The draw has been announced for this year's World Club Cup which again will be held in Abu Dhabi, UAE from December 8-18. The African and Asian representatives are not yet known. Play-in match Al Wahda (United Arab Emirates) vs. Hekari United (Papua New Guinea) Quarterfinals African Champions League winner (TP Mazembe [DR Congo] or Esperance [Tunisia]) vs. Pachuca (Mexico) Asian Champions League winner (Zob Ahan [Iran] or Seongnam [South Korea]) vs. Al Wahda or Hekari United Semifinals Internacional (Brazil) vs. African champion or Pachuca Inter Milan (Italy) vs. Asian champion, Al Wahda or Hekari United The big surprise to me is Oceania's champion is not from New Zealand but is a club from Papua New Guinea! So what are the odds on they winning the tournament?

New Zealand's best club side, the New Zealand Knights (from Auckland) (also known as the cringe-inducing "Football Kingz"), play in the Australian league, and are therefore presumably inelligible for the Oceania championship. |

Good point ursus but the past few World Club Cups have had other New Zealand clubs representing Oceania. This has to be the first time I can recall any club or national team from Papua New Guinea in a FIFA competition. So the New Zealand Knights (what is with the Football Kingz? That sounds like a name from one of the US lower leagues) must be the only club in the world who are located in a country belonging to one confederaton (Oceania) but play in a league affiliated with another confederation (Asia). It would be the same as a Mexican based club playing in say the Colombian league. Israeli clubs may be physically located in Asia but play in UEFA competitions and their national federation (Israel) is not a member of the Asian confederation. |

From memory, there was NZ participation in the Oceania Club Championship, Waitakere United and someone else (Auckland?) but they just lost to Hekari. Shock result, but they did have their chance to qualify for Abu Dhabi, I don't think it was down to eligibility. |

just discovered that Mo Molina is playing for AFC Champs Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma. I remembered when he was running for DIM back in the day. Man this guy was supposed to be the next Valderama. Oh well, it's good to see him on another big stage. BTW, Chunma (Pegasus) will play the on Saturday vs. the winner of the play-in match between Al Wahda or Hekari United. Can't wait. |

This tournament starts this week and with the way Inter Milan have been playing, I wonder if they are vulnerable in their semifinal which likely will be against Seongnam, the Asian champion. Asia's clubs have typically been the best performing clubs from outside Europe and South America. Every year we wonder if this will be the year a European or South American club gets eliminated before reaching the semifinals and with Inter Milan's current form that is once again a legitimate question to ask now. |

Well Inter Milan are now losing 2-0 to Werder Bremen in the European Champions League. Yes I would say they are vulnerable now. Will Rafael Benitez be in trouble if his club doe snot return from the UAE with the title? robdog, Mauricio "Mao" Molina also did pretty well with Santos in Brazil. There is discussion about him in the Asian Champions League thread. |

I would not read too much into Inter Milan losing a Champions League game when they are already qualified for the next round and were using a lot of reserves. Now their numerous injuries going into the World Club Cup is another story. |

Al Wahda 3-0 Hekari United So the host nation's champions beat the part timers from Papua New Guinea. Not as lopsided a score as might have been expected though. Tomorrow the tournament starts for real though with what looks like an even match Pachuca-TP Mazembe. On Saturday Al Wahda will play Asian champions Seongnam. |

I'm sure that this will be a fine competition and may the best team win and all that stuff! But...is there anyone else on here left completely cold by the whole thing? I just can't begin to take it seriously. Or is my reaction a typically British one? (Sorry for treading on any toes or sensibilities here, but I couldn't hold back any longer!) |

I enjoy this competition and as a fan of Mexican futbol I am hoping one year, maybe even this year, a Mexican club can pull off an upset of one of the favored European or South American teams. I think Inter Milan's current struggles may put some neutral fans like Sporting off of the competition but last year for example with Barcelona and Estudiantes playing a fascinating final there was plenty of interest in the competition. If I recall Estudiantes brought about 5,000 fans to the UAE to see their matches while Barcelona, with their international "brand" had plenty of fans coming out to see Messi, Xavi and Iniesta. I read a week or so ago that Inter Milan will have between 2-3,000 of their own fans traveling to the tournament plus of course as a club viewed often in the Middle East they will also attract plenty of neutrals living in the UAE too. And I am sure Internacional of Brazil will have a good traveling party too. I like that FIFA have opened this tournamnet up to more than just the European & South American elite clubs. Sure Pachuca, Seongnam and TP Mazembe are not as strong as Inter Milan or Internacional but one day soon a club from outside Europe or South America will pull off an upset and advance to the final. This is part of the opening up of the world's game to other continents and is I feel a good thing for the sport. Why can't a fan of Pachuca or Seongnam dream of their team playing Inter Milan in a meaningful tournament? |

A preview of Friday's quarterfinal match between Pachuca and TP Mazembe: Pachuca vs TP Mazembe Note from the article that Mazembe's Tresor Mputu is still suspended following an attack on a referee in an African Champions League game. Reading Pachuca's coach Pablo Marini's comments, I agree with him that Pachuca need to rely on their passing game in order to have success. When on they have a very elegant team who can move the ball around well. |
