Well then, let's get on with it. Tuesday's games...
.
.
.
.
.
.
Group E: Liverpool 1, Lyon 2; Debrecen 3, Fiorentina 4.
Group F: Barcelona 1, Rubin Kazan 2; Inter Milan 2, Dynamo Kyiv 2.
Group G: Rangers 1, Unirea 4; Stuttgart 1, Sevilla 3.
Group H: AZ Alkmaar 1, Arsenal 1; Olympiakos 2, Standard Liege 1.

Good gravy Marie, as my grandmother used to say, what a set of results. I'll let others respond to the Barca upset; I switched off the boring (at that moment) Liverpool match midway through the second half and picked up the far more entertaining action at the San Siro. No goals after the 55th minute or so (Suazo scored an apparent winner in injury time but was correctly flagged for offside), but at least half a dozen how-did-he-miss-that moments.

And my, what has happened to Scottish football (to coin a phrase  )?

Definitely a day of surprises and a great time for visiting clubs. Lyon looked good at Liverpool. They had to use a makeshift defense with all of their central defenders injured but Cris, and then he gets a knock to the head and has to go out. So in comes youngster Maxime Gonalons and he scores the first goal. Nice buildup on the second goal as well as Lyon engaged in some slick passing to open up Liverpool's defense. And when needed Hugo Lloris came up with a couple of big saves. A nice start to the season for the new look Lyon.

A real surprising set of results on Tuesday, tough to follow that up today and so far Manchester United and CSKA Moscow are not playing a real exciting game, 0-0 after 80 minutes as I type.

A good result for Fiorentina on the road even against weakened opposition but their real test will come in the final 2 games when they play Lyon and Fiorentina.

I don't know what to say about Inter, frankly if Shevchenko finishes some of those chances, Kyiv wins that game. There is something about playing in Europe which does not sit well with Inter even with a successful Champions League coach like Mourinho leading them.

Looking forward to Madrid-Milan, hope it does not follow the trend of other marquee matchups in the previous rounds of this year's competition.

Tough blow for Arsenal giving up that injury time goal to AZ but a tie still leaves the Gunners in control of the group. AZ, as mentioned in the Dutch Eredivisie thread are in some serious financial difficulties.

And Wednesday's results...
.
.
.
.
.
.
Group A: Bordeaux 2, Bayern Munich 1; Juventus 1, Maccabi Haifa 0.
Group B: CSKA Moscow 0, Manchester Utd 1; Wolfsburg 0, Besiktas 0.
Group C: FC Zurich 0, Marseille 1; Real Madrid 2, AC Milan 3.
Group D: Chelsea 4, Atletico Madrid 0; Porto 2, APOEL Nicosia 1.

Better luck for the EPL sides tonight, but the real barn-burner was at the Bernabeu--at least it was after Milan finally woke up in the second half. After Real was denied a clear penalty early in the match, it took the lead on a terrible mistake by Dida--he spilled an easy shot and Raul picked up the loose ball and scored.

That was it until the hour mark, when Milan scored twice: first, an optionless Pirlo wound up from 30 yards and put the ball just inside the near post of Casillas, who should've saved it; then Ambrosini hit a fantastic long ball that carried to just outside the area, where the bounce deceived the keeper and put Pato through to score into an empty net. Real tied it about ten minutes later, as Raul hit a corner straight to Drenthe at the edge of the area; the substitute hit a fierce grass-cutter that went through a few legs and past a diving Dida at the near post.

In the final minutes, Milan had all the best chances. With a few minutes left, a corner went off Casillas's fists and into the net, but the ref waved it off--he apparently thought Thiago Motta had interfered with the keeper, but it was actually Sergio Ramos who bumped Casillas. But it didn't matter, as shortly thereafter Seedorf looped a cross over Real's defenders to an unmarked Pato, who thumped a volley into the net for the winner.

Winslow has described the game well, a frustrating night for Madrid and one of the worst games I have seen from Casillas in some time. I guess even Superman has off days! :D

But apart from Casillas who has rescued Madrid so many times, the team seemed to lack ideas and Kaka's old teammates knew how to control him well. I did not think Ronaldinho did much for Milan either as Lass Diarra had him controlled but defensive errors let Madrid down and a struggling Milan came away from the Bernabeu with the win. Remembering what the great Sacchi coached Milan did to the excellent Quinta del Buitre Real Madrid teams in the late 80s, Milan is not a team I look forward to playing, tonight's game did not change my mind.

