And the final score... . . . . . . Inter Milan 2, Bayern Munich 0! Zanetti lifts the trophy, but Milito really earned it for the Nerazzuri by scoring two goals on two fine finishes (and nearly getting a third, denied by the keeper). I can't say this was a dominating Inter performance--Bayern actually carried the play for long stretches--but if you don't score, you don't win. The first half didn't have a lot of excitement (outside of two Bayern penalty shouts; the second, when Maicon's outstretched arm hit the ball as he leaped for a header, probably should've been called) until a goal kick in the 34th minute. Julio Cesar launched the ball toward Milito, who outjumped DeMichelis to head it to Sneijder, then raced into an open space left by the retreating van Buyten. Sneijder promptly slid the ball back to Milito, who closed on Butt and did a little shimmy before lifting his shot just under the bar. Inter nearly scored again before halftime as Milito set up a wide-open Sneijder, who hit it right at Butt. Inter lollygagged in the locker room before the second half; that upset Bayern enough to nearly produce a goal within 20 seconds, but Muller's finish hit the diving Julio Cesar in the legs. Milito was denied by Butt a minute and a half later, but the Germans did most of the attacking until the 70th minute, when Eto'o picked up the ball at midfield as referee Webb was calling advantage on a Bayern foul. Eto'o passed to Milito, who ran at van Buyten for 30 yards before leaving him for dead on a slick fake at the top of the box. Again, the finish was spot on. So Inter wins the triple--if I was a big espresso drinker I'd know how to say that in Italian--but will Mourinho bother leaving Madrid after this? |

Lollygagged? Had to look that one up on the net! A deserved victory, I think; Bayern didn't quite have the variety to upset a well-organised (as usual) Inter defence. |

It's a tripletta. And no Italian team has ever done it before. Grandissimo Inter. |

Well done to Inter and especially Milito who was excellent. Winslow already described his goals but what set them both up were his feints which left the goalie on the first goal and van Buyten on the second grasping at straws. We discussed a lot about how well Altintop filled in for Ribery in the semifinal 2nd leg but tonight he was missing in action, although Bayern had the ball only Robben at tines was able to create any real danger. And when he did there was Julio Cesar to stop him. As a Milan fan, part of me hurts seeing Inter win this title but it helps Italian football in the UEFA coefficients and frankly for a billionaire sports club president, Massimo Moratti seems like a pretty good guy, nice to see his dream come true with Inter winning the Champions League. ursus, looks like you picked a bad time from a sporting view to give up those Inter season tickets!

This was the Inter we saw in the first leg of the semifinal against barcelona, solid at the back and very dangerous on the counter attack. Milito gets the credit for the goals and his feints which cleared the room for those goals but the entire Inter team played well. The defence was practically inpenetrable. It was Chivu not Zanetti who was chiefly responsible for marking Robben and he did a pretty good job on him until coming off late in the match. Meanwhile Zanetti was his active self in midfield and yes, I am another poster happy to see a classy player like he rewarded with a European Champions League title, especially after Maradona ignored him for Argentina's World Cup squad. |

I think this summarizes the game well, Inter's defense was too much for Bayern who although they had the ball were rarely were dangerous, I recall Julio Cesar really only having to make one good save, and it was a fine one, from Robben's curling shot. Other than that it was Inter who looked more dangerous going forward. Nice goals by Milito, I did not realize he was so inventive a forward on the dribble. As a Brasilian I was happy to see 3 of Brasil's starting defense all play well and lift the trophy for Inter. Would like to see them lifting another one on July 11!

Congratulations to Inter and how about Samuel Etoo winning the triple last year with Barcelona then another this season with Inter? Nice goals by Milito, for those who did not see it, here is a video link to his 2nd, Milito's 2nd Goal I thought Bayern had other opportunities other than Robben's shot nicely saved by Julio Cesar, they especially began the 2nd half well (after the "lollygagging" that Winslow wrote about) and as Andy Gray says on the video link, Muller could have scored just before Milito's 2nd but was not able to finish as Milito did. And who can deny inter's crown as European champions, not only did they win the Italian domestic double but in winning this European title they defeated the English champions (Chelsea), the Spanish champions (Barcelona), and the German champions (Bayern Munich) along the way. |

Absolutely deadly counter attacks from Inter, they did look very dangerous whenever they went forward and were able to isolate Milito against Van Buyten and Demichelis and we saw the results of that. Has Milito made Diego Maradona's selection problems at forward even more difficult? I had forgotten about Chivu and with Thiago Motta suspended, Zanetti returned to midfield while Chivu played in defense and did about as good a job as you can containing Robben. Yes, Ribery's explosiveness was missed by Bayern as Altintop had a subpar game. Of course he also was playing against Maicon, the world's best right back. But I also wonder how different this game would have been if Howard Webb had whistled Maicon for that handball in the first half? As Sammy wrote, Inter did not have an easy path to the final and along the way they beat some excellent teams. It was a long time coming but they finally got their third European championship. And now Massimo Moratti has equaled his father's accomplishments as Inter president. The team deserve praise and now Mourinho likely stays in Madrid as Inter will need to look for a new coach. But that is something to worry about later, for now enjoy the championship, and we got our wish of seeing Zanetti lift that trophy! What does everyone think of playing the final on Saturday? I liked it, and it is a good way to end the European club season. |

A valid question and it did look like a penalty could have been awarded but I feel Sporting is right, Bayern just did not seem to have the variety in attack to break Inter's defense down. Then again if Barcelona could not do that either, who could? Those Inter counters were deadly and it is a good observation noting how Inter got Milito isolated against Bayern's centerbacks and he then worked them over for the two goals. Personally I am tired, however, of Mourinho hogging the headlines. Sure he set up his team well but also give credit to the players for a superb effort. As for playing on a Saturday, I like it too and it set up a more festive setting for we fans. |

I too kept thinking about the first leg of the semifinal vs Barcelona while watching this game too. Inter knew Bayern's weakness defensively and did very well exploiting that just as they did against Barcelona at the San Siro. Bayern did have some chances but could not get through that solid defensive line or Julio Cesar. But you are left wondering what could have been if Ribery had been able to play, not to mention if that penalty had been called. I still maintain Ribery's suspension was excessive and it did end up effecting this final. I like the Saturday final too. Had a good time at my local soccer viewing restaurant with Manzanares, Martin and some other friends. |

A classic counter attacking win for Inter. Let us just say it was a typical Italian performance! Definitely a deserved win though for the nerazzurri, they took Bayern out of their rhythm, Olic, Muller and later Klose and Gomez were non factors in this game. And that is thanks to Mourinho's defensive plan and the great effort by Inter's players. I too like having the final on a Saturday, I think it make sit even more of a special event. |

I think the comments here have reflected my views on the final, Inter's defense and counters, followed by the finishing of Diego Milito were simply too much for Bayern. Mourinho had a great strategy for this game and I agree with those who thought this final reminded them of the first leg of the semifinal vs Barcelona. Inter sat abck, absorbed Bayern's pressure then punished them on the break and always looked the team more likely to score. An excellent win for them but now with Mourinho leaving, they will have some rebuilding to do. It will be curious to see in which direction they will go. |
