So now that the 'noughties' (no-one ever did come up with a better name did they?) are drawing to a close, we can take a look back at the decade in football and I thought we could use that brilliant tool of this past decade, youtube, to enjoy some of the best goals again! I wouldn't envisage this as being about choosing THE goal of the decade or ranking goals in order, more about having the chance to sit back over the Christmas / new year period and enjoy a bunch of great goals! Hopefully as we're a fairly diverse bunch on here there could be goals from a variety of different leagues/competitions that others haven't seen yet. So maybe no 'goal of the decade', though if there was one then I reckon a lot of opinion would converge on this effort - for sheer quality of strike combined with importance of occasion. Go on, you know which goal it is before you even click the link don't you? ![]() I maybe have more of a personal preference for great team goals, and this was one of the best of the decade, finished off by Cambiasso for Argentina against Serbia at the 06 World Cup. In a similar vein was this one completed by Scholesy against Panathinaikos in the CL some years back. In fact thinking through the best United goals of the decade, it could almost turn into the Paul Scholes show. He's maybe the player I've most enjoyed watching these ten years, his skill and vision, the accuracy of his passing and of course his perfect technique in striking the ball as seen against Aston Villa in 2007, against Barcelona in the CL semis, his famous volley from a corner in a title decider at Bradford, to choose just three. Hell of a volley here from Robin van Persie, the way he controls this volley is superb. Another great one from Wayne Rooney in 2005 against Newcastle. Got to find room for Messi's solo effort against Getafe, and I always loved the improvisation from Ronaldinho against Villarreal. Any more? |

Great idea Simon and something to discuss during the holiday break. That Zidane goal against Bayer Leverkusen hurt for me to see but it was incredible and as Simon writes bssed on the stage and what it meant, it probably would be my choice for goal of the year. I can only think of Van Basten's goal at the Euro 88 final for another goal of that quality in a major final. Here are a couple of my recent favorites: Michael Essien vs Barcelona Nilmar's goal against Corinthians Emmanuel Adebayor's Bicycle Kick Goal vs Villarreal Of the other goals Simon provided, Messi's goal following his Maradona-esque run is what really helped bring him to fame. I had never seen Van Persie's flying volley before and really appreciated that. The technique and timing required for that is amazing. I hope he comes back from his injury soon. |

Excellent idea Simon and I liked your pick of Zidane's goal in the 2002 Champions League Final as the goal of the decade. No question that was one of my favorite goals of the decade (are they really calling this decade the 'noughties?') but here is another one which I really enjoyed, but which Simon I am sure will be much less happy to see: Redondo's Backheeled Self Pass To Set Up Raul |

This is a compilation of what FIFA have considered the top 10 goals of 2009 and which are the candidates for the "Puskas award" as the best goal of the year, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LlZeSxHM1M A few of the goals already mentioned by other posters are included here such as Adebayor's and Nilmar's goals. Here is the complete list of goals on this video compilation: Emmanuel Adebayor (Villarreal-Arsenal 1-1, Champions League, 7 aprile 2009) Eliran Atar (Bnei Yehoda-Maccabi Netanya, Ligat Ha-Al, 7 febbraio 2009) Michael Essien (Chelsea-Barcelona 1-1, Champions League, 6 maggio 2009) Luis Angel Landin (Morelia-Cruz Azul 1-1, Clausura messicana, 12 aprile 2009) Andres Iniesta (Chelsea-Barcellona 1-1, Champions League, 6 maggio 2009) Grafite (Wolfsburg-Bayern Monaco 5-1, Bundesliga, 4 aprile 2009) Cristiano Ronaldo (Porto-Manchester United 0-1, Champions League, 15 aprile 2009) Fernando Torres (Liverpool-Blackburn 4-0, Premier League, 11 aprile 2009) Katlego Mphela (Spagna-Sudafrica 3-2, Confederations Cup, 28 giugno 2009) Nilmar (Corinthians-Internacional 0-1, campionato brasiliano, 10 maggio 2009) All are excellent but my personal favorites are Grafite's and Nilmar's goals. Maybe because I have always enjoyed seeing good dribblers. |

I agree with you Pither, those Grafite and Nilmar goals were superb and were not just a great shot but required wonderful skill to dribble through their opposition. Here is another goal I always liked and is of a similar style to the Grafite and Nilmar goals, Zlatko IBrahimovic Goal for Ajax vs NAC Breda I can not recall exactly when this goal was scored by Ibrahimovic but it was in the early part of the decade before Ibrahimovic moved to Juventus. |

Two of my favorites are Michael Essien goal vs Arsenal on December 10, 2006. Arsenal was poised to win a match in Stamford Bridge, but Essien canceled out the lead for Le Gooners in the 84th minute. It was a bomb from about 35 yards out. It preserved Chelsea's unbeaten league record under Jose Mourinho Good Times!!! ![]() My second was Beasley's Goal vs. Turkey in a losing effort in the 2003 FIFA's Confederation's Cup. I remember the build-up perfectly. First, a shot on goal & Howard grabs the rock. He looks down field & spots LD streaking on the left side. Howard gets the ball to LD, who takes on his defender & sends a cross into the box. There was DMB to meet the ball & sent a header perfectly into the net. At that moment in time, USNMT fans knew that we were heading for good things, but it was only a tease as you can see the history of the USNMT ![]() Honorable mention, Gonzalo Rubén Bergessio's 2nd goal vs River Plate in the 2008 Copa Libertadores. Gallinas were poised to advance to the Quarterfinals over 9 man Los Cuevos, but two goals from Bergessio in the 69th & 72nd minute stopped the party @ El Monumental. I didn't watch, because I was so upset after San Lorenzo going down to 9 men. I thought the Libertadores was over for El Ciclón From then on, I will only watch matches of my favorite teams to the final whistle. I believe I discovered the true result on this site
