A pair of excellent games on Sunday. Unfortunately for me it will not be a pleasant day at work tomorrow, a Spaniard working in Brasil, after Brasil beat Spain on penalties after an exciting 2-2 tie. France defeated Nigeria 3-2 in the other semifinal. Nigeria scored a game tying goal just before the end of the added on time at the end of 90 minutes but in the extra time France scored twice to win the match with Nigeria getting a late consolation goal. So one semiifnal will be an all European one: Portugal-France while the other will be an all Americas one, Mexico-Brasil. A Europe versus Americas final. |

These quarterfinals were very entertaining, except for Portugal-Argentina which was a defensive struggle. Good work from Mexico's sub 20 team which beat Colombia in Bogota. These boys showed a lot of heart, good discipline and some calmness in front of goal to withstand the pressure of the home team. There is not a single standout on this Mexican team but they play very well as a team and do have some players, notably Araujo, Reyes, Enriquez, Davila and Torres who should become regular contributors to the full national team in the not too distant future. I thought when Nigeria scored that very late goal to send their game into extra time that they would have the momentum but France responded well with LaCazette and Kakuta both playing extremely well. As for Brazil-Spain, well that game was a real joy, it could have gone either way and the fact it eventually was decided on penalties was not really a surprise. So Mexico now have the tough job of facing Brazil, all the pressure will be on the South Amricans, if Mexico play calmly and display their defensive order they will hae a chance against the tournament favorites. |

A tough loss for Spain last night in a very thrilling game. A good day for futbol, first the Spanish Super Copa ends 2-2 then Espana-Brasil sub 20 ends with the same score. But Gabriel the Brasilian goalie wth a pair of big saves in the shootout. That was the difference in a very even match. A tough way for Spain to go out of the tournament but this group of Spanish players have some talent and we should hear more from them soon. |

Portugal and Brazil will meet in the final after each won their semfinals 2-0. Portugal defeating France with a goal in each half and more fine goalkeeping from Mika who has yet to give up a single goal in 6 matches! Brazil defeated Mexico 2-0 with 2 goals by henrique in the final 10 minutes of what was a pretty even match. Tough loss for Mexico who i thought played pretty well but they just could not get one in the net while Henrique took advabtage of his chances and won the game. Sets up what should be a pretty even final but as a Mexico fan I am proud of Mexico's advancement to the semifinals, the farthest the team have ever advanced in an U20 tournamnt. |

I honestly did not expect Brasil's U20 team to advance this far with both neymar and Lucas Moura, the two best players on the team both misisng this U20 World Cup. But the team have been solid and Oscar in particular has come up with the big plays for this team. Phillipe Coutinho has done well too and tonight Henrique and Dudu lifted the team in a close game against Mexico. Portugal with their excellent defense will be a difficult opponent in the final but this Brasil team is making a believer out of me. This whole U20 tournament has been one where teamwork, above individual players, has been what has stood out. In other words, the best teams are winning with their collective play not because of their individuals. |

Like Alexao I too was not really expecting this bunch of Brasil sub 20 players to make the final without Neymar and Lucas. But to their credit they have played pretty good football along the way and have been plying well as a team. gabriel in goal ahs made some good saves, Bruno Uvini may not be the quickest defender but he positions himself well, the midfield work hard and move the ball around quickly and if there is one standout on this current group of Brasilian players, it is Oscar, the Internacional attacking midfielder. Portugal are a counter attacking team with obviously a strong defense, zero goals permitted in the tourney. But Brasil can beat them if they maintain their calm and pass the ball around they eventually will find the holes in Portugal's defense. It has not been a sub 20 World Cup dominated by great teams or players but it has I think been an evenly matched tournament with as others previously wrote, ruled by teams who put the collective above the individual. |

Brasil campeao! An exciting final to the U20 World Cup, Brasil with a 3x2 win after extra time. All 3 goals by Oscar, the final a great goal from an angle which went over Mika the Portuguese goalie's head. No fault of the keeper it was just a great shot. An early goal by Oscar opened the game up but Portugal equalized not long after when Gabriel could not grab a looping shot by Alex. In the 2nd half Portugal took the lead with a goal by Oliveira, a low angled shot which somehow got by Gabriel who did not have the best of games. But Dudu again coming in off the bench, spun away from his defender shot towards goal, it was batted away by Mika and Oscar was well positioned to volley in the game tying goal. Late in regulation Cayetano the sub for Portugal had a breakaway but Gabriel redeemed himself with a championship saving stop (much like what Casillas did to Robben in last year's World Cup.) On to extra time where Brasil began to assert themselves again and Oscar, who reminds me a lot of a young Kaka (and not just because both are/were Sao Paulo players) scored his wonderful championship winning goal. A very entertaining and open final between two pretty evenly matched teams but in a tourney where we said no individuals really stood out, it was Oscar and his 3 goals which won the title for Brasil. |

Well done to Brazil and especially Oscar their title winning hero. I am not sure if he meant to shoot or cross that game winning goal but whatever the intent it was a fantastic goal and a great way to win a title in extra time. Mexico beat France 3-1 to take 3rd place. The French went in front 1-0 but goals by Ulises Davila, Jorge Enriquez and Edson Rivera gave Mexico 3rd place, matching the nation's best ever finish in a U20 World Cup (in the inaugural tournament in 1977.) |

Congratulations to our Brasilian fans here on Brasil obtaining the U20 title. A very exciting final put the closure on one of the more even U20 tournaments in recent memory. Brazil's goalie Gabriel with two uncharacteristic mistakes which led to Portugal's 2 goals but as Alexao wrote, Gabriel did redeem himself with that fine save on a breakaway towards the end of regulation. What can you say about Oscar? A magnificient performance, one of the best I have ever seen in a final at any level. His club will have trouble holding on to him now. I am very proud of Mexico's 3rd place finish, it closes out an excellent summer for Mexican national teams, Gold Cup champions, U17 World Champions and now 3rd place in U20. The future looks very good for Mexico. |

A terrific final finished in extra time. Always good when it can be done without penalty shots imo. Congrats to Brasil fans. Portugal seemed to run out of gas and/or determination, as Brasil began to overwhelm in the late portions of the match. I am going to go ahead and believe that the final goal was indeed a shot on frame by Oscar. Watching body direction, his leg swing, and focus it all seemed to be on frame, not a effort at a cross at a sharper angle to his direction. Have to agree with Dr. Z as well, Mexico is on a bit of a tear this year. We will see how it carries into WCQ's. |
