Well expect Gattuso get a slap on the wrist <_< Remember Drogba got a 4 match suspension for profanity. This guy was a lose cannon, trying to commit bodily harm. |

It's pretty much moot anyway. He's unlikely to ever play in the Champions League again. |

You do not think Gattuso will be back at Milan next season? I agree with those posters who commented that Barcelona became too casual in the 2nd half versus Arsenal. I had a feeling they would have some trouble when they withdrew Villa and put in Keita. The move was designed to strengthen the midfield but what it did was take away Barcelona's most effective attacker and enabled Arsenal to worry less about Barcelona's own attack thereby giving them the opportunity to put more people forward and put Barcelona under pressure. It was that pressure which eventually paid off with the two goals. Of course Barcelona are still in a good position to win the two match series but they gave Arsenal not only the chance to win but they gave them a big morale boost and that will pay off when Arsenal visit Barcelona in 3 weeks time. |

It was only the first half of the two leg series but I was pleased with Arsenal's fight back last Wednesday. They stayed true to their philosophy and looked to attack Barcelona. While Barca had more of the ball, Arsenal were dangerous when they went forward and that attitude is what served them well. Plus Messi, Iniesta and really Xavi all had below par games thanks to the pressure Arsenal put on them as they did not have much time on the ball. That type of pressure will need to be repeated at the Nou Camp but Arsenal, while not favoured, can still pull out an aggregate win away from home with their ability to counter and having a finisher like van Persie. |

Gattuso, who is suspended for leg 2 vs Tottenham for yellow card accumulation has been handed an additional 4 game suspension. So unless Milan make a miraculous comeback and advance to this year's final, Gattuso's Champions League is over for this year. Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf and Nesta are all out of contract at the end of this season so I am guessing that was behind ursus' statement that this could be the end of hs Champions Leaague career. Milan will have some big decisions to make this offseason with those out of contract players. I suspect Nesta will be back, Seedorf will be gone and they are on the fence with Pirlo and Gattuso, although there could be room for them both next season. |

Any suspension for Joe Jordan? We can all agree that what Gattuso did was wrong but Jordan was up near the touchline obviously looking to wind Gattuso up. An assistant coach, no any coach, has no business looking to mix it up with an opposing player. Last week Shakhtar Donetsk while still on their winter break won at Roma, this week it is FC Copenhagen's turn as they host Chelsea. While Chelsea are clear favourites, with the way they have been playing recently, maybe Copenhagen have a chance to repeat Shakhtar's accomplishment? |

Last week we looked at whether the form of the teams playing then had increased or decreased since last fall so lets do the same for this week's games. This by the way is the schedule: Tuesday Lyon-Real Madrid Copenhagen-Chelsea Wednesday Marseille-Manchester United Inter-Bayern Munich In my opinion Madrid, Lyon. Marseille, Inter and Bayern are playing better now than they were last fall, Manchester United are rougjly the same, Chelsea are worst and Copenhagen are the unknown as they are still in preseason. Whether this effects their play this week remains to be seen but is worth bringing up. Jordan was the incitor not the aggressor, I could see him receiving a short ban as a result of those incidents with Gattuso but he does not deserve a penalty equal to Gattuso's. |

Joe Jordan should be suspended for using his throat to block Gattuso's hand? I do not see how you could argue for a suspension for him. He may have wound Gattuso up, Ok not may, he DID wind Gattuso up but he never made any phsyical contact with the Milan player. Instead he received contact from Gattuso. He was the victim in the incident and rightfully should not be sanctioned. |

A pretty good result for Madrid in my view. Lyon outplayed Madrid in the first half as Mourinho in my view had Madrid playing too conservatively and sitting back too much. But as he often does he made adjustments at the half and advanced Madrid's lines as they pushed forward more and took over the control of the game in the 2nd half. As Edwin noted, Benzema came in off the bench and immediately scored giving Madrid that vital away goal. After falling behind Lyon went on the offensive more and eventually got their goal in the final 10 minutes. A fair result which reflected the play on the field. Madrid have the opportunity at home to end their maldition against Lyon and with tonight's result they are well placed to do so. Chelsea went to Denmark and got two goals from Nicolas Anelka to beat Copenhagen 2-0. A result which should make the return game just a formality. |

I will step in and give the full results from Tuesday: Lyon 1-1 Real Madrid Copenhagen 0-2 Chelsea Ancelotti dropped Drogba and played Torres and Anelka at forward. As gaviota noted it was Anelka, with a goal in each half, who provided the difference as Chelsea comfortably won over an opponent who showed the rust from not having played a competitive match in several months. With Chelsea's poor recent form this was probably the ebst opponent the Blues could have received and their two goal road win practically doe sput them in to the quarterfinals. At Milan, Ancelotti was an expert at taking teams with indifferent legaue form and making them European contenders. Now he will be charged to do the same with Chelsea. |

Jordan should be suspended for inciting Gattuso. He was up by the touchline and talking to an opposing player. No question Gattuso overreacted but Jordan should not have been on the sideline talking to an opposing player. He clearly was trying to incite Gattuso and he did that. A fine and/or a one match ban would have been appropriate in my opinion for Jordan. As for Gattuso, a 4 game ban is appropriate. What has happened with Fernando Torres? He looks absolutely awful now. No confidence whatsoever and a touch of cement to boot. Anelka rescued Chelsea and of the clubs three forwards, it is Anelka who is by far playing the best. Mourinho and Madrid got what they wanted out of their trip to Lyon, an away goal and a tie. They are well positioned to advance when they play Lyon in Madrid. Welcome to the forum Rufus T. Firefly. |

That is how I view the incident too, Jordan should not have been suspended and UEFA correctly did not suspend him. Gattuso was the aggressor. While Jordan was trying to wind Gattuso up for all we know he was legitimately in the coaching area shouting instructions to his team when he and Gattuso got into their verbal battle which Gattuso turned into a physical one.
What is wrong with Torres? The Germans said it best when they created the word, Schadenfreude! I think raconteur has said it best, Torres has no confidence now. Surprising considering his experience. But it accurately describes how he is playing. And Drogba? Ever since he contracted malaria he has not been the same player. He says he is recovered but his form certainly has not. |

Wednesday is the rerun of last season's final between Inter and Bayern Munich. A fascinating game, bayern have been playing pretty well over the past month, all the better since Ribery and Robben are both, for now, healthy. And Mario Gomez is finally showing his Stuttgart goalscoring form with Bayern. On Inter's side both Lucio and Sneijder should return after missing Inter's weekend league game but Diego Milito looks like he will miss the game. A chance for Bayern to get some redemption while Inter will have the opportunity to show that they are now back after their collapse under Rafa Benitez. Hopefully it will be an interesting match although I suspect leg 1 will be rather cagey. |

The final result of 1-1 was not bad for Real Madrid but other than Benzema's goal the team did not create very many scoring chances. And even Benzema's goal was helped by Lloris going down too early then allowing the shot to go through his legs as he was getting back to his feet. As gaviota wrote, Madrid did begin the 2nd half much better than the first when Lyon controlled the game but also were unable to create many opportunities. But after Benzema's goal, Mourinho decided to close up shop and Madrid once more retreated into a defensive shell which invited Lyon forward until they eventually scored. Maybe that is the expected move but I think it allowed Lyon back into the game and now they still have a decent chance in the return game in Madrid especially with their ability to counter attack. Michel Bastos will miss the return with a suspension but Lyon's most dangerous forward Lisandro Lopez should be back in time for that match. Madrid will be favorites to go through after this draw but Lyon are still very much alive. |
