I am not a real big fan of the Winter Olympics but I do enjoy watching speed skating and in the Netherlands where the sport is very closely followed, I would say it is along with cycling the joint #2 sport in the country behind football, there was a lot of joy with Sven Kremer's win in the 5000m. His best event is really the 10K, so that he won at the shorter distance already is a good sign he can double. The Dutch fans in their bright orange outfits, cowbells and horns give an almost football atmosphere to international speed skating events.

This is a pretty funny video about a NBC reporter who just witnessed Sven Kremer win the gold emdal at 5000m ask him to identify himself before her interview. Kramer's response? "Are you stupid?" I don't think he was being arrogant, as he points out in his later interview with a Dutch reporter, this NBC reporter just witnessed him winning the medal!

Haha that is great, and I am glad Kremer answered her that way instead of just shaking his head and acting like the chimp she wanted him to be. She says, "it is for identification purposes!" What is he a corpse? Why couldn't she just begin her report with "I am here with Holland's Sven Kremer, the winner of the gold medal at 5000 meters?" Then she could continue with her questions.

One of the biggest blunders of this or any Olympics as Sven Kremer on his way to a comfortable win in the 10,000 meters speedskating was disqualified for an improper lane change. It was Kremer's coach Gerard Kemkers who instructed him to move to the inside lane about 2/3 of the way through the race when he should have gone to the outside. A horrible mistake by Kemkers but Kremer I think should have known where he was supposed to go without the coach's input so I do not the coach is 100% at fault. Not only does Kremer lose his 2nd gold of these games but he is on bonus contract with many of his sonsors and missing out on the gold medal will likely cost him more than 300,000 euros in lost income!

Canada's motto of "Own the podium" rang true as Canada won 14 gold medals in Vancouver, more than any other nation. A great accomplishment when you think about it even if the addition of all of these "X Game" type of winter sports allows some nations to pad their medal winning statistics. I also never really thought of South Korea as a winter sports powerhouse but they had an impressive medal total as well. One nation which did not was Russia, and the Russian president is already calling for the head of Russia's Olympic Comittee!
