Germany, Italy and France are adapting the strategy of lulling their World Cup opponents into a false sense of security! All 3 really looked poor yesterday and have a lot of work to do before the World Cup.Holland were controlling the US until they fell asleep late, after making many lineup changes, but I was wondering, as I often do when watching them, whether they can take advanatge of their ball possession and convert that into goals? Nice buildup work but with Van Nistelrooy out of the picture, they really need a goalscorer to take full advantage of their build up play. And as the US goal showed, the Dutch goalkeeping could be a question mark as well. |

Sevilla's Ivica Dragutinovic tore his achilles tendon and will be out 6 months so there is another player who will miss the World Cup through injury. Dragutinovic is the type of defender any coach would wnat because he can play anywhere on the backline. But Serbia still have a good defence with Vidic, Subotic and Ivanovic. |

The injuries mount as Denmark's goalie Thomas Sorensen had to leave Stoke's match with Chelsea with a suspected broken elbow. If confirmed that would rule him out of the World Cup. It is always sad to read of players who come this close only to go down injured this close to the World Cup. |

Italy are having a brief training camp this week, for which Lippi has called up 29 players, as follows: Goalkeepers: Buffon, De Sanctis, Marchetti, Sirigu. Defense: Bocchetti, Bonucci, Cannavaro, Cassani, Chiellini, Criscito, Grosso, Legrottaglie, Zambrotta. Midfield: Camoranesi, Candreva, Cossu, Gattuso, Maggio, Marchisio, Montolivo, Palombo, Pepe, Pirlo. Strikers: Borriello, Di Natale, Gilardino, Iaquinta, Pazzini, Quagliarella. It is widely thought that the list of 30 will include these 29, and that barring injury this means the official end of the World Cup hopes of a variety of players who have been mentioned frequently on here with differing degrees of enthusiasm, including: Amauri, Balotelli, Cassano, Giovinco and Miccoli (notwithstanding the fact that Cassano and Miccoli have been instrumental in getting their clubs to the verge of Champions League qualification, well ahead of Lippi's Juventus). Toni is also missing, but is thought not to be completely out of the picture after his successful loan stint with Roma. I continue to think that this team is at least two years too old to do anything of note in South Africa. |

I just posted this in the Azzurri discussion thread. Because of the Coppa Italia Final no Inter or Roma players were selected. Yeah right as if any Inter players would have made it! DeRossi certainly will be in South Africa from Roma and I suppose Cassetti, Perotta and Toni remain possibilities too. As for the rest of the squad, I am disappointed that Miccoli and Cassano aren't being considered but no surprise they were not included. Too many 2006 veterans on this team for my liking. Like ursus, I think there are too many players who are past their peak. |

Some news out of Germany, neither of which is good for their World Cup hopes, first Joachim Low has confirmed that Kevin Kuranyi will not be on the World Cup team, so Germany's most in form striker will not be going to South Africa. And neither will be Germany's expected starting goalkeeper, Leverkusen's Rene Adler who needs surgery on a rib injury and will miss the finals. Looks likely then that Schalke's Manuel Neuer will be in goal. I don't think Germany will miss much with Neuer coming in for Adler but Kuranyi is Germany's best scorer now and Low's stubbornness in not inclusing him does hurt the national team. |

Low also confirmed that Leverkusen midfielder Simon Rolfes, who has been out for most of the season with an injury, will not be making the trip to South Africa. kicker and other German outlets are saying that Low is still undecided in terms of his starting keeper between Neuer and Tim Weise (of Bremen). Wiese is the more spectacular (in both a good and bad way), and my guess is that Neuer will get the nod on the basis of consistency. |

