I think few people are believing Sneijder's ablity to play tomorrow night. I think Mourinho will again look to use Eto'o and Pandev on the wings to try and keep barcelona's wing backs occupied. That worked effectively for Inter against both Chelsea and the first leg vs Barcelona. Lyon have to open up and look for a goal so as Yogi wrote that makes Bayern, particularly Robben, very dangerous on the break. |

Per Reuters these are tonight's starting teams: Olympique Lyon: 1-Hugo Lloris; 13-Anthony Reveillere, 3-Cris, 4-Jean-Alain Boumsong, 20-Aly Cissokho; 41-Maxime Gonalons, 17-Jean Makoun; 14-Sidney Govou, 19-Cesar Delgado, 7-Michel Bastos; 9-Lisandro Lopez. Bayern Munich: 22-Hans Joerg-Butt; 21-Philipp Lahm, 5-Daniel Van Buyten, 28-Holger Badstuber, 26-Diego Contento; 10-Arjen Robben, 31-Bastian Schweinsteiger, 17-Mark van Bommel, 8-Hamit Altintop; 25-Thomas Mueller, 11-Ivica Olic So Cris and Van Buyten did make their respective starting teams but Demichelis does not. I think van Bommel's return is a huge boost for Bayern. |

Tuesday's second leg... . . . . . . . Olympique Lyonnais 0, Bayern Munich 3 (0-4 aggregate). Not much of a contest at Stade Gerland, as Bayern rides an Olic hat trick to the final. The Germans missed an easy chance after just two minutes, but finally took the lead close to the half-hour as Robben put through Muller, who found Olic, who controlled a tricky ball and flicked it past the defender and over Olic. In the second half, Lyon went to ten men after Cris was harshly booked for a tackle and then again for dissent. Butt did have to make his only good save moments later, but a short time after that Altintop put Olic through alone for his second goal. He got his third with ten minutes or so to go, neatly heading in a Lahm cross. Bayern didn't have to extend itself too much in these two matches, but the final is sure to be something else--especially if Ribery is suspended. That's supposed to be determined this week, I think. |

The Ribery hearing is tomorrow. I find it rather bizarre that it is taking place after this game has been played. |

There was only one team on the field tonight, complete control from Bayern from the opening whistle. I too think it strange that the decision on Ribery's suspension will be ehld after the second leg. personally I think the one game was enough but I am not so sure Bayern will really miss him if Altintop plays a she did tonight. he is not as quick or electric as Ribery and not as much of a threat of scoring but he works hard, has good technique is a solid passer. Olic will rightfully get the credit with three goals but Van Bommel and Schweinsteiger controlled the centre of the field very well. As for Lyon, it did not look like it was they and not Bayern who had the weekend off. Not much energy from Lyon tonight and once more they played scared. |

I hope this is not what we can expect this summer in the World Cup, Cris was sent off for sarcastically applauding the referee's decision to call a foul on him. I am not even certain it was a foul but Busacca the referee needs a little restraint in a high emotion game like this, talk to the guy first, if he continues it then maybe send him off. Bayern has pretty good depth when they can use Gomez and Klose as substitutes and when they have a player like Altintop to sub in for Ribery. |

With Inter fighting for championships on two fronts that is a gamble but probably one worth taking as without him Inter's midfield play likely will be nonexistant at Nou Camp. Mourinho well remembers Inter's 0-2 loss there last November in group play when Sneijder was missing. Has there been a team advancing to the Champions League semifinals who were as flat in both legs as Lyon were? Bayern easily dominated today's game and could have won by more than 3 goals. |

We've actually just been discussing this very issue over at When Saturday Comes, and the current consensus is that OL are the weakest side to make it this far since Monaco in 2004. Though Monaco of course did better in the semi-finals than OL. For a semi-final flop of this magnitude, I think you need to go back to Leeds United (0-3 on aggregate to Valencia) in 2000-01 or Ajax in 96-97 (2-6 to Juventus). Neither of those clubs, however, put up such a poor performance in their home leg. One can definitely make the argument that this is the worst semi-final performance since the creation of the Champions League. |

Monaco advanced to the final so I do not think you can claim they were a weak semifinalist. Like Lyon this year they also defeated Real Madrid on the way to the final but if I recall they also beat another "large" club that season before losing to Porto in the final. Lyon were I think fortunate to have been drawn in the 1/4 finals with a Bordeuax team in free fall. Lyon got as far as they did with solid defense and teamwork but in both legs against bayern they played very timidly and their lack of a player who could make a real impact (this is where they missed the departed benzema and Juninho) was obvious. I think they do have to rank as one of the poorest semifinalists in the Champions League. Just imagine what Florentino Perez must have bene thinking after Lyon's match tonight, 300+ million euros and we lost to THIS team!

Monaco 2004 won their group by a single point from Deportivo La Coruna and PSV, then beat Lokomotiv Moscow (on away goals) in the round of 16, Real Madrid in the quarters and Chelsea in the semis. That was Abramovich's first year at Chelsea, and I'm not sure that they were really a "big" club at the time (though I'm sure robdog will disagree). Here's the Monaco squad that was soundly beaten by Porto in the final: Roma, Ibarra, Rodriguez, Givet (71 Squillaci), Evra, Zikos, Cissè (63 Nonda), Bernardi, Giuly (23 Prso), Rothen, Morientes. Wow I remember that 2004 Final differently, Monaco were doing well untl their best player Guily went off injured, and if I recall correctly Morientes had a chance to put them in front, I just do not recall if he missed the opportunity or there was a poor call which prevented him from scoring but soon after Porto got a penalty and turned the game around. And 2004 may have been Abramovich's 1st year owning Chelsea but they were still a strong team and had the previous few seasons before then been gradually improving both doemstically and internationally. And did not Monaco that season in group play have a historic victory margin over a very good Deportivo team? Lyon may well be remembered for these two poor games in the semifinals but they had a very good tournament and finally broke through their previous barrier of the quarterfinals. And they did this with a less star studded team than previous Lyon teams. |

Lyon were poor but also credit Bayern for controlling the game. Schweinsteiger and Van Bommel were absolutely dominant and shut down Lyon's attacks with their own midfield play. Bayern have had some close calls in previous rounds but they give the impression of a club who are growing in confidence as this competition progresses. They will not be an easy opponent in the final whether Ribery is there or not. |

And talking of Ribery he's been banned for three games, which obviously includes the final and the first match next season. I think there's going to be an appeal, but these rarely turn the decision around, so it looks as if the Frenchman will be missing in action in Madrid. |
