So defending champions Atletico were eliminated in the group stage as were runaway German league leaders Borussia Dortmund. Disappointing for both but there is the consolation that each, with different goals, can now concentrate fully on their league play. Here is the draw for the round of 32 and round of 16 in the Europa League: (Home teams listed first) First leg Tuesday, Feb. 15 Aris (Greece) vs. Manchester City (England) Thursday, Feb. 17 Anderlecht (Belgium) vs. Ajax (Netherlands) BATE Borisov (Belarus) vs. Paris Saint-Germain (France) Basel (Switzerland) vs. Spartak Moscow (Russia) Benfica (Portugal) vs. Stuttgart (Germany) Besiktas (Turkey) vs. Dynamo Kiev (Ukraine) Glasgow Rangers (Scotland) vs. Sporting Lisbon (Portugal) Lech Poznan (Poland) vs. Braga (Portugal) Lille (France) vs. PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands) Metalist Kharkiv (Ukraine) vs. Bayer Leverkusen (Germany) Napoli (Italy) vs. Villarreal (Spain) PAOK Thessaloniki (Greece) vs. CSKA Moscow (Russia) Rubin Kazan (Russia) vs. Twente (Netherlands) Sevilla (Spain) vs. Porto (Portugal) Sparta Prague (Czech Republic) vs. Liverpool (England) Young Boys (Switzerland) vs. Zenit St. Petersburg (Russia) Second leg Tuesday, Feb. 22 CSKA Moscow (Russia) vs. PAOK Thessaloniki (Greece) Porto (Portugal) vs. Sevilla (Spain) Thursday, Feb. 24 Ajax (Amsterdam) vs. Anderlecht (Belgium) Bayer Leverkusen (Germany) vs. Metalist Kharkiv (Ukraine) Braga (Portugal) vs. Lech Poznan (Poland) Dynamo Kiev (Ukraine) vs. Besiktas (Turkey) Liverpool (England) vs. Sparta Prague (Czech Republic) Manchester City (England) vs. Aris (Greece) PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands) vs. Lille (France) Paris Saint-Germain (France) vs. BATE Borisov (Belarus) Spartak Moscow (Russia) vs. Basel (Switzerland) Sporting Lisbon (Portugal) vs. Glasgow Rangers (Scotland) Stuttgart (Germany) vs. Benfica (Portugal) Twente (Netherlands) vs. Rubin Kazan (Russia) Villarreal (Spain) vs. Napoli (Italy) Zenit St. Petersburg (Russia) vs. Young Boys (Switzerland) Third round First leg Thursday, March 10 Anderlecht-Ajax winner vs. Basel-Spartak Moscow winner Benfica-Stuttgart winner vs. BATE Borisov-Paris-Saint Germain winner Besiktas-Dynamo Kiev winner vs. Aris-Manchester City winner Lille-PSV Eindhoven winner vs. Glasgow Rangers-Sporting Lisbon winner Metalist Kharkiv-Bayer Leverkusen winner vs. Napoli-Villarreal winner PAOK Thessaloniki-CSKA Moscow winner vs. Sevilla-Porto winner Rubin Kazan-Twente winner vs. Young Boys-Zenit St. Petersburg winner Sparta Prague-Liverpool winner vs. Lech Poznan-Braga winner Second Leg Thursday, March 17 Aris-Manchester City winner vs. Besiktas-Dynamo Kiev winner Basel-Spartak Moscow winner vs. Anderlecht-Ajax winner Glasgow Rangers-Sporting Lisbon winner vs. Lille-PSV Eindhoven winner Lech Poznan-Braga winner vs. Sparta Prague-Liverpool winner Napoli-Villarreal winner vs. Metalist Kharkiv-Bayer Leverkusen winner Paris Saint-Germain-BATE Borisov winner vs. Stuttgart-Benfica winner Sevilla-Porto winner vs. PAOK Thessaloniki-CSKA Moscow winner Young Boys-Zenit St. Petersburg winner vs. Rubin Kazan-Twente winner Napoli-Villarreal and Sevilla-Porto are the two matchups which really stand out to me but there are some other intriguing ones in there too. This tournament has recently become one where eastern European clubs have stood out. I wonder if that will continue this season? |

You are correct eastern European teams in the final years of the UEFA Cup and the start of the Europa league have done quite well and there are plenty of candidates from that region this year. But I am looking at Napoli-Villarreal as the match of the round and to me that is as good as anything which we will see in the Champions League. |

Aris and Manchester City drew 0-0 on Tuesday but the remaining first leg games are being played today, and unlike Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, both Rubin Kazan and Metalist Kharkhiv started off slowly, each losing at home, Rubin 0-2 to FC Twente, Metalist, 0-4 to Bayer Leverkusen. Napoli-Villarreal and Sevilla-Porto each look like fascinating two match series to me. |

There is more than just those two games which stand out, Anderlecht-Ajax and Lille-PSV also look like good matchups too. As I write this, Stuttgart, struggling in the Bundesliga, are 1-0 up in the 1st half at Benfica. |

