Yes, there was a layer of turf hastily laid down on the pitch for the CL final of 2008. And Juande Ramos will have to get about somewhere else now. CSKA have sacked him after just 6 weeks in the job, having previously sacked Zico last month. Wonder whose turn it will be to get the chop next month? |

Looking forward to Tuesday's Milan-Real Madrid match. How quickly things change in 2 weeks time, last time they met it was Milan reeling and desperately needing the win, which they achieved. Nesta should be back after his injury and as we were discussing in the Serie A thread, Dida has strangely been transformed from that horrible error he made which gifted Madrid the opening goal 2 weeks ago into a shot stopping star for Milan. He looks like the Dida from 4-5 years who when he was one of the world's top keepers. I have not seen Real Madrid play since that first Milan match but reading the Spanish league thread here even the Madrid fans were not all that impressed with their weekend win over Getafe. Ronaldo I understand will still be missing but Kaka gets his homecoming at the San Siro. I am curious to see how he will be greated. i expect with applause. |

Kaka going against his old club in his return to the San Siro plus the reborn Ronaldinho and Dida with Milan. Should be a very entertaining game, much as the first match between the two was. Looks like Inter's game in Kiev will be played behind clsoed doors due to the flu outbreak. So Inter gets a break in a game they need to win to climb off the bottom of their close group. |

Here is Tuesday's complete schedule of games, 20:45 Bayern v Girondins de Bourdeaux 20:45 Maccabi Haifa v Juventus 20:45 Besiktas v Wolfsburg 20:45 Manchester United v CSKA Moscow 20:45 Milan v Real Madrid 20:45 O. Marseille v FC Zürich 20:45 APOEL Nicosia v Oporto 20:45 Atlético Madrid v Chelsea Almost a last chance for Atletico Madrid to stay in the race for a second round spot but that group could be decided tonight if both Chelsea and Porto win. Big match of course in Milan, a city which has not been too kind to Real Madrid in the past. I still have nightmares about one of my favorite Madrid teams of all time, La Quinta del Buitre bunch with Butragueno, Michel, Hugo Sanchez going to San Siro and getting bombed by the Milan of Gullit, van Basten, Rijkaard and Baresi. With Juventus favored to win in Israel against Haifa, Bayern Munich is really in need of some points at home tonight against Bordeaux. That should, along with Milan-Madrid be the matchup of the day. |

5-0 was the final score that day in the semifinal of the then European Champions Cup. This article is in Spanish but for thode who can read it is worth reading for some detail of that game, with special emphasis on Franco Baresi whose directing the trap continually caught Real Madrid offside in that game: http://es.eurosport.yahoo.com/futbol/ruben...a/article/4713/ Here for those interested were the lineups the two clubs used on that night of 19 April, 1989: Milan: Galli; Tasotti, Maldini, Costacurta, Baresi; Colombo, Donadoni, Ancellotti, Rijkaard; Gullit y Van Basten. Real Madrid:Buyo; Chendo, Gordillo, Sanchís, Gallego; Martín Vázquez, Míchel, Schuster, Paco Llorente, Butragueño y Hugo. The coaches, Arrigo Sacchi and Leo Beenhakker. This means, "There is nothing comparable to the pleasure in knowing you were more intelligent than your adversary...That Milan intuited the plays, interpreted them and won with intelligence. To win with talent is beautiful but to win with intelligence is the maximum." Great words from the best defender I ever saw play. |

