It's a shame football always has to be hijacked by the lunatic fringe. |

The last four clubs to qualify were determiend today. Valencia left it late as David Villa missed a penalty but he made up for that with an injury time goal to give Valencia a 2-1 win over Genoa, a result which sends Valencia through and eliminates Genoa. Anderlecht behind 2 goals from a 16 year old forward, Romelo Lukaku defeated already qualified Ajax 3-1 to also advance to the knockout stages. Lille and Twente Enschede also qualfiied today to complete the 32 team field for Friday's draw. Interestingly Red Bull Salzburg were the only club who had a 100% record in group play. |

Some good matchups there particularly Ajax-Juventus, Hamburg-PSV; Villarreal-Wolfsburg, Atletico Madrid-Galatasaray and Twente-Werder Bremen. Everton got pounded by Benfica in the group stages and now get drawn with Benfica's weaker city rivals Sporting Lisbon. Benfica probably are not complaining about getting Hertha Berlin the last place team in the Bundesliga. While Athletic Bilbao-Anderlecht could look like an U-17 game with each club giving playing time to young players this season! |

Not a friendly draw for any of the Dutch clubs, and think the three most attractive game sin this round will involve those clubs-Ajax vs Juventus, Hamburg vs PSV and Twente vs Werder Bremen. The old UEFA Cup used to get some good game sby the quarterfinals, but this inaugural Europa League ahs some excellent round of 32 games. Should be enjoyable to see how this tournament plays out. |

Tuesday's result: Everton 2-1 Sporting Lisbon Thursday's results: Rubin Kazan 3 - 0 Hapoel Tel Aviv Ajax Amsterdam 1 - 2 Juventus Club Brugge 1 - 0 Valencia Twente Enschede 1 - 0 Werder Bremen Lille 2 - 1 Fenerbahce Standard Liege 3 - 2 RB Salzburg Villarreal 2 - 2 Wolfsburg Athletic Bilbao 1 - 1 Anderlecht Atletico Madrid 1 - 1 Galatasaray FC Copenhagen 1 - 3 Marseille Fulham 2 - 1 Shakhtar Donetsk Hamburger SV 1 - 0 PSV Eindhoven Hertha BSC 1 - 1 Benfica Liverpool 1 - 0 Unirea Urziceni Panathinaikos 3 - 2 AS Roma A lot of competitive games this round, with the notable results to me being Juve's away win in Amsterdam over Ajax with 2 goals by Amauri and another good performance from Alessandro Del Piero. Marseille won 3-1 at Copenhagen while Roma failed to get their 21st straight game without defeat as they threw away a 2-1 lead in the last 10 minutes away to Panathinaikos. |

Benfica showed why they are in first place in Portugal as they crushed the Bundesliga's bottom club Hertha Berlin 4-0 for a 5-1 aggregate win and a likely matchup in the next round with Marseille which could turn out to be quite a game. Benfica are having their best season in years in their league and if last night was any indication they could be poised for a good run in Europe too. |

http://sports.yahoo.com/soccer/news?slug=r...uters&type=lgns A review of Thursday's Europa League games. Notable matches were Diego Forlan's 90th minute goal which gave Atletico Madrid a 3-2 win over Galatasaray. Gala's rough tactics knocked Sergio Aguero out of the match. PSV looked like they were on the way to a win over hamburg but the german club replied with 2 goals to advance on away goals. Roma scored first at home on Panathinaikos but the Greek league lwaders came back and advanced after winning 3-2 on the night, 6-4 overall. Fulham knocked off Shakhtar Donetsk, the last UEFA Cup winner. |

It was a great result for Fulham to knock out the holders Shakhtar. This of course is the club who were absolutely doomed to relegation in 2008, but got Roy Hodgson in as boss and he effected a miraculous escape. With the same squad of players, he had them in the top half of the table throughout last season and qualified them for Europe, and now this season they're in the top half once more and are through to the last 16 of the Europa League and the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. That's as close to alchemy as a football coach is going to get! Hodgson has said all along that they're prioritising their FA Cup run this year, and as they now have Juventus you kind of think their days in Europe this season would be numbered whether they prioritised it or not. But then, the way they played when they beat Liverpool 3-1 and United 3-0 this season already, who knows? I also watched Everton, who were doing fine for 65 minutes in Lisbon against Sporting until tey conceded a vital goal. They came close a few times themselves but got picked off twice on the break in the last ten minutes. No trophy for the Toffees this season then, not they have to concentrate on a high league finish. Last 16: Atletico Madrid v Sporting Lisbon Benfica v Marseille Hamburg v Anderlecht Juventus v Fulham Lille v Liverpool Panathinaikos v Standard Liege Rubin Kazan v Wolfsburg Valencia v Werder Bremen |

Last 16: Atletico Madrid v Sporting Lisbon Benfica v Marseille Hamburg v Anderlecht Juventus v Fulham Lille v Liverpool Panathinaikos v Standard Liege Rubin Kazan v Wolfsburg Valencia v Werder Bremen Hamburg-Anderlecht sounds like a repeat matchup from those clubs' heyday in the early 80s, but Anderlecht has some 16 year old forward who is really tearing it up. You know a bigger club will likely soon come calling for him but you would also hope that for the young player's development that he could stay with Anderlecht a few more seasons. Good matchups between Benfica-Marseille and Valencia-Werder Bremen. |

Round of 16 first leg results: Atletico Madrid 0 - 0 Sporting Lisbon Hamburger SV 3 - 1 Anderlecht Lille 1 - 0 Liverpool Rubin Kazan 1 - 1 Wolfsburg Benfica 1 - 1 Marseille Juventus 3 - 1 Fulham Panathinaikos 1 - 3 Standard Liege Valencia 1 - 1 Werder Bremen Hamburg and Juventus were the big winners at home, each securing two goal victories, Lille got a goal from young Belgian hotshot Eden Hazard to beat Liverpool as those were the only 3 home teams to win on Thursday. Marseille and Wolfsburg with late goals to tie away to Benfica and Rubin Kazan, Atletico Madrid were awful and played a 0-0 draw with Sporting even with the Portuguese club finishing the game with 9 men. Leidson of Sporting came closest of anybody to score in a drab affair. Juan Mata scored to give 10 man Valencia (Banega sent off) a draw at home with Werder Bremen. The biggest surprise to me was Standard Liege's 3-1 win in Athens against Panathinaikos. |

Banega has been a good addition for Valencia but like his teammate Carlos Marchena, he does have a tendency to collect red cards. But even before his expulsion Valencia were down a goal. The draw still gives them hope in leg 2 but Werder Bremen looked good in leg 1. A great result for Sporting Lisbon away to Atletico, and Marseille's late goal gives them the slight advantage over Benfica. |

There are some dramatic games going on today in the Europa League, I leave the details for once the games become finals, but Valencia and Werder Bremen are in a 4-4 game. Fulham just came back from a 3-1 first leg deficit to Juventus and won game 2 4-1! Game winning goal a great chip to the far post by substitute Clint Dempsey! I did not see all of the match but what I did see Fulham out thought, out worked and outplayed Juventus. Zamora and Duff were very influential in their win. |

Valencia hang on in Bremen and go through. Benfica beat OM in Marseille with an injury time winner. Standard beat Panathinaikos (again). These three clubs join Fulham in the last eight, as the last four matches kick off (Liverpool already lead on an early penalty, as do Atleti in Lisbon through Kun). |
