There is a lot of support for Xavi here let us see if the voters agree with us as on Monday the winner should be announced. |

And the winner is......... Lionel Messi First time I can recall in a World Cup year where the winner did not have a particularly good World Cup. But Messi's play with Barcelona in 2010 was so dominant that I think we can understand why he won even if Xavi and to a lesser extent Iniesta also would have been good chocies too (as would have been Wesley Sneijder.) |

58 goals in all competitions in 2010 is why Lionel Messi won. |

Yes 58 goals were enough to overcome the World Cup advantage Xavi and Iniesta had and the four titles won by Sneijder. |

According to Spanish daily AS, http://www.as.com/futbol/articulo/balon-or...asdasftb_56/Tes The voting as we know was a conglomeration of the old FIFA vote coming from the coaches and captains of each national team with the France Football system of votes from their correspondents around the world. Per AS if the prizes had been kept separately, Messi would have won the FIFA World Player of the year based on votes from the coaches and captains of each national team, while Wesley Sneijder would have won the Balon d'Or based on voting from the France Football correspondents. Interesting. P.S. Apparently the Dutch did not comprehend well that the coach and captain were not able to vote for a player from their own team, both Bert van Marwijk's and Mark van Bommel's had some of their votes annulled for voting for a countryman! |

Don't know about his father-in-law, but I still maintain that Van Bommel's ballot was invalidated because he kicked holes through it with his studs. |

After the way Holland embarrassed themselves last summer I am not too surprised neither van marwijk or van Bommel were able to follow instructions! Very interesting story from AS that Wesley Sneijder would have won the Balon d'Or in voting by the media. Interesting that coaches and managers were more swayed by Messi. |

Yes it is fascinating that there would be such a divergence in opinion between the two sets of voters. So much so that Sneijder who won only in polling among the correspondents still did not gather enough votes to finish overall in the top three! I guess it took an extraordinary season by Messi, scoring 58 goals in order to deprive the World Cup champions from having the world player of the year. |

I think this says it all, Messi is extraordinary but this was Xavi's year and to deny him the reward when Spain were World Cup champions is baffling. And as others wrote what is surprising is that the journalists actually selected Sneijder while the coaches and captains of all of FIFA's national teams picked Messi. They were the ones more swayed by Messi's constant presence in the media. |

Yes 58 goals were enough to overcome the World Cup advantage Xavi and Iniesta had and the four titles won by Sneijder. This is why Messi won this award and come on that is such an incredible season that it outweighed what the other players mentioend did in the World Cup that Messi was not able to achieve. |
