all levels: of players, clubs, leagues, and in all competitions, in order to preserve what football stands for,” UEFA said in a statement.

The court said the decision was “rendered unanimously by the three Swiss arbitrators comprising the arbitral panel in this case.”

I think raconteur has highlighted the best matchups of the round of 32. With the Champions league drawing out it's round of 16 over two weeks for all legs to be played, the Europa league will play 4 match days in the same time the Champions League clubs will play 2. Thus by mid March both tournaments will be ready for their quarterfinals.

Three less publicized teams I would want to avoid in this competition: Athletic Bilbao, Schalke and Udinese.

Now Sion have 36 points deducted for using ineligible players!

Quote:

Defiant Swiss club Sion have had 36 points deducted for fielding ineligible players in the league, the country’s FA (SFV) said on Friday.

The SFV’s decision came two weeks after FIFA threatened to suspend Switzerland if Sion were not punished for fielding six players who were signed in the summer when the club was subject to a transfer ban.

Sion had also defied FIFA and UEFA statutes by taking their case to the civil courts, at one stage forcing UEFA president Michel Platini to give explanations to a Swiss prosecutor.

“This points deduction is to punish the illegal behaviour of FC Sion, also contrary to the statutes and rules, by illegitimately getting around the transfer ban imposed by FIFA and fielding non-eligible players,” the SFV said in a statement.

FIFA’s executive committee, meeting in Tokyo on Dec 17, had given the Switzerland a deadline of Jan. 13 to follow its instructions or face a ban which would also result in FC Basel being expelled from the Champions League.

The SFV said it had deducted three points for each of the 12 games in which Sion had fielded any of the six players, leaving the team bottom of the league with minus five points and almost certainly condemning them relegation.

It is not exactly Europa League based but has to deal with more of the caos in the Swiss League.

Neuchatel Xamax loses Swiss League license,

A dodgy Chechen owner is the cause of this ruling.

Must have been some pretty underhanded stuff Neuchatel engaged in as not even their most famous fan Sepp Blatter could save them.

It is cases like Neuchatel, Racing Santander and Portsmouth which reminds us that supposed wealthy foreign benefactors are not encessarily a good thing, there are some sleazy characters out there and these three clubs were all suckered in.
