Tuesday does have a couple of fascinating games, I always get the impression Celtic love playing English clubs in European competition so their matchup with Arsenal should be one worth following. My eyes of course are on tomorrow's game between Atletico Madrid and Panathinaikos n Greece. The Greek teama re coached by henk Ten Cate who should know Atletico from his days as Rijkaard's assistant at Barcelona. Their key players are Djibril Cisse, Gilberto Silva and Karagounis. I would like to see Atletico change their record of never having won before in Greece and with the full compliment of players available including new signings Sergio Asenjo and Juanito, I like how Atletico look coming into the new season. This should be a good test for them. |

Very true, here are the complete scores: Celtic 0 - 2 Arsenal FC Copenhagen 1 - 0 APOEL Nicosia FC Sheriff 0 - 2 Olympiakos Piraeus FC Timisoara 0 - 2 Stuttgart Sporting Lisbon 2 - 2 Fiorentina Some highlight real goals in Sporting's 2-2 draw with Fiorentina. The Viola went up with an early Juan Manuel Vargas goal, Sporting tied it through Simon Vukcevic who then stupidly took his shirt off in celebration when he already had a yellow! So off he went and down a man Sporting went in front with a long range goal by Miguel Veloso only for a great flick from Alberto Gilardino with 11 minutes left to tie it up. Sporting at least forced a draw down a man but giving up 2 away goals they'll need to go to Florence next week and win in order to advance. Arsenal beat Celtic in Glasgow with a pair of fortunate goals, the first when a Cesc Fabregas free kick deflected off William Gallas' back and the second when Celtic's Caldwell turned a cross into his own net. Yet for a good portion of the game Arsenal were the better team and they effectively shutdown Celtic's attack. Solid win for Stuttgart in Romania against Timisoara, a penalty followed quickly by a goal by Aleksandr Hleb was the difference in that match. Jens Lehmann, the Stuttgart goalie announced before the game that he will retire at the end of the season. |

I was reading that Brasilian brn forward Leidson of Sporting Lisboa, an ex Corinthians striker, is getting Portuguese citizenship and may be selected to play for Portugal. He is not a bad forward but needs to stay on his feet more, against Fiorentina he was looking to trick the official with play acting too much. And how stupid was Vukcevic taking his shirt off when he already had a yellow card? Sporting had the better of the play in my eyes but their stupidity and attempts at deception came back and hurt them in the end. And what a great goal by Gilardino to tie it! He chests it down and before it hits the ground, flicks it with the outside of his foot into the net! Great goal. |

Every year in the Champions League Arsenal show they are one of the best teams in Europe playing away from home and this match was no different. Excellent defending by Arsenal as they barely gave Celtic a sniff at goal. Offensively Arsenal moved the ball pretty well and while they may have been a bit fortunate with both goals, a deflection and an own goal, they were the product of Arsenal's overall better play on the night. I must say I am impressed with new signing Vermaelen and who needs Adebaypr's goals when you have Gallas? That's two goals in two matches so far this season for the centerback!
When will players ever learn? I did not see the match but saw the goals and as raconteur wrote three of them were highlight real goals, the only one which was just an average goal was the one Vukcevic scored and then got sent off for taking his shirt off! |

I saw the game and this is a pretty fair assessment of what happened. Some great goals and exciting overall play for such an early season match. Fiorentina's central defense was to me a little leaky but as Alexao noted, Leidson tried too much to trick the referee instead of playing. When he did he looked dangerous as did Sporting's playmaker Matias Fernandez but Fiorentina looked dangerous going forward and Jovetic's entrance for Mutu I thought helped the attack. And what can you say about Gilardino's goal? It was pure class. He didn't see much of the ball in this one but made the most of his opportunity and now the Viola are in good position going home for leg 2. |

Wednesday's scores where once again only 1 of the 5 home teams won: August 19 Levski Sofia 1 - 2 Debrecen Lyon 5 - 1 Anderlecht Panathinaikos 2 - 3 Atletico Madrid RB Salzburg 1 - 2 Maccabi Haifa Ventspils 0 - 3 Zurich But the home team which did win was Lyon who crushed Anderlecht 5-1 and were up 4-0 at the half. Good game in Athens between Panathinaikos and Atletico but inspired by Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero it was Atletico winning away. Zurich's 3 goal win in latvia should all but book their ticket to the group stage and Hungary's Debrecen and israel's Maccabi haifa probably did the same with their road wins too. |

An excellent result for Atletico in Greece. I thought Atleti looked dangerous almost everytime they went forward. Forlan was superb, as industrious as ever and of course he scored one and set up another of the goals. The third goal was all Aguero who stripped a defender of the ball and faked two defenders before beating the goalie to the far post. Asenjo played well in goal and Juanito was a good presence at the back. But both Heitinga and Lopez had some problems defensively which will need to be avided against better opposition. But a satisfying win against a competitive team on their home ground. A nice start to the new season. Lyon's win was excellent. 4 first half goals put Anderlecht away. Michel Bastos their new signing looks like a player to watch. |