Thursday's first leg scores, FT Rubin Kazan 0 - 2 FC Twente Enschede FT Metalist Kharkiv 0 - 4 Bayer Leverkusen FT Anderlecht 0 - 3 Ajax Amsterdam FT BATE Borisov 2 - 2 Paris S.G. FT Benfica 2 - 1 Stuttgart FT Besiktas 1 - 4 Dynamo Kyiv FT Lech Poznan 1 - 0 Braga FT Napoli 0 - 0 Villarreal FT Basel 2 - 3 Spartak Moscow FT Lille 2 - 2 PSV Eindhoven FT PAOK Saloniki 0 - 1 CSKA Moscow FT Rangers 1 - 1 Sporting Lisbon FT Sevilla 1 - 2 FC Porto FT Sparta Prague 0 - 0 Liverpool FT Young Boys Bern 2 - 1 Zenit St. Petersburg Ajax joined FC Twente and Bayer Leverkusen by winning convincingly away from home. A 3-0 win in Brussels vs Anderlecht, one of the goals by the increasingly impressive Christian Eriksson, the teenaged Danish star. PSG with some late goals to get a draw at BATE Borisov, Benfica came from behind and beat Stuttgart with a long range goal by Franco Jara, Dynamo Kiev with a crushing road win in Turkey versus Besiktas, Villarreal and Napoli played a scoreless tie in Naples, PSV with 2 late goals to draw away to French league leaders Lille, CSKA Moscow won away to PAOK while Freddy Guarin took advantage of a mixup between Sergio Sanchez and Andres Palop to nip in and score the winning goal for Porto away to Sevilla while Sporting Lisbon and Liverpool both obtained road draws at Rangers and Sparta Prague. So most series are still up for grabs but some vital road wins for teams like Twente, Bayer Leverkusen, Ajax, Porto and Dynamo Kiev who have taken control of their series. |

I can not believe I actually wasted two hours of my life watching Liverpool's turgid 0-0 draw with Sparta Prague. At my age each hour becomes all the more precious! From a results only perspective it was not a bad result and gives Liverpool a solid chance of advancing next week at Anfield but it was a poorly played match by both teams. Did Benfica's Jara get credit for his 30 metre shot which bounced down off the cross bar and looked like it crossed the goaline? A teammate came up and pushed the ball into the net to make sure the goal was scored but I do not know who was credited with the goal. Jara deserved it in my view for that wonderful shot and because it did cross the goalline completely. You did not need instant replay to see that. |

Poor John, my wife and I watched a dog show about a year or so ago and the announcer took great pleasure in calling every female dog on display a "Bitch!" It was about the only entertining part of the show to me! ![]() Sevilla apparently wasted many chances against Porto then made a defensive mistake and got punished. The Portuguese team, running away with their league championship are coached by an ex assistant of Jose Mourinho and are well placed to advance. |

Hopefully you were not forced to watch dog shows tonight as Villarreal-Napoli was a tense and exciting game, in my view a betetr match than anything we saw this week in the Champions League. Napoli went up early through Hamsik but just before the end of the half, Villarreal's pressing paid off and Borja Valero passed for first Nilmar then Rossi to score. An exciting 2nd half ended with Villarreal completely out of gas but still holding on to deny napoli from creating any clear cut opportunities. 2-1 final for Villarreal and they advance after last week's draw in Italy. Next up for Villarreal will be Bayer Leverkusen in what should be another fine matchup. |

Good game between Villareal and Napoli, as Don Balon pointed out and last night Sevilla gave Porto headaches before going out on away goals. Late drama as Rangers scored late to tie tonight's game and advance on away goals. |

Dirk Kuyt saved Liverpool some blushes today at Anfield with an 86th minute goal to advance the Reds 1-0 over Sparta Prague. The clubs were 4 minutes from playing 30 extra minutes as Liverpool were as dreadful in this match as they were in the first leg in Prague last week. But they won and after beating Sparta Praha (Prague) they now play Sporting Braga. Edin Dzeko with 2 goals for Man City, I believe his first two for the club as Manchester City easily beat Aris. You have to think City are real contenders for this Cup. Here are the complete pairings for the round of 16 matches, first leg on 10 March, return legs the following week. First named club at home for leg one. Benfica v Paris St Germain Dynamo Kiev v Manchester City Twente Enschede v Zenit St Petersburg CSKA Moscow v Porto PSV Eindhoven v Rangers Bayer Leverkusen v Villarreal Ajax Amsterdam v Spartak Moscow Liverpool v Braga I think Liverpool got the best draw possible for this next round. Bayer Leverkusen v Villarreal, Benfica v Paris St Germain and Dynamo Kiev v Manchester City look to me like very entertaining ties. |

It has not been a good few weeks for Italian clubs in Europe. Napoli went out with their heads held high, losing a close one to Villarreal but they were the only Italian club left in the Europa League. And in the Champions League, all 3 Italian clubs look headed out after losing their first leg matches at home! At this rate Germany will pass Italy by in UEFA's coefficient rating and grab that 4th Champions League spot away from Italy. |

Funny you should say that, Germany to gain fourth Champions League spot from Italy. The change will begin in the 2012-13 season. |

How about that, I did not expect the decision to come down so quickly but the writing has been on the wall for several years now. For what it is worth these are the national representatives from both the Champions League and Europa League who made the final 16 of each competition, column 1 is the Champions League, column 2 is the Europa League, the third is the total. England 4---2---6 Spain 3---1---4 Italy 3---0---3 France 2---1---3 Germany 2---1---3 Ukraine 1---1---2 Denmark 1---0---1 Portugal 0---3---3 Russia 0---3---3 Holland 0---3---3 Scotland 0---1---1 |

Villarreal took a big step towards the quarterfinals with a 3-2 win in Germany over Bayer Leverkusen. Villarreal defended well and were a threat on the counter. Bayer had the ball but lacked a lot of clarity in the final 1/3 while Villarreal were very efficient putting their opportunities away, Rossi with one goal then Nilmar came on for him and scored two more, the game winner in the final minute of the match. Villarreal have been a little shaky in league play recently but their two matches against Napoli and now this first one versus Bayer Leverkusen shows they still have their sharpness in Europe. Braga of Portugal won their home game 1-0 over Liverpool, a good result for the underdogs but hardly a convincing lead to take to Anfield. PSV and Rangers played a 0-0 tie in Holland while Porto, to me one of the favorites to win this competition, won 1-0 in Moscow against CSKA. More matches later tonight. |
