Just a quick comment on the Jordan-Gattuso incident. raconteur is more spot on point here imo. I have never felt that a player should be able to say anything or do anything short of physical contact (like getting in another player's face without actually touching him) that he wants in order to incite another into over-reacting. Some words and actions are impossible to overlook or to fail to react to. It is a judgement call, and very difficult to make in the run of play, but if they are going to review such an incident on film and issue sanctions, then the instigator should also be held accountable to some degree. |

As FIFA did when they suspended both Zidane and his instigator Materazzi following their celebrated 2006 incident. |

Exactly. I thought of that case while writing, then failed to mention it. That case demonstrates the point. Occasionally it will be difficult to really tell on replay, but I thought Jordan should be deserving of some part of the punishment in this case. |

I felt Don Carlo gave Drogba a breather. He did play 120 minutes over the weekend. Both Anelka & Torres were fresher. I see it as a good rotation. BTW, Nico has 7 goals in 6 CL matches. Dude certainly knows when to turn it on. One last thing, The Special One came on Sky Sports & confessed his love for CFC. WOW I will goto London & throw rose petals at him to welcome him back to Da Bridge.

Wednesday's results... . . . . . . Inter Milan 0, Bayern Munich 1; Olympique Marseille 0, Manchester United 0. And the only goal of the night came on a fock-up by Julio Cesar, who spilled a long shot from Robben right in front of Gomez for a 90th minute tap-in. Apparently the young keeper Kraft played a heck of a match for Bayern. This is the third straight time Bayern has won at the San Siro, and it shows that Inter didn't get all the bugs out when it fired Rafa Benitez. It wasn't exactly a snoozefest at the Velodrome, but it was a disappointing match in many ways with not very many good opportunities. OM dominated long stretches of the second half, but United perked up after Scholes came in for the last 15 minutes. |

I thought Kraft looked quite good in goal, van Gaal's gamble to give the young keeper the starting job at the start of 2011 has paid off. Say what you will about Louis but he does give young players a chance and in the past two years at Bayern, Muller, Badstuber, Contento and now Kraft are all young players who van Gaal has given an opportunity and all but Contento are now regular starters with muller and badstuber jumping from reserves at Bayern to starters on germany's World Cup semifinal team within 10 months! I do not know what the final statistics showed but from what I saw Marseille had more of the ball than Manchester United but did not really create much danger. 0-0 is not an ideal score but i have to think manchester united are content with today's result. |

Inter had their chances but were stopped by a combo of Kraft and some poor finishing. Julio Cesar did not have all that much to do until he could not hold that late shot by Robben and Gomez knocked in the rebound. Van Gaal made a good adjustment I thought when he put the quicker Breno on for Badstuber after Eto'o was giving Badstuber a tough time. Inter are not out of it but they will need to play much better than today to have any chance against Bayern who do look like a different team with Robben and Ribbery attacking down either wing. |

I thought Inter-Bayern was a pretty even match which could have gone either way, but Gomez pounced on Julio Cesar's mistake and that was the difference. If Inter attack Bayern in Germany they still can pull it out as Eto'o did trouble their defense. Marseille has a good midfield and they passed the ball well but ran out of ideas near goal and also ahd to face a very solid Manchester United defense. The Red Devils do know how to defend. Will somebody buy Paul Scholes some desenex?

I thought Bayern were playing better than Inter until the last 15-20 minutes when Inter started forcing the play but when they could not convert, Gomez opportunistically pounced and won the game. Looked to me like Manchester United were perfectly content with a 0-0 tie in Marseille. |

Victor Valdes is back for Barcelona but Carles Puyol will miss the match while Arsenal have included both Fabregas and van Persie in their traveling squad so there is a chance they could play tomorrow. |

I think Arsenal need to play this 2nd leg just as they did in the 2nd half of the first leg, press Barcelona in midfield and look to hit them on the counter. Obviously missing Walcott and with the health of Fabregas, Wilshere and van Persie uncertain hurts Arsenal's ability to carry out their game plan effectively. But Arshavin and Nasri should both be ready to go and their speed and skill will be something Barcelona will need to be careful of. Should be a fascinating game today. As to Roma's trip to Ukraine, well they need to win by two goals in order to classify. That will not be an easy task but Roma are showing signs of improvement since Montella took over as coach. Shakhtar, however, were very impressive in winning in Rome three weeks ago. As long as they do not play too cautiously at home, they should do well. |

Second leg results... . . . . . Barcelona 3, Arsenal 1 (4-3 aggregate); Shakhtar Donetsk 3, AS Roma 0 (6-2 aggregate). Hard to believe that Barca scraped through by a single goal. The Gunners looked jittery throughout at the Camp Nou, and fell behind in first-half injury time (5 minutes!) when Messi, who had just hit a very scorable opportunity straight at Almunia, took a short pass behind the Arsenal D and flicked the ball over the onrushing keeper before driving it home. Barca gave up the lead shortly after halftime as Sergio Busquets headed into his own net, but a couple of minutes later van Persie wound up and shot (wide) after the whistle went for offside; that drew his second yellow. It took about 15 minutes for Xavi to put the home team ahead again on a nice one-two in the box, then Messi converted a penalty to decide the tie. In Ukraine, Shakhtar had no problem extending its first-leg lead, as Hubschmann opened the scoring after 18 minutes. Roma lost Mexes to a second yellow just before halftime, and Willian and Eduardo added goals in the second half to put the Ukrainians in the quarterfinals for the first time ever. |

Arsenal of course are livid at van Persie's expulsion for receiving a 2nd yellow for kicking the ball after the whistle blew. If I were the ref I would have given him a break, sending a guy off with a 2nd yellow in a game of this consequences is pretty harsh in my eyes. But that is not why Arsenal lost, they lost because they did not come to play, they simply defended. They did that well for most of the game but you always knew Barcelona would find some openings especially with passers of the quality of Iniesta, Xavi and Messi on the team. Total shots on goal for Arsenal: zero! That says it all, they scored on an own goal by Busquets, other than that and one attack late in the match which Mascherano I believe broke up, Arsenal had nothing going forward. They will use van Persie's ending off as an excuse for why they lost but they should really look in the mirror, as an evenly slightly more ambitious attitude could have paid off for them. Barcelona were not overwhelming in this game and as ursus notes missing Pique and Puyol, they were just not what they typically are. But they were the better of the two teams over both legs and go through. Mexes red carded? There is a surprise, he is the French reincarnation of Paolo Montero! Nice to see Shakhtar make it to the quarterfinals and they do not seem like they will be pushovers either. |

Pepe's thoughts are similar to my own, van Persie should not have been sent off for shooting after the offside whistle had gone. But Arsenal showed no ambition in this game, they made Mourinho's Inter look offensive minded last year in the semifinal second leg by comparison! Almunia had to come in for the injured first chocie keeper but I thought he kept Arsenal in the game. Barca's shooting was not the greatest today but the through balls on two of their three goals were absolutely superb as was Messi's liftin the ball over the onrushing goalie then shooting to score the first goal. As Pepe says, the sending off provides a convenient excuse to mask Arsenal's ultra conservative play. Well done to Shakhtar in advancing and they thoroughly deserved to go through. Roma's ugly side came out in this game especially involving Mexes and DeRossi, the latter who should have joined the former in being sent to the showers early. Not many clubs will look forward to a trip to Donetsk in the enxt round and with their skillful pasisng and orderly defense, Shakhtar could pull off another surprise depending on their draw. |