With Winslow gone I will try and fill his shoes with Tuesday's Champions League scores on an eventful evening of football, Group A Bayern Munich 0 - 2 Bordeaux Maccabi Haifa 0 - 1 Juventus Group B Besiktas 0 - 3 Wolfsburg Manchester U. 3 - 3 CSKA Moscow Group C AC Milan 1 - 1 Real Madrid Marseille 6 - 1 Zurich Group D APOEL Nicosia 0 - 1 FC Porto Atletico Madrid 2 - 2 Chelsea I watched Milan-Real Madrid and the first half in particular was a highly entertaining game. End to end action with Madrid putting Milan under alot of initial pressure. They scored halfway trough the first half when a Kaka shot was partially deflected, Dida knocked it away but from an angle Benzema put the rebound away. Then Milan got a penalty when a sliding Pepe with an arm raised handled the ball inside the area and Ronaldinho made no mistake from the penalty spot. Pato then should have had a 2nd goal for Milan but the official from Germany who let a lot of contact go in this game without calling anything whistled Pato for a supposed foul on Arbeloa before he scored. In the 2nd half the game was less dynamic but each still had chances to win, Ronaldinho and Pato were each very dangerous for Milan on attack and Thiago Silva did well defensively while Kaka was Madrid's best offensive player with Lassana Diarra and Arbeloa the team's top defensive players in this game. Marseille crushed Zurich to move up to 6 points, only one behind Madrid and Milan as this group looks to have an exciting conclusion. I saw the highlights of Bordeaux's win in Germany over Bayern. Plenty of missed opportunities for the Bavarians while Gourcuff scored in the first half for Bordeuax. After Bayern, by now with Robben on the field, missing more chanes, Bordeaux wrapped it up in the 90th minute when Chamakah got past his marker and goalie Butt missed the ball outside the penalty area. Juve with a 1-0 win in Israel and these two results mean Bordeaux are assured a top two finish and a spot in the second round. They have 10 points, Juventus 8, Bayern 4 and Haifa 0. Bayern will need plenty of help if they are to move by Juve for the 2nd spot in this group. Wolfsburg scored 2 late goals to break open a close game in Turkey and win 3-0 over Besiktas while Manchester United, with their eyes on Chelsea in the league on Sunday, rested some players and paid a price as CSKA Moscow led 3-1. But 2 late goals, one by Scholes, the other in added time from Valencia enabled Manchester to maintain its unbeaten record at home in Europe and assured them a top two finish in the group and advancement to the next round. Porto have not been pretty but again they scored a 1 goal win over APOEL of Cyprus to clinch a 2nd round spot. Didier Drogba scored twice and Sergio Aguero, battling a groin injury, came off the ebncha dn also scored two times, the last in added time, to give Atletico a 2-2 draw with Chelsea. It was probably Atletico's best game in Europe this year but like Porto, Chelsea are through to the next round. Nice link Don Balon, and those are wise words from Franco Baresi. |

I enjoyed the link about the 1989 matchup between Milan and Real Madrid and especially the comments from Franco Baresi, he truly was a fantastic defender and proof you do not have to be big and fast to be a great defender, but you must be intelligent which is what perfectly describes Baresi. Good game as Merengue pointed out between Milan and Madrid. Tough break for Milan with the Pato goal being called back. That is a legit goal by Milan in each match against Madrid which inexplicably was called back. Madrid did come with the right attitude and tried taking the play to Milan with Kaka and Benzema who I thought were very active. But Ronaldinho, who even was tracking back and tackling the ball away, was playing well and his vision really helped make Milan dangerous almost every time they went forward and Pato's speed and movement make him a real threat. While I think Milan should have had that 2nd goal from Pato, overall I can't complain about the result, a tie was just between two evenly matched teams who put on a good show, for the 2nd time in 2 weeks. I am a little surprised that four teams assured 2nd round spots today. No shock Chelsea and Porto did it as they've been dominant in their group. I guess the same coudl also be said for Manchester United, even using a lot of 2nd teamers today, but Bordeaux not only winning home and away against Bayern Munich but completely controlling what looked like a competitive group, has in my mind been the surprise so far of this season's Champions League. |

Good link about that 1989 Milan-Real Madrid game and the Baresi quotes. Here is an interview Baresi did with El Pais, a Spanish daily: http://www.elpais.com/articulo/deportes/Ra...elpepudep_6/Tes In it he says Sacchi's Milan were very well prepared and at times he and his defensive partners-Tassotti, Maldini and Costacurta would sometimes defend in practice against 17 attackers! Now that will either drive you crazy or get you well prepared! Baresi also makes some comments on the current Madrid team, such as he thinks Raul's presence keeps Kaka from playing where he is most effective, as a 2nd forward, just behind a center forward. he also criticizes Sergio Ramos defensive wrk and says he would be a good centerback but is lost at right back. Easy to se ehow he draws that conclusion. Anyway it is way too long an interview to translate but if you can read Spanish or even try an online translator, it is an interview worth reading. On to present matters, Milan-Madrid was an entertaining game, as others wrote, the first half especially was played at an intense pace. Yes, Pato's goal should have counted but I am with raconteur, overall it was a pretty evenly played game and neither club can have any real complaints about the final result. Ronaldinho was working hard in this game and had a few wonderful passes, the kind he used to make 3-4 years ago. A quiet game from Higuain but Raul who came on for him nearly won it with a snap shot which Dida did very well to knock away. Both Milan and Madrid still have to play Marseille and those matches will decide which two of the three advance. Milan's advantage is they will play Marseille at home while Madrid will have to travel to France. I agree about Bordeaux being one of the tournament's revelations so far. Appears as if they learned a lot from last season when they missed out on qualification. There is something to say for experience. But Bordeaux are also proving to be more than just Yoan Gourcuff. |

