Arsenal will also be missing Cesc Fabregas for leg 2. I thought Barcelona were guilty of what plagued Manchester United the night before, sitting on an away lead. Yes Walcott's entrance helped but Barcelona should be kicking themselves for letting this game get away. Still 2 away goals means Arsenal will need to win at the Nou Camp to advance. Puyol's sending off was harsh in my opinion, another reason why the International Board needs to relook at the automatic red card rule.

Great win for Lyon and Lloris was spectacular. Bordeaux did have their chances and I am guessing Chamakh will put some of thsoe away enxt week. Missing Lisandro Lopez will hurt Lyon so I do not think that tie is decided yet. Only losing by a goal gives CSKA Moscow a chance too so all 4 of next week's games should be fascinating and still are up in the air.

Word is Rooney will miss two to four weeks. Wednesday's first legs...
Arsenal 2, Barcelona 2;
Le Arse will be missing some key players for next week.

Don't forget that Gallas & Arshavin were hurt as well. Damn, two Champion's League match-day produces major injuries to Chelsea EPL title rivals. I guess I should welcome the competition a bit more ;)

I think Arshavin's injury was minor but Wenger thinks Gallas' calf injury could keep him out for the rest of the season but that he should be all right in time for the World Cup. But the real bad news for Arsenal is Cesc Fabregas may have broken his perone, I think that is the shin bone in English and if this injury is confirmed on Thursday then he not only will be out for the rest of the season but also may even be out of the World Cup. So not good news at all for Arsenal and yes robdog Chelsea appear to have been the big winners this week in England with potential season ending injuries to the top player from each of their title rivals.

Barcelona played a superb first hour against Arsenal and despite the Gunners late comeback, how can you really complain about a 2-2 away draw in London? What Guardiola may worry about though is that both Puyol and Pique will be suspended for the return leg.

Bad news for both Manchester United and Arsenal with those injuries but as a Spain fan I am particularly worried about Fabregas' injury and hope it does not imperil his World Cup. Barcelona were rolling in that game but probably did let up a bit and that is almost always a mistake on the road. Walcott was dangerous but when have you ever seen Arsenal with so little of the ball? That does not bode well for the return leg even with Pique and Puyol missing, the fact that Ibrahimovic is back scoring is good news for Barca's fans.

Like manzanares I too am concerned about Cesc Fabregas' injury and his chances of playing in the World Cup for Spain. I agree with nkono, the red card to Puyol was harsh but there is no question in my mind that it was a penalty. In fact I beleve Cesc' shin injury came from the foul and not the taking of the penalty.

Akinfeyev is a good goalkeeper and he did keep CSKA Moscow in the series, only a goal down they do have a chance against Inter next week. Now that would make Mourinho even more sour!

Before tonight's Bayern Munich-Manchester United matchup I found this "Where are they now" article on the players from each side from that memorable 1999 final between them:

http://sports.yahoo.com/soccer/news?slug=g...=goal&type=lgns

Oliver Kahn does some work on a Chinese reality show finding goalkeeping talent???!!!

Peter Schmeichel works on Disocvery Channel's European version of "Dirty Jobs!" while Teddy Sheringham is a poker player.

Great link, I really enjoyed reading that.

With a 2 goal advantage from leg 1 I would say Lyon are in a pretty good shape heading into the return legs. I would also include Barcelona, with a road draw and 2 away goals as being one of the best situated teams. The other two semifinal series look too close to call. But injuries and suspensions will play a key role in handicapping these matches.

That was an incredible first hour from Barcelona, to be honest I had forgotten they were playing in London, I was thinking it was at the Nou Camp because as somebody else already pointed out when have you seen Arsenal so completely dominated before? Almunia made some good saves in the first half and other than Ibra, Barcelona's finishing was not the best and that let Arsenal back into the game. Still I think if you told Guardiola before the game he would leave London with a 2-2 result he would be content. The big concern will be 3 normal defensive starters, the injured Abidal and the suspended Puyol and Pique will be missing. Maxwell has adequately filled in for Abidal while Milito and Marquez are experienced players and this will be their time to show their worth.