Well at least Barcelona also lost yesterday and today Atletico Madrid were blown away by Chelsea. How long will Abel Resino last at Atletico?

Atletico were patetico and they have dug themselves quite a hole both at home and now in Europe. Chelsea will punish mistake prone teams like Atletico.

And Real Madrid, well as even gaviota, a committed madridista wrote, the team were mistake filled and when even Casillas is making errors you know Madrid are going to be in trouble. Looks like the club are missing Cristiano Ronaldo after all. A subdued game from Kaka, and as gaviota points out, from Ronaldinho too. But the youngster Alexandre Pato came through big for Milan. Nesta looked back to near his pre injury form too.

And guess who scored Marseille's goal against Zurich? Gabriel Heinze, Marseille's win puts them back in the fight for a top two finish in the group.

Juve made it more difficult for themselves against Maccabi than you would have expected, but a win is a win whether it is 1-0 or 7-0. Juve are going through a bit of a rough patch since Diego injured himself a month ago, even though he is back, the dynamic play from before has not returned and that has weakened the entire team.

I was pleasantly surprised with Milan's win tonight. I really wa snot expecting much from the team at the Bernabeu but they did expose madrid's defensive frailities and even Casillas could not save them in this one. Fine game from Pato who ran Marcelo all over the field and finished well on both goals. Strange to see Casillas make as many errors in this game, a golaie of his caliber will make a mistake here and there but you really don't expect so many in one game from him. Well Milan took advantage of those errors and pulled off the win. As somebody else wrote, Nesta was superb, good to see him returning to form.

But Dida, what happened on that first goal? As bad a mistake by a keeper as you will see. He was in such a hurry to throw the ball out his knee knocked the ball right out of his hands and Raul pounced on it and put it away.

Sounds like a wild game in Bordeaux, they won 2-1 with 2 goals by defenders, one a backheeled goal by Ciani who had also scored Bayern's goal with an own goal, Bordeaux missed 2 penalties and Bayern had two players, Muller and van Buyten sent off!

That was as poor of game I have seen from Iker Casillas since he was a teenager. Not what you expect but the book on Madrid is if you can put them under pressure defensively, they will crack eventually. This time it happened from an unexpected source, Casillas, but Marcelo, Albiol, Pepe and Ramos all had trouble containing Milan when they went forward. And that is even with Lassana Diarra in front of them playing very well. Madrid's future opponents will have taken note.

Madrid's poor play cheered me up after Barca's loss on Tuesday. Marcelo and Sergio Ramos just don't seem to mark anyone.

About Barcelona, it was a poor play but was the first bad game of the season for the club, I can live with that especially as they still lead their group.

I have to agree about Casillas. An occasional error can be understood, everybody does those but for a goalie of his quality to make as many mistakes as he did in this game is just amazing. Hopefully that won't be repeated anytime soon. Like Dr. Z wrote it was the fullbecks Marcelo and Ramos more than the central defenders who I thought had a rough time of it for Madrid. But credit to Milan too for picking their spots to move forward and finishing effectively.

Haha, I liked the line from several weeks ago about Rubin Kazan sounding like a film director. I thought he was the husband of Lainie Kazan, the singer/actress who played the mother in My Big Fat Greek Wedding!

Whomever he is, Rubin Kazan did a good job on Barcelona and are close to winning their second consecutive Russian league title.

I certainly can not gloat about both Real Madrid and Barcelona losing this week as Chelsea just destroyed Atletico Madrid. As somebody else wrote, Chelsea are a club who show no mercy and they feated on a dispirited Atletico. Not the type of club you would want to meet in Atletico's current position.

The consolation was Porto only beat APOEL 2-1 in Portugal. The Cypriots gave them a good game of it and everything i read noted it was a sloppy match by Porto. So despite the hole Atletico have dug themselves, it may still be possible to get out of if they can win their final two matches against Porto and APOEL. But that may also requir enot losing in 2 weeks when Atleti host Chelsea.

I watched some of Manchester United's win in Moscow against CSKA. I was wondering if when Man United played Chelsea there a few years ago in the Champions Legaue Final if the artificial surface had been covered with a layer of grass? I recall the final being played on the natural stuff. Anybody know?

I also did not know Juande Ramos is CSKA Moscow's new coach. The man gets about.
