The FIFA and France Football prizes have been merged into one and the nominees this year for world player of the year are: Iker Casillas (Spain, Real Madrid), Daniel Alves (Brazil, Barcelona), Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast, Chelsea), Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon, Inter Milan), Cesc Fabregas (Spain, Arsenal), Diego Forlan (Uruguay, Atletico Madrid), Asamoah Gyan (Ghana, Stade Rennes, then Sunderland), Andres Iniesta (Spain, Barcelona), Julio Cesar (Brazil, Inter Milan), Miroslav Klose (Germany, Bayern Munich), Philipp Lahm (Germany, Bayern Munich), Douglas Maicon (Brazil, Inter Milan), Lionel Messi (Argentina, Barcelona), Thomas Mueller (Germany, Bayern Munich), Mesut Ozil (Germany, Werder Bremen, then Real Madrid), Carles Puyol (Spain, Barcelona), Arjen Robben (Netherlands, Bayern Munich), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal, Real Madrid), Bastian Schweinsteiger (Germany, Bayern Munich), Wesley Sneijder (Netherlands, Inter Milan), David Villa (Spain, Valencia, then Barcelona), Xabi Alonso (Spain, Real Madrid), Xavi Hernandez (Spain, Barcelona) Typically in a World Cup year the prize goes to a member of the World Cup winning team but Spain really does not have one dominant player but many very good ones. I mean should Xavi, Iniesta, Villa, Puyol or Casillas merit selection? The large quantity of Spanish candidates might mean the top prize goes to Wesley Sneijder who not only won three titles with Inter but scored 5 World Cup goals in leading Holland to the final. Then of course there are the two players who have won the last two awards, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, neither of whom had great World Cups but each of whom are playing extremely well for their clubs. And finally I need to mention the winner of the top player prize at the World Cup, Diego Forlan who in addition to leading his unheralded nation to the WC semifinals also led his club to the Europa League crown. It is going to be a very fascinating vote this year. Biggest omission in my eyes-Diego Milito, the star of Inter Milan's Champions League win. |

Forlan came to my mind immediately ahead of all others. Looking at this last year, he is who I would choose first for my side in a game of back yard ball.

Manzanares makes a very valid point that the many legitimate candidates from Spain could open up the prize for someone like Sneijder, Messi, Ronaldo or Forlan to win it. I think more than just the World Cup should go into consideration. Obviously it is the principle event of the year but those who played well in their leagues or in continental championships also deserve mention. And sadly once again no South American based players have been considered even though say Andres D'Alessandro played a key role in his club Internacional winning the Copa Libertadores. And I agree with Manzanares that Diego Milito should also have made this list. I would have picked him ahead of Xabi Alonso. |

The continued oversight of South American players and coaches in general for recognition like this is undeniable, but it did not help our hemisphere's cause to have an all Euro final in the World Cup, 3 of 4 finalists Euro as well....

It is a legitimate point that the multiple Spanish candidates could open it up for someone else and the four named alternatives-Sneijder, Ronaldo, Messi and Forlan are all good candidates but I can not help think this year's prize will go to Xavi with Iniesta as an outside chance. Xavi is the focal point for both Spain's and Barcelona's attack, the best passer since Zinedine Zidane and I think he is the prime candidate for this award. |

The final three for the award have been named and they are Xavi, Iniesta and Messi. First time since van Basten, Gullit and Rijkaard were the top three in 1988 and 1989 that all top three are from the same club. So much for our theory that the Spanish candidates could open it up for somebody not playing in Spain! |

IMHO I have to agree w/ this sentiment:
For Club & Country this guy has done everything right. I feel he should be ahead of Messi, but everyone adores him. |

What has Sneijder done since the World Cup ended? Precious little and neither has Diego Forlan which is why neither of them made the cut for the final 3. This prize in World Cup years, although often determined by World Cup play is not exclusive to World Cup play and club work both before and after the WC does also matter. For the record Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport are reporting that Andres Iniesta will win the award. He's a wonderful player and scored the game winner in the World Cup but of the three I think he has had the poorest year overall in 2010 and missed parts of the first half of the club season at Barcelona with injury. Normally I would give it to Messi as he is the world's best player but he did not have the best of World Cups while his club mate Xavi has been superb both for club and country in 2010. This should be his year to win the prize. Plus at his present rate Messi probably has another 3-5 Player of the Year awards in his future, thus this should be Xavi's year. |

You can not help but admire all three candidates, each is sensational in his own way. But I find myself agreeing with Yogi's sentiment that this should be Xavi's year. He was a main focus of Spain's World Cup winning attack plus is the engine for Barcelona's wonderful team. Iniesta is great but I thought Xavi was better for both Spain and Barcelona and while Messi would edge his teamamtes probably just based on club play alone, their superior World Cups give them the edge I think over Lionel. Plus as Yogi writes, Messi likely has many more Player of the Year awards awaiting him. Who knows if the older Xavi will? |

I love Andres Iniesta, he is my favourite current player and I will be eternally thankful to him for scoring the goal that gave Spain the World Cup but he was injured through a good part of the first half of 2010. I think Wesley Sneijder would have made a better choice for a finalist than Iniesta. Sneijder may not be playing the best in the 2nd half of 2010 but his first half of 2010 with Inter and his World Cup were fantastic. Definitely enough to become one of the three finalists. But my choice for this year's prize winner would be Xavi for all of the reasons others already gave. |

I know he did not have the greatest of World Cups but he also was not a bust either and with his club he scoring at a rate of almost a goal a game. Xavi and Iniesta are each wonderful players and they did win the World Cup but Lionel Messi is having as good an individual club season as any player has had since I think Ronaldo had in 1996-7 when he was with Barcelona. So to me I think Messi deserves the award this year. |

Messi is the best player in the world and Iniesta will never have to pay for dinner anywhere that Spaniards run restaurants, but Xavi should win the Ballon d'Or. |

These are my thoughts too, Messi is the best and is having an incredible year but this was a World Cup year and when a player like Xavi has mixed a good World Cup with a fine club season in both halves of 2010 and caps it off by being a key part of the World Cup winning team then I think he should win the prize. Iniesta is a wonderful player but as others pointed out, he missed part of the first half of 2010 with injuries. If the award was given just after the World Cup then Sneijder could have won it but he and Diego Forlan both had disappointing 2nd halves of the year and that would prevent eithe rof them from finishing ahead of Xavi in my eyes. |

Have to agree with Xavi. It's just a shame that Messi was handicapped at the World Cup, along with the rest of the Argentine team, by having Maradona as coach. |

The only person who has been able to stop Messi! ![]() Give it to Xavi this year because Messi probably has another 3-5 more of these prizes he will win before his career is over. Let Xavi, a magnificient playmaker, have his chance. |
