I thought Manchester United , because of their absences were ripe for an upset and some better finishing by Marseille would have made it even tighter. Note how just before United's 2nd, marseille missed a very good chance to tie. But that is the reality of the sport, missed opportunities will kill you. Hopefully Lyon with Lisandro Lopez, have more of a killer instinct in front of goal than Marseille had last night! ![]() Arjen Robben is a great talent but his constant injuries make him a liability too. |

Entertaining game betweeen Inter and Bayern but Inter just had the better will to win. Looked to me like Bayern players just gave up. It was more than just losing Robben. |

Has their been as good a player in recent times who is as brittle as Arjen Robben? I can not recall one. I know of injury prone players who are not as good as he but no one who is as top a caliber player. Interestingly Robben's problem is not a recurrent problem in the same area, like van Basten's ankle for instance, but he just seems to get injured everywhere! |

It's a good shout. The best I can do from current players is Owen Hargreaves, but he isn't in Robben's class. What's also notable about Robben is that he has come back from all of these various injuries and been effective. It's much easier to think of others who were never the same player after a single major injury, with Van Basten and Ronaldo being two obvious examples. |

And Wednesday's second legs... . . . . . Chelsea 0, FC Copenhagen 0 (2-0 aggregate); Real Madrid 3, Olympique Lyonnais 0 (4-1 aggregate). Pretty predictable, though Real did put on a good show at the Bernabeu. Lyon held out for more than half an hour, thanks to a goalpost and Lloris's play in goal, but Marcelo finally broke through on a nice one-two with C. Ronaldo and an even nicer shift in the box. Lyon pushed men forward after halftime, leading to a series of Real jailbreaks; goals from Benzema (who had one called back earlier for offside, correctly) and Di Maria provided the final cushion. Nice touch at the final whistle, as all the Real players put on T-shirts with a shout-out to Eric Abidal, who's having liver surgery this week. At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea missed probably a dozen good chances, coming closest as Mikel hit the bar on a close-in header. Copenhagen nearly scored in the first half, hitting the post with a free kick, but looked kind of clueless on attack. |

I didn't see much of the Chelsea game, but in what I saw of the second half Drogba and Anelka were linking up together really well. Kind of makes you wonder where Torres stands in all this? |

Hugo Lloris in Lyon's goal really is a top notch goalkeeper. Not only a good shot stopper but he also came off his line well. Lyon played a pretty good first half I thought and had some nice passing combinations which made for an entertaining game but Real Madrid are looking good now and Benzema in particular looks very sharp. Now that they have gotten past their black beast of Lyon, this Real Madrid team could be very difficult to beat. |

This is a good point, Robben gets hurt then comes back just as strong. That is very unique and I too cannot think of a comparable player who has suffered so many different injuries over his caeer but still maintained his level of play. In Madrid he was nicknamed the "glass man" for his fragility! Early in his career Michael Owen seemed to suffer a lot of hamstring injuries but he eventually got over those although I do think they robbed him of his explosiveness. And Owen's subsequent knee injury at a World Cup finally put to rest his speed. I was very happy with Real Madrid's play today. Lyon are not easy opponents and as noted they have a good history vs Madrid but this team is very strong mentally and physically and they wore Lyon down. Lloris did keep Lyon in the match but Madrid's relentlessness eventually paid off. Superb work by Marcelo on the opening goal. I agree with Don Balon, this club is looking very good now and I do not think many clubs will want to draw them when the quarterfinal and beyond pairings are announced on Friday. |

I thought Madrid sort of wore Lyon down too. The French club did not look bad but Madrid were simply better. And it is clear Mourinho has made the team stronger both mentally and physically. |

The first half of Madrid vs Lyon had a good pace to it and was competitive. But Madrid, as they often do under Mourinho, amde soem halftime adjustments and took the game over. I have to agree with the other comments here that Real Madrid look to be playing well now. Based on current form I think I would pick them to beat Barcelona if they played right now. |

UEFA did give 1 match bans to both Arsene Wenger and Samir Nasri for their verbal confrontation with the referee following Arsenal's elimination last week against Barcelona. And UEFA heard the claims made here that Spurs assistant Joe Jordan should also be suspended for his confrontation with Gennaro Gattuso last month. Jordan will also be suspended one match and thus will miss Tottenham's first leg of the quarterfinal. What is surprising to me is that Jordan's suspension was announced several weeks after Gattuso's. Tomorrow is the draw for the quarterfinals and these are the teams remaining: Barcelona Shakhtar Donetsk Tottenham Schalke Manchester United Inter Milan Chelsea Real Madrid Should set up some wonderful matchups. |

I suppose Schalke and Shakhtar Donetsk are the two clubs most teams would hope to be drawn against in the quarters, Barcelona and Madrid the two they would least like to be paired against. But both Schalke and Shakhtar are here on merit and should not be underestimated, especially Shakhtar who looked good in finishing ahead of Arsenal in group play then in eliminating Roma. I agree with Don Balon about the strangeness in delaying Jordan's supension, if he was to have been suspended it should have been for the second leg of the round of 16. |

Real Madrid and Barcelona play one another in the league at the Bernabeu on 16 April, the two also face each other in the Copa del Rey Final on 20 April in Valencia. If later today they are drawn together in the Champions League quarterfinals, whose first legs will be 5-6 April and second legs will be 12-13 April then the two clubs would play four times in a span of two weeks! Even if they are kept apart in the quarterifnals but if paired together if they advance to the semifinals, those are scheduled for 26-27 April and 3-4 May, so again they would meet four times in less than 3 weeks. Some potential for some exciting times ahead in the next few months. |

Well, here's the quarterfinal draw...it's a blaugrana bonanza, but both Spanish giants should be pleased: Barcelona-Shakhtar Donetsk Chelsea-Manchester United Inter Milan-Schalke Tottenham-Real Madrid Lots of interesting matches there. And if Barca and Real go through, they'll play each other in the semifinals. |

So Chygrynsky gets a chance to show Barcelona they made a mistake in letting him go too soon. If Shakhtar plays without fear I think they can give Barcelona a good match especially with barcelona going through a dip in form recently. Madrid will be favored against Tottenham but with Modric and van der Vaart, another player with a chance for revenge on his old club, in midfield and the speed of Bale and Lennon on the wings they will present an interesting challenge. Chelsea-Manchester United is a game with a lot of league feeling to it, should be a typically intense match between them. You wonder with all of these injuries United are going through about what kind of team they will field? Schalke will have a new coach Ralf Ragnick to play Inter, the champions of course are favored but I remember Schalke upsetting a favored Inter in the old UEFA Cup about 15 years ago. |
