I'm really looking forward to this. I haven't seen a U17 tournament in forever. I have no idea what to expect from Canada's draw, but I expect Uruguay to be very tough and Rwanda (who hosted their African qualifying tournament) to be our best bet for a win. I'm also hoping England doesn't enjoy the heat. Canada released its roster today: CANADA 1- GK- Maxime Crépeau | CAN / Académie Impact Montréal 2- M- Samuel Piette | FRA / FC Metz 3- D- Tyler Pasher | CAN / Toronto FC Academy 4- D- Ismaïl Benomar | CAN / Académie Impact Montréal 5- D- Daniel Stanese | CAN / Vancouver Whitecaps Residency 6- D- Parker Seymour | CAN / Toronto FC Academy 7- M- Marco Lapenna | CAN / Académie Impact Montréal 8- M- Bryce Alderson | CAN / Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency 9- F- Sadi Jalali | CAN / Edmonton Juventus 10- M- Keven Aleman | Unattached / sans club 11- M- Chris Nanco | CAN / Sigma FC Academy 12- M- Matteo Pasquotti | CAN / Vancouver Whitecaps Residency 13- D- Luca Gasparotto | CAN / SC Toronto 14- M- Omari Morris | CAN / Toronto FC Academy 15- M- Sergio Camargo | CAN / Toronto FC Academy 16- F- Jay Chapman | CAN / Toronto FC Academy 17- F- Yassin Essa | CAN / Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency 18- GK- Quillan Roberts | CAN / Toronto FC Academy 19- M- Alex Halis | CAN / SC Toronto 20- M- Michael Petrasso | CAN / Toronto FC Academy 21- GK- Chad Bush | CAN / Toronto FC Academy 22- D- Adam Polakiewicz | CAN / Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency 23- M- Wesley Cain | CAN / Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency Head Coach / Entraîneur-chef : Sean Fleming Assistant Coach / Entraîneur adjoint : Patrick Tobo Assistant Coach / Entraîneur adjoint : Rob Gale The big guns are Aleman and Alderson. Don't let Aleman's lack of a club fool you, TFC tried to force he and a couple of other promising academy prospects to sign multi-year deals that would have tied them to the club. Aleman decided not to because he has European aspirations. The only omission is Jordan Hamilton a big, fast striker who is still 15. Apparently if he played this cycle he would be ineligible next cycle, so they're saving him. He wouldn't have started (though he would have been a nice option off the bench), so that makes sense. We're playing Ecuador and Australia for our two prep matches. cheers, hobbes |

Here is an article from ESPN Deportes fetauring some of the players to watch in the tournament, http://espndeportes.espn.go.com/news/story...=fut&type=story The article is in Spanish but here are the players they have singled out: 1. Lucas Piazon- f (Brazil) 2. Federico Andrada- mf (Argentina) 3. Samed Yesil- f (Germany) 4. Marc Pelosi -cb (USA) 5. Memphis Depay- f (Holland) 6. Jose Francisco Cevallos -mf (Ecuador) 7. Sebastien Haller- f (France) 8. Juan Cruz Mascia - f (Uruguay) 9. Ivan Picart - gk (Panama) The only three of these players I know something about are Lucas Piazon, Cevallos and Picart. Piazon ahs already been sold to Chelsea but he will not be able to play for them until 2012, in the meantime he is on Sao Paulo's reserve team. Cevallos is the son of the goalkeeper by the same name who won the Copa Libertadores with Liga de Quito in 2008 and was a runnerup in that tournament with Ecuador's Barcelona SC in 1998. In addition the elder Cevallos was Ecuador's goalie when they made their historic first World Cup qualification in 2002. The father retired at the end of this past season but did have the chance to play a few professional games with his son who is regarded as a bright midfield prospect. Picart the Panamanian goalie is the other player I am familiar wth and he is highly thought of, a good shot stopper who some are viewing as the future replacement for Jaime Penedo in Panama's senior national team's goal. |

