I believe I had read where Thiago Motta of Inter also received a 3 match suspension for his red card against Barcelona. His ban I think had more to do with him coming back and grabbing Busquets by the back of the neck and pushing him because to be honest his original foul, remember an open hand to Busquets' clavicle which got him holding his face in feigned agony, was not that bad a foul.

I am curious to see if Inter will also try and appeal Motta's supension but so far I have not seen any sign that they have.

It was two matches.

And yes, Inter doesn't appear to have appealed.

Ribery's ban was upheld so he will be out of Saturday's Champions League Final.

Hamit Altintop will get his chance in the spotlight instead.

Not unexpected to me but I do think that is a harsh penalty. To me Ribery's foul which got him sent off was more rash than bad intentioned.

A tough call for me as a Milan fan, part of me would like an Italian club to win the Champions league while another part of me does not want Inter winning another title. I do think this is a pretty evenly matched final and the fact both coaches know one another well, Mourinho once worked as an assistant to Van Gaal at Barcelona, also should add to the even balance to the game. But Ribery's absence is a major loss for Bayern even if Altintop did play well in the 2nd semifinal against Lyon. And isn't it ironic that the two Real Madrid castoffs, Sneijder and Robben are each a main reason why their clubs are playing the final at the Bernabeu?

I absolutely agree with you about Ribery's ban, 3 games for that foul is too extreme.

Saturday's final does look pretty even, Inter has the better defense but with Robben I would give Bayern the slight advantage offensively.

I wonder what all these stories about Mourinho possibly going to Real Madrid will do for Inter's morale? Typically Mourinho is a master at mind games but is this his ultimate mind game, taking the pressure off his players by placing all the focus on his post match departure?

That's the best justification I can give for this nonsense.

And it isn't that different from what he did with Porto (though that was much less high profile).

The one thing I will say is that there is no human being on the face of this earth who has earned the honour of hoisting the cup with the big ears more than Javier Zanetti.

That is for sure. Zanetti is pure class. Too bad for him first Pekerman and now Maradona have overlooked him for the last two World Cups. But the guy does not seem to get older, only better. A few seasons ago it looked like he was losing it as a fullback and thus Inter switched him to midfield but he has shown recentlyhe can still be a very effective fullback. Just ask Lionel Messi!

You may be right Sammy. Mourinho loves playing mind games but as was commented on just after the semifinals, this time I do not think he wants to go after Bayern Munich because he respects his mentor Van Gaal too much. Thus he is engaging in all of this media play about his future. Ordinarily you would think that would be destabilzing but Mourinho has this knack about him of deflecting attention away from the team and on to himself, some of it is probably ego driven but there also is plenty of cold calculation behind it.

He is crazy like a fox, our Mr. Mourinho.

I do not think I have read anybody saying a bad word about Javier Zanetti. There could be fewer players more deserving of lifting a Champions League trophy.

Edit; I guess ursus already said the same. Well it is a point worth repeating! Zanetti is class.

Agree about Zanetti. And yes Mourinho loves the mind games.

Reuters had a pretty decent preview of the Final with an analysis of what they view as each club's strength and weakness:

Analysis of Bayern Munich v Inter Milan final

They also have mini summaries of each of team's players:

Penpix of Inter Milan players

Penpix of Bayern Munich players

I am not sure I agree with all of Reuters conclusions, for example they talk of Gomez and Klose's current form shows Bayern lacks alternatives in attack. Au contraire I say, what other team can bring in players of Gomez' and Klose's quality off the bench? And they list Lucio, one of the world's best defenders as a weakness for Inter?

Seems like a pretty even matchup to me and with both coaches strategical masters, should be an intriguing tactical battle.

Zanetti handled Messi very well, I am curious to see how well he does against a different kind of winger, Arjen Robben.

Include me in the Javier Zanetti Appreciation Society, one of the classiest players I have ever seen. I read this final will be his 700th appearance for Inter!

700 appearances? An incredible accomplishment especially for someone like Zanetti who did not start his career there.

He will have his hands full though with Robben a different and more direct kind of player than Messi. Another interesting battle tomorrow night, should be Dutch teammates Wesley Sneijder and Mark van Bommel in midfield.

A nice article about Zanetti and his 700 appearances for Inter, he is only 58 short of Guiseppe Bergomi's club record.

http://sports.yahoo.com/soccer/news?slug=a...r-zanettis700th

But the amazing fact in this article and which backs up everybody's praise of what a class act he is,

Zanetti has never been sent off in his 699 games

An incredible statistic for a defender. Hopefully it also is not the kiss of death for him either!

DB, good point about the Sneijder-van Bommel Dutch midfield battle. Both van Bommel and Schweinsteiger and hard working physical midfielders who are very good at imposing themselves on a game.
