I vaguely remember watching a tape of an early 1970s European Cup game where one team "pressed" really hard. The telling episode was that the tv commentator remarked in a displeased way "they are not leaving any space to them". Like if it was a negative tactic, not giving the other team the chance to show what they can do on the ball. The beauty of the game was "pressed" out of the game, that somehow was the commentator's view of that tactic. I just mention this because today if you "press well" you are lauded by tv pundits. But there are different ways of approaching this game of football. A romantic view might be to just let both teams prove how well they can "play" football. |

I read a columnist in England the other day saying that the chief achievement or 'calling card' of Mourinho's career has been his ability to stop other teams playing football, and that while this was worthy of grudging respect it was nevertheless a dubious kind of glory. That strikes me as similar to the 1970s view you just described. |

....so true about Mourino, as has been testified to by our Madrid fans on this board. But the really sad and striking thing is that in his case his present team did not "need" to utilize such ultra defensive tactics, in fact that kind of play helped to defeat themselves in the UEFA semis, when in fact they have the skill at all positons to attack and "play soccer". Ironic.
