I have a story from one of my many pub teams I played on. We were on a terrible run of form, haven't won a match in like our last 10 or so. We had this Mad Colombian guy on our team that used to wear Baseball cleats (plastic bottoms though) who made a bike kick in like the 30th minute of our match. Man, we were so freaking excited, cause we could smell a victory. I mean, how many times have you played in a match w/ a bike kick goal??? Anyway, our team was on a high, but that high wore off around the 60th minute. We struggled after that. I mean, we were fouling to stop runs. Just kicking the ball down the field. The other team got opportunities, but I stopped a pk & preserved a 1-0 victory. I will never forget it, cause we were so freakin' happy. A bike kick goal & a penalty stop in the same match to preserve a victory. That doesn't happen everyday. Then add the fact that it was a situation we weren't use in having. A victory!!! Sorry, I know it's not a professional match, but I had to share the memories

That was a beautiful goal by Heynckes and what made it even more difficult was he was in movement as the ball came to him. I recall another bicycle kick goal by a German national team player, Klaus Fischer's goal in that epic 1982 World Cup semifinal vs France. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFIw7va2yNM If I recall correctly it was Fischer's bicycle kick in overtime which turned that match around, as France were 2 goals in front in extra time before Germany eventually tied it and won on penalty kicks. That remains to this day the most exciting match I think I have ever seen, even if I was disappointed that France lost. Good story robdog, well that bicycle kick ranks in your personal top 10 of all time! Another memorable bicycle kick I have in my mind is one which actually did not go in, Marcelo Balboa's near miss against Colombia in the 1994 World Cup, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_-cywwS8E8 I was in the stadium for this game, seated about 12 rows up from where Tab Ramos (#9) took the corner kick, from my viewing angle, especially with the way the ball bounced back off the advertising boards and hit the backside of the net, I thought the shot had gone in and was starting to celebrate with my friends seated around me when we all noticed the US players were not celebrating! But Balboa's "near miss" still remains the most memorable bicycle kick to me. |
