To nobody's surprise Lionel Messi won the Balon d'Or given out by France Football to the player of the year in European football. What was surprising was his margin of victory, as he was almost an unanimous choice. Here was the final vote totals: Results of the Golden Ball awarded Tuesday by France Football magazine: 1. Lionel Messi (Argentina, FC Barcelona), 473 points. 2. Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal, Real Madrid), 233. 3. Xavi (Spain, FC Barcelona), 170. 4. Andres Iniesta (Spain, FC Barcelona), 149. 5. Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon, Inter Milan), 75. 6. Kaka (Brazil, Real Madrid), 58. 7. Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Sweden, FC Barcelona), 50. 8. Wayne Rooney (England, Manchester United), 35. 9. Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast, Chelsea), 33. 10. Steven Gerrard (England, Liverpool), 32. 11. Fernando Torres (Spain, Liverpool), 22. 12. Cesc Fabregas (Spain, Arsenal), 13. 13. Messi won this award in the 1st half of 2009 with his play with Barcelona leading them to their triple of titles won. But I have to ask has Messi been the best player in the 2nd half of the year? I don't really think so. i can still see him winning the Balon d'Or but not by such a large margin. |

You have a point Sammy, in fact some may even argue Messi is not even the best player on his own club, Xavi and Iniesta, 3rd and 4th in this France Football poll can challenge him. I don't have a problem with Messi winning this award but like Sammy I think the margin of victory does not accurately reflect what transpired on the field of play during 2009. Let us see if the FIFA World Player of the Year vote is similarly disproportionately in favor of Messi. |

The FIFA World Player of the year was similarly disproportionately in favor of Leo Messi with Cristiano Ronaldo a distant second and Xavi third. The FIFA award is voted on by the national team coaches and captains by the way. |