Many thanks autogol. I've seen precious little written about this tournament which is disappointing. I haven't followed it much in the past or had much chance to see it (I did watch Mexico win in 05), but I always felt it was a pretty big deal. Certainly it seems like the next big names all start to get talked about after the U17s. By the U20s they're already stars and have moved on to big clubs. I'm looking forward to this because the last time Canada was there I was nearly still eligible to play as a U17! I've been trying to follow Canada's group a little. Canada lost 1-0 to Ecuador and 2-1 to Australia in their prep matches. England beat Ivory Coast 5-4 in a remarkable game that saw England lead 2-0 and trail 4-2 before coming back. Like most Canadian sides we qualified thanks to strong defence, though there is a little flair in the attack. Still I expect goals will be hard to come by and tomorrow's match against Uruguay to be our toughest test. cheers, hobbes |

The home country got off to a good start with a 3-1 win over North Korea while in the same group Congo beat Holland 1-0. France scored 3 first half goals and dominated Argentina 3-0 while Japan defeated Jamaica 1-0 in Group B play. Groups C and D play today, Uruguay-Canada and Rwanda-England in C, USA-Czech Republic and Uzbekistan-New Zealand in D. hey hobbes FIFA need to hold more World Cups at all levels in Mexico, seems a Mexican World Cup is a guarantee that Canada will be present! ![]() |

Merengue> we're even in Group C again! ![]() In my decades of following Canada that might have been the most frustrating game I’ve ever seen us play. In four appearances at the U17s, Canada has no wins, no draws and 12 losses. We’ve scored four goals and given up 42. So clearly we’re massive underdogs at this level and facing the CONMEBOL runners-up. Uruguay shaded the first half, but Canada had two excellent chances that Michael Petrasso flubbed. Early in the second half a Uruguyan flicked the ball off of the chest of Gasparotta, who then sheperded the ball out for a corner kick for Uruguay. I have no idea why he didn’t play the ball. The corner was awful, but took a short hop in front of captain Bryce Alderson who managed to flick it into a more dangerous spot, where centre half Stranese flicked it on to the penalty spot where Juan Cruz Mascia buried his chance. Canada then spent the next 30 minutes having the better of possession and while rarely threatening to score, Aleman did force a nice save and Gasporotta didn’t miss by much on a header. With five minutes left I’m thinking the new backline looks excellent. Our pace has caused Uruguay danger. Piette, Alderson and Aleman — the heart of the team — don’t look out-classed in the centre of the midfield. And Maxime Crépeau in goal was fantastic and playing extremely confidently. Not only am I thinking we might win a game, but I’m wondering if us keeping it at 1-0 might mean a draw with England could get conceivably get us through . . . And I’m thinking ‘if only we hadn’t given them a goal on a silver platter through a trio of horrible mistakes’ . . . and then it all went horribly wrong. Poor Adam Polakiewicz, who came in at left back and was superb dealing with Mascia and the more dangerous Juan San Martin, was called for a PK. On first viewing it was awkward and seemed possibly a good call, but on the replay, the Uruguyan attacker tried to half-volley a bouncing ball on a rebound while Polakiewicz tried to challenge him from behind. The Uruguyan missed the ball and fell over before Polakiewicz even touched him. They converted to make it 2-0 and then disaster struck. Mascia was offside but collided heavily with Crépeau in the 89th. Crépeau left the match and looks lost for the tournament with a knee injury. I would give Mascia the benefit of the doubt because it was a 50-50 ball (and not that late after the whistle), but he left his leg in and tripped Crépeau earlier in the match after Crépeau had beaten him to a loose ball. To compound the agony Quillan Roberts came in and decided to race off of his line to the edge of the area and was easily chipped by Elbio Alvarez for 3-0. So we suffered a heavy defeat seriously denting our hopes of advancing. We lost our keeper who apparently is considered our best prospect by European scouts and our backup keeper looked shocking in two minutes he played. And the worst part is, I’m not even sure we deserved to lose! I expected to lose this match about 3-0, but having played so well and feeling good about the performance to feeling hopeless about the whole tournament in about five minutes has kind of floored me. The Mexican crowd was quite good. Fairly noisy and a good turnout. cheers, hobbes |

