Inter played pretty well and Lucio had a monumental game but I can't help thinking they will regret not beating Chelsea by more than a goal. |

That may indeed be true Sammy but you also have to think Samuel Eto'o won't have as poor a game as he had last night. Or if he does, Pandev will come in for him sooner. Lucio did play extremely well, it is not often when Drogba runs up against a central defender who is as big, fast and strong as he, plus knows all of Drogba's own tricks about going down under minimal contact!

Ironic that Mark Gonzalez, an ex Betis player scored a cracking long range goal to give CSKA Moscow a tie with Sevilla! I think every 2nd leg matchup is still going to be competitive, except for Manchester United-Milan. It is really hard to see Man United losing at home by two goals. |

Ha, yeah I noticed it wasn't taking much to knock Lucio down! It was an entertaining game. I don't think Chelsea played anywhere near as well as they can, as some of their passing was a bit sloppy and they didn't use the flanks very well. They're clearly missing Ashley Cole, and they'll have to do without him for a while yet. Of course, their back-up Yuri Zhirkov is also injured and so they had to press Malouda into service as a makeshift left-back. I thought he did well enough, even when Balotelli was brought on to play directly against him. Lampard's been out of action with a viral infection this last week. It didn't look to me like he's properly over it yet, his energy levels were very low in the last half hour and normally he's one of the fittest players around. It's set up nicely for the second leg. Chelsea have been far stronger at home than away this season and I reckon they're likely to get the job done at Stamford Bridge, but it's far from certain. No-one likes to be playing a top Italian team who only need a draw! By the way, the game was well-refereed for the most part but it looked to me like Kalou should have had a penalty when he got through at the end of the first half. He was just about to pull the trigger when Samuel tripped him. I reckon the ref didn't fancy giving a pen and a mandatory red card. I was personally happy enough with the decision as I was enjoying the game and didn't want to see it disfigured by a penalty and sending off, but still... |

I think Kalou's dramatic fall is what convinced the ref not to call the foul. Plus from the ref's position on the play (behind it) it did not look like a foul. In fact it took me about 3 or 4 different angles before finally seing there was some contact. In my book when it takes several different angles to see a foul, a ref not blowing that is not comitting an atrocity. Lucio was fantastic in the game, he has always been one of my favorite defenders to watch, and probably the best dribbling central defender of recent years. And yes he did beat Drogba at his own game of dropping on light contact! Should be a fun second leg. Simon, or anyone else, what does Ancelotti have against Joe Cole? That game was calling for somebody on Chelsea's team with some playmaking ability but Cole stayed rooted to the bench. Must have been sweet for Betis fans to see one of their old boys denying Sevilla a road win! |

Leg two between Chelsea and Inter should be a good one. Too tough to call, yes Chelsea are at home where they are practically unbeatable but Inter are a team who know how to play on the road and with the way they defended on Wednesday they will not be easy to break down. And is there a goalie anywhere in the world playing better now than Julio Cesar? I do not think so. Good point about Joe Cole, to me a very underrated and apparently underappreciated player at his club. |

I agree about the '3 or 4 replays' standard for judging refereeing decisions, although I have to say my instant reaction was 'penalty' on the Kalou trip, especially as he was literally just about to shoot from three yards out! Good point about Joe Cole. He's been struggling for form and fitness all season and he's still looked rusty when I've seen him recently. I'd still have thought it was worthwhile bringing him on though. I also think Julio Cesar is a very talented keeper but he was a bit dodgy on the Kalou goal IMO. We can see about his black eyes, but I wondered if his movement was also affected by his crash, as he seemed unable to get down very quickly to that shot? |

Maybe Julio Cesar was a little stiff following his automobile accident and I too thought he probably could have done better on that shot by Kalou but I do think that for the past year Julio Cesar has been better than either Iker Casillas or Gianluigi Buffon. |

Champions League 2nd leg games this week, with 1st leg score in parentheses, Tuesday Arsenal-Porto (1-2) Fiorentina-Bayern (1-2) Wednesday Manchester United-Milan (3-2) Real Madrid-Lyon [0-1] Every home team but Man United face a 1st leg deficit but each are only down a goal which leaves these matches hanging on the edge. Arsenal and Fiorentina lost 3 weeks ago due to errors, Arsenal's own and in Fiorentina's case, the non call on Klose's game winning goal scored from an offside position. But snow is expected in Florence for tonight's match and I get the feeling Bayern will better be able to adapt to the frigid conditions. Fiorentina have not had much luck recently, perhaps now it is time that changes? The recent history of the Champions League is filled with clubs doing poorly in their domestic league putting those woes aside for the Champions League. I wonder if Porto will play Hulk despite his domestic league suspension? That means he has not played a competitive match since the first leg 3 weeks ago. If nothing else he should be well rested then! |

The Viola have literally nothing to lose, snow or no snow. That said, I am not particularly optimistic, as the only kind of luck the team has had all season has been bad. The Portuguese press is absolutely certain that Hulk will start for Porto. It will be interesting to see how Arsenal perform without Fabregas. |

ursus do you think Fiorentina's poor spell is due to Mutu's absence through suspension? Seems to me that ever since he was suspended was when the Viola started playing poorly. Needless to say early goals in both tonight's games could be decisive. Should set up a tense and dramatic night of football. |

Mutu's absence surely hasn't helped, but I think it goes beyond that (in part because Mutu wasn't uniformly brilliant when he was in the side) The squad just isn't deep enough to compete on all fronts, and finds it difficult to both score and defend successfully against quality opposition. They also have had absolutely miserable luck with refereeing decisions. |

Arsenal handled Porto pretty easily last year in group play I believe it was but without Fabregas, tonight could be a different story. Let us see if Nasri or Arshavin, not exactly direct replacements for Fabregas, can pick up some of the creative load he usually carries for the team. |

Tuesday's results (aggregate scores in parentheses) Arsenal 5-0 Porto (6-2 overall) Fiorentina 3-2 Bayern (4-4 overall, Bayern advance on away goals) Merengue you got your answer re Nasri, who scored an incredible goal dribbling through 3 Porto defenders. I wished I had seen Fiorentina-Bayern, sound slike a great game. ursus we feel for you, sounds like a tough way for Fiorentina to go out. Has there been a club with less luck this season than Fiorentina? |

Looks like they did that well enough, as Arsenal just went one better than last season's result, winning 5-0 at home to Porto. Nicklas Bendtner registered various contenders for 'miss of the season' at the weekend as Arsenal beat Burnley, but he bounced back with a hat-trick tonight. When Arsenal play like that they will score multiple goals against anyone, though there were sporadic occasions when Porto had sniffs of goal themselves. But no doubting the result, in fact it could be argued that the man of the match was Porto keeper Helton, without whom it really could have been nine or ten-nil to Arsenal. Arsenal really are hitting top form at just the right time of the season. Who knows what they can do between now and May? Sounds like an exciting game in Florence as well, as Fiorentina beat Bayern Munich 3-2 on the night, but exited on the away goals rule after the 4-4 aggregate draw. I didn't see that one so I'll leave others to fill in the details. |