I heard today that in England they are reporting that Fabregas will be out 6 weeks, ruling him out for the rest of the league season but Manzanares and Merengue may be able to breath a little easier about his World Cup participation.

Arsenal are really looking like a hospitable ward now, Arshavin will also be out for 3 weeks joining Fabregas and Gallas who are each likely out for the season. Not good signs as they fight for the league and European crowns.

Strange game from Inter, they looked out of sorts for awhile yet still put CSKA under pressure until they were denied by Akinfeyev. Balotelli has resolved his differences with Mourinho today, let us see if that helps the team.

I'm never sure when to do this on forums, given that people post quickly, not necessarily in their native language, and also that the person pointing out the error will also make mistakes, but I'll take the plunge and suggest that Yogi meant "hospital" and not "hospitable", which has an altogether different and more positive meaning! But beyond the triviality of the small mistake, Yogi is correct...Arsenal will certainly miss those players, more, I think, than Barcelona will do theirs.

DOH! i can't believe I made that mistake, thank you Sporting for pointing it out. Yes it does change the meaning of what I wanted to say. I do not know how hospitable came out when I was thinking hospital, I guess the fingers were working faster than the brain!

Some bit of positive news for Arsenal is that Gallas' injury is not as serious as first thought and instead of missing the season he, like Arshavin, will only miss 3 weeks.

I am really disappointed to read of Cesc's injury. Puyol was not really intending to foul him just crowd him to make his shot more difficult, but awarding the penalty was I think the correct call. The red card was rigoristic. And Cesc's injury was an unintended consequence.

So both Spain and England fans will be sweating out the recoveries for Cesc and Rooney. Meanwhile Chelsea are smiling!

Here are some previews of Tuesday's two second leg quarterfinal games,

Barcelona vs Arsenal Preview

CSKA Moscow vs Inter Preview

In the La Liga discussion thread we have been debating some of Barcelona's defensive options with Pique and Puyol both suspended for this game. This preview lists another option which we did not come up with, Yaya Toure dropping back to play in central defense. If that does happen it will be damning proof against Rafael Marquez and his current form, or lack thereof.

CSKA Moscow has a plastic pitch and that has naturally attarcted some pregame discussion. But with Balotelli back in the coach's good graces (relatively speaking) and Lucio and Sneijder again available, Inter look well prepared for this 2nd leg.

So Iniesta will still be missing for Barcelona? Moving Toure back to defence gives Xavi, Busquets and Keita the role in midfield. Toure probably can do adequately enough in defence but mernegue is right it if he does play in the back it will be a real condemnation of Marquez' current form.

Should be an intriguing game tomorrow night, the way Arsenal came back last week, the speed factor involving Walcott and the absences of Ibrahimovic, Iniesta, Puyol and Pique make this game far from a formality for Barcelona.

I thnk Inter's complaints about Moscow's pitch are just hot air, other clubs have gone there and played without much trouble, modern technology makes those pitches much closer to real grass than ever before. What Inter should be thankful for is they will be playing in Moscow in April not February!

Iniesta may not start but he will be available against Arsenal. Meanwhile Alex Song will miss the game for Arsenal.

There are reports from England that Waybe Rooney is making a much quicker recovery from injury than expected but he did not train with the team today so I doubt if he will play tomorrow. Would returning too early risk further injury?

I agree with what was discussed in the Spain forum, Abidal is the type of defender who can do well against Arsenal's Walcott and he rather than Maxwell should play on the flank today for Barcelona. Should be an interesting game tonight. Inter will likely look to close up the back in Moscow and use Eto'o and Milito on the break and Sneijder's ability on set pieces as their keys to victory. Lucio's return should strengthen the backline too.
