Oh no Claudio Gentile rears his head in a discussion! Actually I like your analogy Pepe, and the image of Ardiles and Zico with torn shirts is one of the enduring ones I have from the 1982 World Cup. Yes, Juanito did grab a chunk of Zigic's shirt, how even with an extra set of eyes they missed that I do not know because everybody in the stadium knew Zigic at 2 meters tall was the intended recipient of the ball. |

 Valencia slam extra officials after Europa exit[/url You gotta love Cesar's comment, “I can’t believe they didn’t see it,” he was quoted as saying. “To blow for a penalty in the 86th minute for the visiting team in the return leg of a knockout competition, you need to have great strength of character. “Next year, I won’t bring my watch in case they steal that as well.” Actually he better bring his chequebook as he will likely be getting fined for that comment, true as it may be.

Semifinal first leg results: Hamburg 0-0 Fulham Atletico Madrid 1-0 Liverpool Two games, 1 goal by Diego Forlan and that was after he missed a header and somehow pushed the loose ball past Reina and into the net. Atletico will likely regret not taking advantage of their opportunities but Reina, playing in the stadium where hs father helped lead Atletico to a European Cup Final in the mid 1970s, made some good stops. Aguero should be back next week for leg 2 which will help Atletico, Liverpool though will still be missing Torres and without him they look pretty punchless in attack. I did not see Fulham's draw at Hamburg but that is an excellent result for the revelation of this year's tournament. |

Atleti are a different team with Aguero and have performed better away from home in every round of the Europa League so far (twice qualifying on away goals, and winning their other away leg). It won't be as easy for Liverpool as some of the English commentators are assuming. Good result for Fulham in Hamburg, though they would have loved to get a goal (even if they gave one up). |

I am glad you pointed this out because it is precisely what I was thinking. I am pretty content with this 1-0 win for Atleti, the big thing is Liverpool did not score an away goal and ursus is right that Atletico particularly with Aguero back are dangerous on the break. An Atletico goal next week and Liverpool will need to score 3 and without Torres that will not be easy for them. Give Pepe Reina credit though as he pulled off a couple of very good saves to hold Atletico to the one goal. Jose Antonio Reyes seems to enjoy playing against English clubs and he was very good. hamburg-Fulham was i thought apretty dull match, Fulham can be ecused for playing conservtaively on te road but Hamburg played way too cautiously at home. |

manzanares that is a good remark about Liverpool without Fernando Torres, where will the goals come from? Kuyt and Gerrard are the likely candidates but when I have seen them this season gerrard has not looked as good as he has in past seasons. Does anybody else share this view about Gerrard? |

I think virtually everyone* shares that view about Gerrard. The question is why. * with the possible exception of Merseyside juries . . . |

Saving himself for the World Cup? I find it inherently hard to give credit to Atletico Madrid but Quique Sanchez Flores has if nothing else solidifed Atletico's defense since taking over. And teenaged goalie David DeGea looks like a real find. With DeGea, centerback Alvaro Dominguez and midfielder Nacho Camacho, Atletico's cantera (youth team) has been producing some productive players recently. |

Time for the return legs of the Europa League semifinals and the great opportunity for upstarts Fulham to make a European Final. The club have never won the league or a major Cup competition, their ebst finish being FA Cup runner up in 1975 so this is a potentially historic accomplishment if they do advance to the Europa League Final. Meanwhile up at Anfield, Liverpool try and make up their one goal disadvantage versus Atletico Madrid. |

Fulham's dream continues, they were being outplayed by hamburg and down 1-0 to a Mladen petric goal when Simon Davies scored a brilliant goal, controlling the ball, flicking it up and over the defender and then putting it in the back of the net! 6 minutes later Zoltan Gera turns insie the box and makes it 2-1 and that is how it ended. What a great accomplishment for this club, as onslow wrote they have never before been here, now they can dream of a first ever championship! They do not yet know their rivals as Liverpool beat Atletico Madrid 1-0 with a goal by Acquilani just before the end of the first half. So it is on to extra time. |

And it will be Atletico Madrid. Benyaoun puts Liverpool ahead in extra time, only for Forlan's goal later to put Atleti through on away goals. If anyone had predicted that the final would match Fulham and Atleti, I would be most interested in subscribing to their newsletter. And hearty congratulations to Manzanares. What a bizarre season this has been for your club! |

Well done to both Atletico Madrid and Fulham, we have discussed this in year's past with the then UEFA Cup but this in my opinion is what this tournament is for giving clubs like Atletico and Fulham not used to success, the opportunity to achieve some international honors. It is refreshing to see clubs like this in this final, no matter how improbable it might be! |

Many thanks for the good wishes, and yes it has been a bizarre season for Atletico but this was a good accomplishment elminating Liverpool and advancing to the final. During the week Forlan ahd said he has had success against Liverpool in his career and that again proved true in this match. In all honestly Atletico have been mediocre in the league with one exception, the win at the Calderon over Barcelona but the team have played well in Cup competitions and have a chance to win a double as they are in the Copa del Rey and now Europa League Finals. I have a lot of respect for what Fulham have done to advance to this final, they have beaten some good clubs along the way. valenciano is right, this competition is a good way for clubs like Fulham, with no international titles and Atletico who last won an international tourney in 1962 (the Recopa), to achieve some success |

Congratulations manzanares on Atletico's advancement as they really have become a Cup team haven't they? Quique Sanchez Flores has stabilized the team and made them more disciplined defensively, they still are a bit inconsistent but have the talent to be very dangerous opponents for most every club. And Forlan, as he often does, is ending the season well. He just seems to get better as a season progresses, speaks well of his fitness and mental strength. And Fulham have been an incredible story, Roy Hodgson is making a name for hismelf as perhaps the best current English coach. Another team which has no quit in it, they should make for a good final opponent for Atletico as both clubs' long suffering fans will have a chance to create a great atmosphere on May 12th in Hamburg. |

Atletico do lack consistency which is why their league seasn ahs been so frustrating but they have focused when in Cup competitions and with players like Forlan, Aguero, Simao and Reyes they have the offensive ability needed to win big matches. I think Quique Sanchez Flores has done a good job coaching them and his most important contribution I think has been reorganising the defence. They do not leak goals as they did earlier in the season. As for Fulham, others have already noted the team's will, they just never seem like they are beaten and repeatedly in the Europa League have come from behnd to win. That shows me a great determination. They may not have many well known names ouyside of Britain but they are the type of hard working, never quit team that fans everywhere can identify with. I like this Final matchup, two clubs with vast differences but who have used this competition to achieve what neither are accustomed to, winning an international trophy. |
