Spurs-Inter and Valencia-Rangers look to me like the pick of Tuesday night's games. On Wednesday Milan-Real Madrid appears to be the best of the bunch. Is it me or is this year's group stage pretty unappealing? |

Tuesday's scores... . . . . . . Group A: Tottenham 3, Inter Milan 1; Werder Bremen 0, FC Twente 2. Group B: Benfica 4, Olympique Lyon 3; Hapoel Tel-Aviv 0, Schalke 0. Group C: Bursaspor 0, Manchester United 3; Valencia 3, Rangers 0. Group D: FC Copenhagen 1, Barcelona 1; Rubin Kazan 0, Panathinaikos 0. A famous night indeed at White Hart Lane, as my Spurs outclassed the defending champions. Van der Vaart opened the scoring after 18 minutes, slipping inside to collect and score after a fine run and layoff by Modric. Inter bounced back and had the home team on the ropes late in the first half, but at the hour mark Bale made a bursting run down the left side and immaculately crossed to Crouch for a half-volley tap-in. Eto'o kept Inter in it with a slick move followed by a bullet inside the far post at the 80-minute mark, but just before full time Bale repeated his splendid run and pass, with Pavlyuchenko converting this time. In other EPL action, Man U waited until the second half before burying the Turks on goals by Fletcher, Obertan, and Bebe; Bursaspor's offense is still oh-for-the group stage. Valencia kept pace in the group, riding two goals by Soldado to a comprehensive win at home. It was a wild night in Lisbon, where Benfica took a four-goal lead (two by Fabio Coentrao, including an audacious chip) and nearly gave it up. Messi gave Barca a lead at the half-hour, but Claudemir equalized a minute later and that was it; Bremen stumbled at home, giving up two late goals after Frings was sent off; and the two scoreless draws merit no discussion here. Okay? |

Great wins for Spurs and Twente. Bale was sensational, he made fools out of Maicon and Lucio, two of the best defenders in the world. I was impressed with Tottenham's overall passing game as they moved the ball around well and kept Inter off balance while defensively they pressured the ball extremely well. As for Twente they took the opportunity to all but eliminate Werder Bremen and have re-entered the race for a top two finish in the group. Spurs and Inter have 7 points while Twente have 5 and Werder 2. Twente's last two games will be away to Inter and home to Sours. they're longshots to make the next round but Tuesday's win at least gives them a chance to dream. Good result for Copenhagen too, that draw with Barcelona all but ensures they will join Barcelona in qualifying for the next round. |

I just wnat to echo the praises for Gareth Bale. I was not too familiar with him before these two game svs Inter but I sure know him now and so does the rest of the world. A very exciting and dynamic winger. An important win for Valencia over Rangers which gives them the inside track for the 2nd qualifying spot behind Manchester United. |

Like Winslow I am quite happy with Spurs victory. Bale was sensational but so was Modric who was the big reason why Spurs passing was so precise. A great confidence booster for Spurs who really took it to the defending European champions. I was surprised that Maicon was not better able to control Bale but the Spurs player had the room to run at him as Inter's flank defense was poor and did not get much help-they also struggled with Lennon on the other flank. Good game in Lisbon as Lyon nearly pulled back from 3-0 down to Benfica but eventually lost 4-3. Fabio Coentrao, remember that name, Portugal's next big player. |

Roberto Soldado was the man for Valencia in their 3-0 win over Rangers. He had been going through a recent scoring slump, as had the whole team but Valencia's midfield won this game and Soldado put away the scoring chances. As somebody mentioned, this was a key win in valencia's attempt to qualify out of this group. Sammy, I am with you on Fabio Coentrao, he's more of an attacker than defender out of the back but he is quite a talent, quick, good passer and somebody who can effectively shoot and cross the ball. Odds are he will not remain long at Benfica. |

Bale is very good going up and down his flank. His next step is to improve his dribbling and learn to cut inside. And we saw two weeks ago he does pack a powerful shot. He also is an immaculate crosser of a ball. 'Arry Rednapp had Tottenham playing well and as others wrote, their passing was excellent in this game. What will be curious is what 'Arry will do once Jermain Defoe returns from injury? I ask because van der Vaart seems ideally suited to playing behind a sole striker. Spurs have, however, shown how to break down Inter's defence. Twente were actually up against the ropes but a combination of Werder's poor finishing and some good saves from Twente's keeper kept the Germans off the board. Then Thorsten Frings was sent off after 75 minutes for bringing down Bryan Ruiz, Twente's dangerman and Twente put their man advanatge to good use, scoring two late goals to win and stick the dagger into Werder. |