Diego Forlan is one of those guys who gives it his all no matter what the circumstances and with a player such as he with that work rate plus who can both score and set up his teammates(his pass to Maxi Rodriguez for the first goal was superb) you get an extremely difficult player to defend. And his partner in attack Sergio Aguero has a similar work rate. Like manzanares I was impressed with the new goalie Sergio Asenjo too. Not only is he a good shot stopper but it looks like he distributes the ball quite well for a keeper. Michel Bastos was the best left winger in France last season while playing for Lille but yesterday Lyon used him on the right ala Lionel Messi which enabled him to cut inside and shoot with his left foot. Not only did he score a great goal but his passing was excellent. He looks like a great buy for Lyon as does Aly Cissokho who looks to have beaten out Fabio Grosso for the left back spot. Lyon have a lot of new faces but they are quick and moved the ball around well and Lisandro Lopez and Bafetimbi Gomis look like they will be a dangerous attacking duo. A great start for the new look Lyon. |

No surprises as the teams which held first leg advantages all won today to advance to the group stage: Levski Sofia 0-2 Debrecen (1-4 overall) Lyon 3-1 Anderlecht (8-2) Panathinaikos 0-2 Atletico Madrid (2-5) RB Salzburg 0-3 Maccabi Haifa (1-5) Ventspils 1-2 Zurich (1-5) Three goals for Lisandro Lopez who continues his great start to the new season in Lyon's win, an own goal and an individual effort by Sergio Aguero powered Atletico to their comofrtable win, while Debrecen of Hungary and FC Zurich qualify for the first time ever to the Champions League group play. I beleieve Maccabi Haifa made it once before, unless I am confusing them with Maccabi Tel Aviv. |

Wednesday's scores: APOEL Nicosia 3 - 1 FC Copenhagen (3-2 aggregate) Arsenal 3 - 1 Celtic (5-1) Fiorentina 1 - 1 Sporting Lisbon (3-3, Fiorentina advance on away goals) Olympiakos Piraeus 1 - 0 FC Sheriff (3-0) Stuttgart 0 - 0 FC Timisoara (2-0) Fiorentina and Sporting went down to away goals with Fiorentina triumphing. Joao Moutinho with a nice free kick goal for Sporting but they didn't trouble Fiorentina much after that and the Viola tied the game up when sub Jovetic took down a cross and beat the goalie to the near post. APOEL becomes the 2nd Cypriot club in 2 years to qualify for the group phase after coming from behind in leg 1 to knock out Copenhagen. Meanwhile Arsenal, Olympiakos and Stuttgart had little trouble holding on to their first leg victory margins. So we get Maccabi Haifa, Debrecen, FC Zurich and Apoel Nicosia as the four outsiders in this eyar's Champions League. Watch them get drawn with Barcelona, Manchester United, Chelsea and Inter Milan. |

We’ve got new CL rights holders this year and we’re getting the most random matches as the live game (generally the big name matches are being shown taped delayed in prime time). That being said, I thought the Apoel-FCK match was fantastic today. Great atmosphere, Apoel stormed out of the gates and were up 2-0 after 18 minutes. Copenhagen scored not long after to lead on away goals, but the Cypriots scored last in the first half to go up 3-1. Then in the Copenhagen threw all they had at them and couldn’t beat Greek keeper Dionisis Chiotis. I saw most of Fiorentina-Sporting, while it probably had more quality, it didn’t grab me the way the earlier match did. Stevan Jovetic, the 19yo Montenegrin, changed the game for Fiorentina when he came in and took his goal really well. Frey looked really shaky for Fiorentina and Mutu and Gillardino didn’t impress me a whole lot. I expected more from FIorentina. I also saw Debrecen's first leg and thought they weren't bad. I'd like to see them against better competition. Honduran midfielder Luis Ramos was effective for them. I'm little surprised he's not figuring for them right now. I suppose it's tough to get a look in behind Hendry Thomas and Wilson Palacios. cheers, hobbes |

Here's the draw today for the group stage. It looks good for England's clubs and not as good for Spain and Italy's--Barca is drawn with Inter and Real is drawn with Milan! Group A Bayern Munich (Germany) Juventus (Italy) Bordeaux (France) Maccabi Haifa (Israel) Group B Manchester United (England) CSKA Moscow (Russia) Besiktas (Turkey) Wolfsburg (Germany) Group C AC Milan (Italy) Real Madrid (Spain) Marseille (France) FC Zurich (Switzerland) Group D Chelsea (England) FC Porto (Portugal) Atletico Madrid (Spain) APOEL Nicosia (Cyprus) Group E Liverpool (England) Lyon (France) Fiorentina (Italy) Debreceni (Hungary) Group F Barcelona (Spain) Inter Milan (Italy) Dynamo Kiev (Ukraine) Rubin Kazan (Russia) Group G Sevilla (Spain) Rangers (Scotland) Stuttgart (Germany) Unirea (Romania) Group H Arsenal (England) AZ Alkmaar (Netherlands) Olympiakos (Greece) Standard Liege (Belgium) |

Wow, those Barcelona-Inter and Real Madrid-Milan matchups will be sensational. But both Madrid and Milan will have to be wary of Marseille who although they don't have a good recent record in the Champions, are not a team to look past. Speaking of good matchups how about Bayern-Juventus with Bordeaux added in as a wild card in that group? Atletico Madrid got a tough draw with Chelsea and Porto, it will be a chance to possibly get some revenge for Porto eliminating Atletico on away goals in last year's Champions League. Tough group and by far the toughest draw for any English club. As Winslow notes the remining English clubs got very favouable draws. So did Sevilla. |