Explain to me again why Milan got rid of Gourcuff and are allowing Beckham to return??? The next Zidane & you let him go??? Not good business, especially after letting Kaka go. I still don't see the logic. L'OM.....Man, if they could have kept both Nasri & Cisse, I think they would have been unstoppable. Cisse>>>>Morientes. Actually Altidore might be better than both Cisse or Morientes, but Didier Deschamp has a plan. I thought letting Cana go, but picking up E. Cisse was the right thing to do. Right now, both Milan & RM have to be worried about L'OM. L'OM = Dr. Jeckel & Mr. Hyde

That 5-0 was one of the greatest club performances I've ever seen (and a more pleasant memory for one with blaugrana tendancies than the 4-0 in Athens). Pato's goal definitely should have stood, but I thought the penalty was very harsh. The ref was unimpressive and inconsistent in general, and Madrid's defence continues to be a concern, OL will have to put on a show tomorrow to match their countrymen. Should they do so, Liverpool will be virtually eliminated. |

I side with ursus the penalty against Pepe was a bit harsh, I was not even sure it hit him on the arm, looked more like the underarm to me. But as others wrote, a tie was a pretty fair result in a pretty good match. I guess Pellegrini has bought himself some more time with the weekend league win over Getafe and this draw at Milan. Next up is Atletico in the league. On the subject of Atletico, they did play pretty well against Chelsea but still was not enough to save themselves. With their precarious league psition, currently in the relegation zone, maybe it is best they concentrate at home and forget about Europe for now? |

Milan did not have much choice this past summer as when they loaned him to Bordeaux the year before Bordeaux insisted on a purchase clause. Milan loaned him out because he was not going to play much with Kaka and Ronaldinho around. Gourcuff succeeded at Bordeaux, winning the French title and player of the season award, and he did not want to return to Milan even with Kaka leaving as he did not like the way they initially treated him. Milan's loss has been Bordeaux's benefit. It has been a good tournament so far for French clubs but Bordeaux's play has been a real bright light this season. I still like Juve's chances in this group as it is Bayern who are really hurting now. Without Ribery and Robben in and out of the lineup with injuries, they don't have any offense. You can't really blame the forwards as they need somebody to supply them, this is where players like Schweinsteiger has failed in my opinion. But Luca Toni blew his fair share of opportunities against Bordeaux on Tuesday. About Juve, they seem to be carrying on with a minimum of effort, doing just enough to win. A pair of slim wins over Haifa count the same as 5-0 wins though, so who am I to complain? ![]() Looking forward to Lyon-Liverpool on Wednesday. I understand Gerrard will still be out though. |

The consolation is Atletico played pretty well, and took the play to the mighty Chelsea. The reality however is a couple of usual defensive lapses and Drogba scored twice and now Atletico are eliminated from advancing out of the group stage. There is still hope for a Europa Cup spot but as valenciano writes the team should probably focus more on the league now. There is some optimism with Quique Sanchez Flores' arrival as coach and I liked how he had the team prepared for this Chelsea game. Now his challenge is to build on that. Starting this weekend against Real Madrid would be a good place to begin. How about Bayern Munich's predicament? It is more than a lack of midfield creativity with Ribery and Robben hurt, look how poorly Toni, Klose and Gomez are finishing. It is not as if they've been without scoring opportunities this season, both in league play and in Europe. With their struggles this term, how long before that powder keg explodes in Munich? |

Bloody hell, no wonder that backline looked so good, it was a relief for them playing against a team of 11 players! I could not make out everything baresi said in those interviews with an online translator but I got the gist of it plus the translation provided here where Baresi notes how Milan won through intelligence. Juventus and Ajax had some excellent teams in the mid 90s, Real Madrid at the turn of this century were formidable as well and the jury is still out on the current Manchester United and Barcelona teams but in my mind no club epitomised the combination of skill and intelligence like those wonderful Milan teams of the late 80s. Maybe only the Cruyff led Ajax in the early 70s and the Beckenbauer led Bayern of the mid 70s were comparable to them. Back to the 21st Century, Bordeuax with a deserving win at the Allianz Arena last night. They defended well, took advantage of their opportunities and in Gourcuff had a player capable of delivering in the big moments. Bayern I think are paying the price now or better yet are going through the growing pains of using some young players in key positions. In the long run that should pay off with some battle tested young players but right now the team are looking vulnerable. Hans Jorg Butt had been doing all right in goal but last night he was awful, his mistakes contributedmightily to both Bordeaux goals. But as discussed here, it is Bayern's inability to finish which is really letting them down. Bordeaux may be able to help Bayern on the next match day when they host Juventus but if they do defeat Juventus, Bayern will still have to go to Turin on the final day and defeat Juventus. Currently Bayern do not look capable of doing that. |