I caught some of the US' 3-0 win over the Czech Republic although I was mostly watching the Gold Cup semifinal between Panama and El Salvador. An impressive win with some nice goals, especially the first by the impressive US # 10 Alejandro Guido and the 3rd by reserve forward Alfred Koroma who not only wears #7 like Robinho but did a Robinho like 3 stepovers before beating his man and shooting to the far post. Even the Mexican fans who ahd been whistling the US all game long cheered that goal. The 2nd goal was converted by Esteban Rodriguez. New Zealand also had a 3 goal win in the group defeating Uzbekistan 4-1. England also won today in canada's group as they defeated Rwanda 2-0. |

It's a funny old game. Today Canada played England. I felt England was better than Uruguay and I felt Canada's performance was not nearly as good as it was in their 3-0 loss to Uruguay. And yet Canada picked up its first point in 14 attempts in U17 history with a 2-2 draw. The only thing anyone will talk about in this match is the fact that Canada tied the game in the 87th minute on a goal from their goalkeeper Quillan Roberts who scored from his own half. Roberts came in for Crépeau (who is out for the tournament) and looked not bad. He wasn't great on either goal, but I think he made up for it with his dramatic equalizer. I'm not really sure what happened to Pickford, the English keeper, on the goal. No one closed Roberts down he just kept inching forward after taking a back pass. It was raining and a similar high hop had made the English keeper look a touch uncomfortable early, but I was still stunned when it went right over Pickford's head. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n87oKk4BnPI After scoring four goals in 13 matches we scored twice in the same match! It might be progress. Also nearly 18,000 in the rain in Pachuca. I've got to give the Mexican supporters a lot of credit. The crowds and the atmosphere were significantly better than they've been for the U21 Euros. Almost as shocking was Group D where the U.S. beat the Czechs 3-0 and NZ beat the Uzbeks 4-1 on day 1. Now everyone's even on three points as the Czechs beat NZ 1-0 and Uzbekistan stunned the U.S. 2-1. In a result that seems good for Canada, Uruguay scored in the 95th minute to beat Rwanda 1-0. cheers, hobbes |

What a goal by Roberts! Something he will never forget as the announcer noted. And thanks to that goal Canada are still alive in the group. The unpredictbility of this tournament makes it pretty fascinating I think. These players are still so green that they go through so many ups and downs. |

An astounding goal, hobbes, thanks for the link! Also astoundingly poor positioning by the England keeper. No reason for him to be anywhere but back on his line in that situation, or a least far enough back so nothing like that could possibly happen. Sadly, he will never forget that goal either......it is a silly old game... |

Ivory Coast's Souylemane Coulibaly probably has been the player of the tournament, he scored all 8 goals for his country in group play and yesterday in the round of 16 he scored 1 of the Ivorians two goals in their game vs France giving him 9 in total. But the French came from 0-2 down to win 3-2 and end Coulibaly's tournament. But that is a name to watch for in the future. The quarterfinal matchups: Sunday Uruguay-Uzbekistan Japan-Brazil Monday Germany-England France-Mexico Sunday's winners meet in one semifinal with the victors on Monday meeting in the other. |

Sunday's results: Uruguay 2-0 Uzbekistan Japan 2-3 Brazil Uruguay and Brazil advance to meet in an all South American semifinal. Brazil were 3-0 in front of Japan before the Japanese with 2 late goals made it interetsing at the end. Adryan of Brazil was very impressive to me. |

What a dramatic semifinal as Mexico came from behind vs Germany and beat the Germans 3-2. Mexico went up early through Julio Gomez but Germany responded and led 2-1 when first a gol olimpico (one directly from a corner) by Jorge Espericueta then a last minute bicycle kick by Gomez (his 2nd goal of the game) gave Mexico a 3-2 win and a spot in the final. There they will play Uruguay who defeated Brazil 3-0 in a surprisingly easy win foor the charruas. So Uruguay goes for their first U17 crown while Mexico looks to win its second, 6 years after it's historic triumph in Peru. With the heart this group of kids are showing, another title is a real possibility. |
