I hope w/ this loss Milan will have play Gooch in the future. I really hurts me to see him rot in Milan  |

A very disappointing game from Milan. I have to agree with those commenting that Madrid were just too quick and played more intensely than Milan. Missing Thiago Silva in defense hurt but Allegri erred in not playing Kevin Prince Boateng from the start as he had the speed, strength and dynamism to keep up with Madrid. Milan improved when he came on. True both of Madrid's goals were fortunate (what a poor wall on Ronaldo's free kick, and the deflection off of Bonera was just bad luck) but Madrid were clearly the better team. Milan ahs a difficult period ahead with games vs Napoli and I believe Juventus before the return game with Madrid at San Siro. We will learn a lot about this current Milan team in these next two weeks. Ronaldinho was awful today, reports that he is being considered for a Brazil recall must surely be in jest. |

I credit Real Madrid for an energetic display vesus Milan. The rossoneri just did not have an answer for Real Madrid's quick play and pressure defense. But I agree completely with Yogi, Allegri should have used Boateng, one of Milan's liveliest players from the start. The veterans Pirlo, Gattuso and Seedorf were overrun by Madrid's younger midfielders. And the same applied to Ronaldinho. I want to see how Milan rebounds from this loss and as yogi noted the next few weeks will provide ample opportunities to see the resiliency of this Milan team. But let us also not forget that despite madrid's dominance, their two goals were both very fortunate, it is not often a wall parts like the Red Sea as it did on Ronaldo's free kick and the 2nd goal came from a ricochet off of Milan's Bonera. What an embarrasing loss at home for Roma vs Basel. Yes Italian clubs are proving why their UEFA coefficient has dropped and why Germany will soon take that 4th Champions League spot away from Italy. Classy act from Arsenal's fans applauding Eduardo on his return to the club. |

Madrid passed their first major test of the season with flying colors and you can see the "Mourinho-zation" of the team as they play a high pressure game using their speed and energy to overwhelm their opponents Like gaviota one of the most impressive aspects of their play to me has been the improvement in Marcelo's play. Last year Pellegrini did not have confidence in Marcelo's defensive ability so he played him more as an outside midfielder than a fullback. But with Mourinho, Marcelo has blossomed into an excellent two way outside fullback, one who gets forward well but is able to get back and defend effectively. We all knew Ronaldo, Higuain, Ozil, DiMaria would settle in but what has really surprised me has been Marcelo's development. I also agree with our Milan posters that Boateng should have played from the start as he has the athleticism to stay with Madrid's quick players. And Ronaldinho looked absolutely lost at sea in this game. |

Video of Mignot's being sent off before he got onto the pitch. The referee clearly has issues. |

Wow. Your written version of it was interesting, u.a., but the video really leaves one wondering what was going on in that ref's mind. The crowd was deafening, so he had to go clear over to the touch line to even hear what Mignot was saying. Otherwise, since when is waving one's arms around on the sideline an offense or a reason for a ref to visit you? At first I thought perhaps Mignot was infringing too close to the ensuing corner kick location, but that was not the case. This ref has issues all right, and FIFA should look into that sequence of events. Wonder if he had a hair trigger on the other red card as well? Really enjoying everyone's recaps and insights on the games here, as work had not allowed me to watch any of them as yet. Thanks all! |

Wednesday's results: Group A FC Twente Enschede 1 - 1 Werder Bremen Inter Milan 4 - 3 Tottenham H. Group B Lyon 2 - 0 Benfica Schalke 3 - 1 Hapoel Tel Aviv Group C Manchester U. 1 - 0 Bursaspor Rangers 1 - 1 Valencia Group D Barcelona 2 - 0 FC Copenhagen Panathinaikos 0 - 0 Rubin Kazan Sounds like an interesting game between Inter & Tottenham, Javier Zanetti scored early becoming the oldest goalscorer in Champions League history, then Spurs goalie gets sent off, Eto'o converts a penalty and up a man Inter eventually expands their lead to 4-0 before Gareth Bale scores 3 times, including 2 in the final minutes to make it a respectable 4-3 final. Elsewhere Lyon and Schalke each put themselve sin good positions with wins in their group, Maurice Edu scored a goal for each team in Rangers' 1-1 home draw with valencia while Lio Messi scored twice as Barca beat Copenhagen. Newkly troubled Manchester United only won 1-0 at home over Bursaspor as their minds seem elsewhere now. |

Bale was very impressive for Spurs, great runs and strikes against a tiring Inter defense. but I also question Julio Cesar on some of those goals. He just does not seem as sharp these last 6 months a she previously had been. Looks like the 2nd leg will be a good one in London in 2 weeks time. |

A very un Inter like lack of defensive concentration late in the game but also give credit to Bale for some nice play. He does strike the ball well and anybody who can beat Maicon on a play earns my respect. But I do not expect he will see so much time in the next match between the two clubs in London in 2 weeks time. Coutinho is starting to settle in at Inter and although Milito's return to health will mean a return to the bench, I think Coutinho has earned his coach's confidence that he can come in nad handle the job when next called upon. Not bad for an 18 year old. But it is Samuel Eto'o who again is the story for Inter, nobody in the world is playing as well as he right now. |

That unquestionably was some bizarre behavior by the referee but when I have previously seen this ref I have generally been pretty impressed with him. we are all entitled to bad days! Copenhagen may have lost at Barcelona but with Panathinaikos and Rubin Kazan tying, the Danish club is stil pretty well situated to capture 2nd place in that group. Valencia's draw in Scotland emans they will likely need a win in the return game in two weeks if they wish to jump ahead of rangers in their group. By the way I was quite pleased with Real Madrid's play vs Milan. The team do seem to be playing in the mold of Mourinho's past teams, plenty of defensive pressure and attacking the opposition with lots of speed. They should only improve as the season progresses and they become even more accustomed to Mourinho's way of thinking. |

Agreed on Madrid. It is a profoundly depressing development. I'm hoping that Florentino realizes that he needs to shake things up by signing Rooney in the transfer window. |

Today the press are reporting that Rooney is asking for 14 million euros per year! At that price I do not even think Florentino can afford him! Raul scored for Schalke last night as he continues to add to his career best in goals scored in European competitions. With Huntelaar's arrival, the two seem to be clicking now for Schalke, a club whose problems lie elsewhere in their lineup. |

We're makin' measurable progress on the sport in the States boys when three of of the top ten 'plays of the day' on ESPN are UEFA futbol goals, all while we are right in the middle of the pro Baseball Championship Series, Pro basketbball presason start up, and in both the college and pro football seasons!

And they are doing that even though ESPN no longer holds the broadcast rights to the Champions League games. The times they are a changing... It likely helps Raul that he is teaming with Huntelaar, somebody he knows from their time together at Real Madrid and there also are fellow Spanish speakers Jurado and Farfan in Schalke's attack too. It is taking some time but I expect Schalke will soon be getting on track in both the league and Europe. they seem to have the European form going now, time to work on climbing up the Bundesliga table. |
