Palermo have been eliminated on away goals by Switzerland's FC Thun! Italian clubs sure have not been doing well in this competition. Of course the fact the Italian league is still almost 4 weeks from starting may also have had an effect on Palermo's play. |

Mainz also were eliminated by a modest club from Romania, Gaz Metan Metas. |

Other than being a Scotland-England matchup I do not see too much with Hearts and I think Tottenham can get the better of them. But those three games for the Spanish clubs will each be difficult ones and marcelo Bielsa will not have an easy time of it in his first official game in charge of Athletic, a trip to the Black Sea city of Trabzon. Hannover who start their league this weekend will have that going in their favour when playing Sevilla in what looks like a very good matchup. |

A roundup of some of the more notable games in the Europa League preliminary round: http://sports.yahoo.com/soccer/news?slug=g...playoffroundupr The big stories are Hannover eliminating Sevilla and Slovan Bratislava knocking Roma out of the competition! Athletic Bilbao advanced without playing as their opponents Trabzonspor got move dinto the Champions League to take the place of Turkish champions fenerbahce who were kicke dout of the Champions League by their own federation for match fixing. Tomorrow will be the Europa League group draw. |

Rangers, Celtic and Panathinaikos also were eliminated in the preliminary rounds. Celtic, however, might be given a lifeline as the team which defeated them Sion of Switzerland may be banned by UEFA for using players signed in the offseason when the club were supposedly still under a ban from signing players after they illegally signed an Egyptian player several years ago. Sion claim the ban had already been served, UEFA says it was postponed while Sion appealed the original decision. |

UEFA have kicked Sion out of the tournament and have reinstated Celtic who now join what looks to be a pretty difficult Group I with Atletico Madrid, Udinese and Stade Rennes. |

There's the usual thing with people treating the Europa League as an inconvenience. Spurs and Liverpool were in a 'race' for the last EL place in the final couple of games of last season, but it was pretty apparent that neither team wanted it. In the end it was Spurs who got the spot, and this is their team tonight: Cudicini; Walker, Bassong, Corluka, Townsend; Falque, Carroll, Livermore, Giovani; Kane, Pavlyuchenko I've never even heard of some of those players. Redknapp said Spurs would do their best in the competition, hmm... I reckon some of the Spurs fans who've made the trip to Salonika will regret not taking their boots, they might have got a game! |

Not every club treats the Europa League with disdain, Atletico Madrid used it to give new signings Radamel Falcao and Diego a chance to start their first games for the club and each played well and scored in Atletico's 2-0 home win over Celtic. A rundown of Thursday's opening set of group matches: http://sports.yahoo.com/soccer/news?slug=reu-europa_wrapup_1 As the article states no real upsets but I was surprised it took Dynamo Kiev an injury time goal to draw at home with Stoke City. By the way some Sion fans, took their protest about Sion getting banned from the Europa League to Madrid as it would have been Sion, not Celtic, playing Atletico Madrid if Sion had not been expelled. |

Can anyone here explain, or point me to a link, why Sion are - apparently - going to be reinstated in the competition? The European Football Union don't normally go back on previous decisions, and don't look kindly on individual clubs going to the courts, so what happened here? |

I was wondeirng the same thing, all I can think of is that while they may not fear courts in other countries, as a Swiss based organization, UEFA do fear being in contempt of a Swiss court decision and thus they may be offering Sion a lifeline in this year's Europa league. |

Platini and another UEFA official were required to give testimony this week to the investigating Swiss judge in Sion's case so Merengue's theory of UEFA fearing being in contempt of a Swiss court order sounds realistic to me. |