And Wednesday's matches... . . . . . . Group E: FC Basel 2, AS Roma 3; Cluj 0, Bayern Munich 4. Group F: Chelsea 4, Spartak Moscow 1; Zilina 0, Olympique Marseille 7. Group G: Auxerre 2, Ajax 1; AC Milan 2, Real Madrid 2. Group H: Partizan Belgrade 0, Sporting Braga 1; Shakhtar Donetsk 2, Arsenal 1. Some big numbers in this half of the draw, but none bigger than the final 16--which Bayern and Chelsea are now part of after their convincing wins. Marseille still has work to do in spite of its shellacking in Slovakia, while Donetsk pulled Arsenal back a bit and Roma picked up a key road win. Langil's late goal gave Auxerre an important home win, and Moises had the only goal in Belgrade. Then there was a match at the San Siro. Higuain scored just before halftime to put Real ahead of a lackluster Rossoneri, but things changed on the hour as supersub Inzaghi replaced Ronaldinho. Several minutes later, a flubbed clearance by Pepe put Ibrahimovic clear on the left; he apparently saw Casillas cheating for a cross and aimed for the far post instead. Spain's #1 had to dive back toward goal and could only parry it up for Pippo to head home. Ten minutes later, the old fella did it again (on a blown offside call), taking a through ball and rolling it under the advancing Casillas, who should've dived instead of jumped. But late in injury time Benzema set up fellow sub Pedro Leon on a nice run into the area; his shot zipped between Abbiati's feet and into the net to seal the draw. |

Madrid's last second goal and draw with Milan combined with Auxerre's win over Ajax means Real Madrid have also joined Chelsea and Bayern Munich in advancing to the 2nd round. Good game in Milan, perhaps not the most artisitic but it had plenty of excitement and good ole Pippo delivered the goods again (although Winslow is right he was offside on the 2nd goal.) Still it was disappointing that Milan gave up that late goal enabling Madrid to draw, especially as Milan's defense I thought did a good job in containing the Spaniard's attack for most of the match. No matter how many step overs he attempted Cristiano Ronaldo could not shake free of Milan's defense. And I think Thiago Silva's return was a big reason Milan played much better defensively than they did two weeks ago or even last weekend in the league. Ibrahimovic did not have a good match however and missed some clear chances to put the game away in the first half. Something about Spanish soccer and Ibra just does not seem to sit well with him! Impressive win by Marseille with Gignac getting a hat trick and another strong win for Chelsea. Mario Gomez seems to have revived his season, after scoring in league play over the weekend, he got 3 in Bayern's win in Romania. Shakhtar's win over Arsenal evens them with the gunners for first place in that group. |

Yogi wrote about players reviving their season, add Karim Benzema to that list, he set up Madrid's final 2 goals in their weekend league win and then on Wednesday provided the pass for Pedro Leon's game tying goal. I think there was some justice in that final result as Inzaghi clearly was a meter offside on his 2nd goal (hmm, Howard Webb was working the game, I wonder if it was the same linesmen he had with him in South Africa?) At least this time Xabi Alonso did not leave the game with cleat marks on his chest although Gennaro Gattuso was trying his best to leave a mark with both Xabi Alonso and Cristiano Ronaldo! Ironic then that Gattuso's yellow eventually came for dissent. ![]() Not the best of games from Madrid and to me it was probably the club's most vulnerable defensive performance since Mourinho arrived but what I am noting about this year's Madrid team, much like their league championship winning teams under Capello and Schuster is they find ways to win or in this case draw, even when the odds are stacked against them. That is a promising sign for the rest of the season. Yogi is correct, Real Madrid, with 10 points have assured themselves a 2nd round spot. A close race for 2nd though with Milan on 5 points, Ajax with 4 and Auxerre with 3. A big win for Shakhtar, Braga still have a chance in the group but it is a remote one, looks like Arsenal and Shakhtar will advance out of their group. How about Roma and Basel, each scoring 3 goals away fron home in beating the other? |

As he entered the field on wednesday Mourinho reminded Milan's fans of the three titles he won last season with Inter by holding 3 fingers aloft! The man is a show unto himself! |

Well done on the giving the group tables. Tonight there are some potentially determinative matches such as Spartak Moscow-Marseille and Roma-Bayern Munich. Tomorrow Inter-Twente and Tottenham-Werder Bremen will determine which two clubs advance from that group. There also are Schalke-Lyon and Rangers-Manchester United which could decide their respective groups too. |
