A reason why Germany pulled off one of the great upsets in World Cup Finals history? http://sports.yahoo.com/soccer/news?slug=a...wc1954gerdoping Germany's legendary 1954 World Cup winning side are said to have been injected with the banned substance methamphetamine, a new university study has revealed. Germany lifted their first World Cup title in Berne, Switzerland, when they beat Hungary 3-2 in the final and shocked the eastern European side led by the legendary Ferenc Puskas, but the study claims the winners were doped. Despite highly-fancied Hungary taking a 2-0 lead after just eight minutes, underdogs Germany fought back at Berne's Wankdorf Stadium with winger Helmut Rahn scoring twice, including hitting the 84th-minute winner. The study, published on Monday, says the team, dubbed 'the heroes of Bern', believed they received vitamin C injections before the final, but were actually given methamphetamine, a substance given to German troops in World War II. The study by Leipzig University, called 'Doping in Germany' and funded by the German Olympic Committee, is due to be published in 2012 and reveals doping was first used in high-level sport in West Germany as early as 1949. |

ROFLMAO You know many pharmacy stores are now limiting the amount of Sudafed you can buy because people were stocking up on that and using it to make methamphetamine! There has been rumors that Italy's 1982 team also were involved in some sort of doping which gave them greater stamina. Hard to prove these things all the way back from 1982 much less 1954. But as the original article mentions meth aka speed was given during World War II to German and Japanese troops to increase their alertness and energy. |

This story has been around for ages, with the early versions grounded in the apparent discovery of used syringes in the dressing room West Germany used at the Wankdorf for the final. It was discussed openly at the time of the 50th anniversary celebrations of Der Wunder von Bern, but no clear evidence was available at that time. It will be interesting to see if this article changes that calculus. |

From an additional article on the matter, “Pervitin was at that time widely used in many sports and amphetamines were said to be also used by South America players,” Eggers said. “What is suspicious is that these injections to German players were distributed secretly and the only reason they became known was because those who got injected contracted jaundice.” http://sports.yahoo.com/soccer/news?slug=reu-dopingworldcup I suppose the argument is that at the time doping was not prohibited so while we may look abck at this, if these allegations are true, as something which could stain that great West German upset, what they did was not at the time illegal. |

I had read before about some of the players contracting jaundice after the tournament. But I had always thought the reason behind West Germany's win was that Ferenc Puskas played the final on one leg. |

Puskas' injury was always my impession too of why Hungary lost that 1954 final. I suppose the argument is that at the time doping was not prohibited so while we may look abck at this, if these allegations are true, as something which could stain that great West German upset, what they did was not at the time illegal. The same argument many in baseball have used to justify the steroid enhanced era in that sport. |

"Dorothee Alfermann of the University of Leipzig said the study itself had not covered the subject of the 1954 World Cup team until now, but that Eggert had presented his theory in an earlier publication and had briefly touched on the subject during Monday’s presentation of the broader doping study." So actually it's just the same rumour we already heard about years ago. |

Wait a minute so what you are saying is the original article linked here saying there was this Univ. of Leipzig study on doping in general which mentions the 1954 World Cup winning team as having taken methamphetamine before the final, is false and the study's author only briefly touches on the subject? I ask because it sounds from the original article that the study won't be published until 2012 but that parts of it had been released to the public. |