I wonder if Rolfes' injury gives Thorsten Frings a chance to make it back into the national team? Like Kuranyi, Frings had been out of consideration for Low. I am not sure why Frings is in Low's doghouse but accoridng to this article: http://sports.yahoo.com/soccer/news?slug=ap-germany-kuranyi This is why Kuranyi has been excluded, Kuranyi left the stadium at halftime of Germany’s World Cup qualifier when he was not picked for the game-day roster and sent friends to collect his bags from the team hotel. He later apologized and often expressed hope that he would be allowed to return. Mr. Pither is Kuranyi really Germany's most in form striker? I think Stefan Kiessling may differ with you. Talking about goalkeepers I always wondered why Dortmund's Roman Wiedenfuller never got a look from the national team? |

Rolfes has been out since the fall and Low hasn't looked to Frings during that time, so I would be surprised if he did so now. Kuranyi's temper tantrum was a big deal in Germany at the time; I can understand why Low feels the way he does. Weidenfeller is now one of the favorites for the third keeper position, along with Butt of Bayern. Some people are suggesting Jens Lehmann, but I have a hard time seeing that happen. |

So it will be Weise or Neuer then in goal for Germany. Not bad goalies but hardly the 2nd coming of Sepp Maier, Toni Schumacher or Oliver Kahn! |

I always thought Weidenfeller should have had a chance too but this morning I read that reports in Germany are that Bayern's Hans Jorg Butt will be Adler's replacement. As Merengue correctly states, none of the three keepers will make German fans forget some of their past greats. |

Bayern's Hans Jorg Butt got the call as Germany's 3rd goalie. Here in fact is Jogi Low's 27 player provisional roster for the World Cup, as expected no Kuranyi or Frings: Goalkeepers: Hans Jorg Butt (Bayern Munich), Manuel Neuer (Schalke), Tim Wiese (Werder Bremen) Defenders: Dennis Aogo (Hamburg), Holger Badstuber (Bayern Munich), Andreas Beck (Hoffenheim), Jerome Boateng (Hamburg), Arne Friedrich (Hertha Berlin), Marcell Jansen (Hamburg), Philipp Lahm (Bayern Munich), Per Mertesacker (Werder Bremen), Serdar Tasci (Stuttgart), Heiko Westermann (Schalke) Midfielders: Michael Ballack (Chelsea, England), Sami Khedira (Stuttgart), Toni Kroos (Bayer Leverkusen), Marko Marin (Werder Bremen), Mesut Oezil (Werder Bremen), Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich), Christian Traesch (Stuttgart), Piotr Trochowski (Hamburg) Forwards: Cacau (Stuttgart), Mario Gomez (Bayern Munich), Stefan Kiessling (Bayer Leverkusen), Miroslav Klose (Bayern Munich), Thomas Mueller (Bayern Munich), Lukas Podolski (Cologne) Hamburg's Dennis Aogo and Bayern's Holger Badstuber were a pair of surprising choices in defence but my guess is if Marcell Jansen is fully recovered then neither Aogo or Badstuber will make the final 23 and will end up as alternates. 2 more players will have to be cut too, I would think maybe 1 forward and 1 midfielder. Will Low give a chance to youngsters like Kroos, Marin or Muller or will they be the leading candidates to become alternates? |

Michael Ballack is out of the World Cup with an ankle ligament injury. http://sports.yahoo.com/soccer/news?slug=ap-germany-ballack I will ask those more familiar with Germany's team about who are his likely replacements from the list of players Joachim Low has selected? |

I go into some of the hisory between Ballack and Boateng in the World Cup Group D discussion. As for a replacement for Ballack, the most natural one on Germany's roster would be Sami Khedira who is a somewhat simialr style player to Ballack. I wonder, however, if Low is thinking now that it was a mistake to exclude Thorsten Frings? |

Ballack may not be the all around player he was a few years ago but he is still a very valuable player and the leader of the German team. Losing him to injury is a major loss, equivalent to England losing Gerrard, Spain Xavi or Italy Pirlo. Sami Khedira, if he does fill Ballack's place in the lineup will have some big shoes to fill. |
