At the award announcing Lionel Messi as the FIFA World Player of the Year, a World Best XI was also announced and it was chosen from a vote of players around the world and here is the team they selected: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid); Dani Alves (Barcelona), John Terry (Chelsea), Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United), Patrice Evra (Manchester United); Xavi (Barcelona), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Fernando Torres (Liverpool) Interesting, personally I would have picked Inter's Julio Cesar over Iker Casillas who while good was not in my view as steady as he has been in years past. And at right back I would pick the player who is first choice at right back for Brazil ahead of Dani Alves, Maicon also of Inter Milan. In midfield Steven Gerrard had a good first half of the year but has not been as good in the second half. I would pick his England teammate Chelsea's Frank Lampard ahead of him for his overall work throughout 2009. And at center forward I think you could do the same with Lampard's teammate Didier Drogba over Gerrard's teammate Fernando Torres. If we were picking this award for their play in the 2008-9 club season then I would go with both Gerrard and Torres but if it is, as I believe it is, for their play in the calendar year 2009 then Lampard and Drogba have in my opinion been superior to Gerrard and Torres. Any other opinions on this subject? |

Iker Casillas (Real Madrid); Dani Alves (Barcelona), John Terry (Chelsea), Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United), Patrice Evra (Manchester United); Xavi (Barcelona), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Fernando Torres (Liverpool) My best XI for the calendar year 2009: GK-Buffon (Juventus) RB- Maicon (Inter) CB- Terry (Chelsea) CB- Puyol (Barcelona) LB- Evra (Manchester United) DMF-Essien (Chelsea) MF-Xavi (Barcelona) MF- Iniesta (Barcelona) FW- Lionel Messi (Barcelona) FW- Fernando Torres (Liverpool) FW- Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid/Manchester United) Unlike raconteur, I do think Torres was betetr overall throughout 2009 than Drogba and this gets my vote at center forward. I decided to select a defensive midfielder and after consideirng Mascherano, L. Diarra, Toulalan and Cambiasso, I settled on Michael Essien. I also picked Puyol at centerback over Vidic who i thought did not play well in the 2nd part of 2009. Puyol meanwhile was the heart and sole of the defense on the team which won 6 titles in the calendar year. And Gigi Buffon still remains the world's best goalkeeper in my eyes. |

Raconteur, I like the way you think. My first choice world Xi would be identical to the one you selected, with Lampard beating out Gerrard, Drogba ahead of Torres, Maicon rather than Dani Alves and Julio Cesar instead of Casillas. I am wondering if Vidic really should be first choice? I can understand manzanares' argument in favor of Puyol but think until the last month or two, Vidic has been the better overall defender. Puyol is a great leader and a dogged player, but Vidic the superior overall defender in my view. |

My Best XI for the calendar year 2009 would be: GK: Julio Cesar (Inter Milan) RB: Maicon (Inter) CB: Gerard Pique (Barcelona) CB: John Terry (Chelsea) LB: Ashley Cole (Chelsea) MF: Michael Essien (Chelsea) MF: Xavi (Barcelona) MF: Andres Iniesta (Barcelona) RW: Lionel messi (Barcelona) CF: Fernando Torres (Liverpool) LW: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) I selected Julio Cesar over my personal favorite Iker Casillas because I felt Casillas had a down year by his high standards. Maicon is a better all around player than Dani Alves, although both are great. Pique with his power in the air and distribution even more than Puyol is the reason why Barca's defense is so strong. Cole is in my eyes slightly ahead of Evra at left back. I wanted to select a defensive midfielder which is why I went with Essien over players like Lampard or Gerrard. At center forward, I chose Torres over Villa, Ibrahimovic, Eto'o and Drogba. Some selections were easy-Messi, Ronaldo, Xavi and Iniesta but the other positions were not easy to settle on a first choice. |

I would agree on the whole, but I think that certain doubts (caused, perhaps, by a certain Fernando Torres) have crept into his game in the recent past. Obviously this doesn't negate all the good things he's done over the last year, but it's something to be thinking about as we move into 2010. |

An excellent point Sporting and I too think Vidic has not been the same player since last season's game vs Torres and Liverpool. He is still a top notch central defender but I would not name him first choice on a World Best XI. If Rio Ferdinand had not been injured so much this year I would have put him in there instead. But because of those injuries I have picked Puyol. So my team would be: ----------------------Casillas----------------------- Maicon--------Puyol---------Terry-----------Evra -----------------------Essien----------------------- ----------------Xavi------------Iniesta------------ Messi----------------Drogba----------------Ronaldo |

i like nkono's selection for an ideal team for 2009. His main differences from other posters choices are Puyol at centerback and Essien at defensive midfield. I agree with selecting both of them, two agreessive, all energy players who make their respective etams better. |
