Zurich may be in last place in their group but they are not an easy team to beat. This is not Debrecen who look out of their depth in the Champions League, Zurich snatched a win against Milan in round 2 of group play and have played Real Madrid pretty closely both home and away. So I do not think Milan winning there is a certainty. Thus Marseile may still have a chance to qualify even if they do not defeat Madrid by 3 goals. Any sort of Marseille win may be sufficient if Milan does not win in Switzerland. Bordeaux are continuing to show they are no casual team. They comprehensively defeated Juventus and did so by taking Diego, Del Piero and Amauri out of the game with tight marking. |

I watched Juve's 2-0 loss at Bordeaux and Bordeaux outplayed them. They controlled midfield and used both of their fullbacks to put pressure n Juventus' defense. Disappointing games from both Diego and Felipe Melo but Juve still controls it's fate and all it needs is a home draw against Bayern to advance. But I am starting to get a little worried about Diego's play, ever since he missed some time due to injury a month and a half ago, he has not been the same player. Juve needs him to be active and creative in central midfield. |

Last week of group matches in the CL. United have a horrible defensive injury crisis right now, as I mentioned over in the Premier League forum. Vidic didn't make it, so the squad that the club have taken over to Germany contains just two defenders, Patrice Evra and the teenaged Oliver Gill (son of United CEO David Gill) who has yet to make his United debut. I'll give young Oliver the benefit of the doubt, despite the fact that I loathe his old man! In fact, United don't seem too fussed about trying to win the group, as besides the defensive casualties we've also decided to travel with a bunch of kids but with no Rooney, Berbatov, Giggs etc, who are fit. Looks like the focus is very much on Aston Villa on Saturday. I doubt they'd just throw Gill in for his debut in such circumstances, up against Dzeko and Grafite, so expect to see a back four made up of Evra and 3 midfielders. If Wolfsburg are on their game this could be absolute carnage The travelling squad: Ben Foster, Gabriel Obertan, Magnus Eikrem, Paul Scholes, Darron Gibson, Antonio Valencia, Oliver Gill, Michael Carrick, Matty James, Michael Owen, Darren Fletcher, Danny Welbeck, Ji-sung Park, Anderson, Patrice Evra, Cameron Stewart, Tomasz Kuszczak, Nani, Oliver Norwood. Still, should hopefully be a good trip. |

Oh that is right, you are headed to the game aren't you Simon? Look forward to reading your account and whether you were able to pick up a good deal on a VW! Tonight's full schedule of games, 20:45 Maccabi Haifa v Girondins de Burdeaux 20:45 Juventus v Bayern 20:45 Wolfsburg v Manchester United 20:45 Besiktas v CSKA Moscow 20:45 FC Zürich v Milan 20:45 O. Marsella v Real Madrid 20:45 Atlético Madrid v Oporto 20:45 Chelsea v APOEL Nicosia Bayern must win at Juventus in order to qualify. Still no Ribery but Robben and van Buyten will make the trip for a Bayern team who are slowly starting to put things together, they are on a winning streak which has seen them climb to 3rd in the Bundesliga. Lots of possibilities involving Madrid, Milan and Marseille. Marseille are the team needing lots of help to qualify, they must defeat Real Madrid by 3 goals in order to eliminate Madrid. Marseille can also qualify with any victory margin over Madrid combined with a Milan loss or tie with Zurich. As between Madrid and Milan and who would win the group, if they each win Madrid finishes first but Milan would top the standings if they win and Madrid either ties or loses. Manchester United are of course already qualified and will win the group if they tie at Wolfsburg. As for the 2nd qualifier out of the group, Wolfsburg can join Manchester United in the knockout round if their result at home to the English champions is better than what CSKA Moscow achieve at Besiktas. In the final group tonight Chelsea and porto have already determiend they will finish 1-2, all that is at stake is whether APOEL or Atletico madrid finish 3rd and go to the Europa League. Atletico will grab that spot if they match or better APOEL's result tonight. |

Tuesday's scores... . . . . . . Group A: Juventus 1, Bayern Munich 4; Maccabi Haifa 0, Bordeaux 1. Group B: Besiktas 1, CSKA Moscow 2; Wolfsburg 1, Man United 3. Group C: FC Zurich 1, AC Milan 1; Marseille 1, Real Madrid 3. Group D: Chelsea 2, APOEL Nicosia 2; Atletico Madrid 0, Porto 3. A pretty good night to be traveling, wouldn't you say? The big story comes from Turin, where I Gobbi (who actually scored first) are Europe League-bound along with CSKA, Marseille, and APOEL. Milan advanced to the knockout rounds after a late tying goal, while Atletico is out for the year after another miserable performance. I spent the afternoon bouncing between Marseille-Real and Wolfsburg-Man U, which was a plodder until Nani's cross found Owen's head just before halftime. Even with an injury list as long as Edwin van der Sar's arm, Sir Alex can still put quality on the field. In the second half, a Dzeko header tied the score before Owen tallied again, tapping in a cross after a fine mazy run in the box by Obertan. Late in the match, Owen finished his hat trick on a breakaway, moments after a Wolfsburger whiffed on a tap-in that would have gotten the Germans a point (which wouldn't have done any good, thanks to CSKA's Turkish win). Meanwhile, C. Ronaldo nailed a 30-yard free kick in the fifth minute to put Real ahead at Stade Velodrome, but a few minutes later Albiol's botched clearance fell to Lucho, who promptly tied the score. Albiol made up for it after halftime by latching onto a loose corner kick and putting the ball just inside the near post. After a penalty by Lucho hit the crossbar (Casillas took down an attacker after strangly wandering toward a non-threatening ball), Ronaldo added insurance with ten minutes to go--a pileup at the top of the box left the goal wide-open and he was first to reach the ball. |

The Juve result is another blow to Serie A's international reputation. La Gazzetta was almost as upset about Milan, who they described as "unwatchable". Will Inter be able to save face tomorrow? |

Actually CSKA Moscow qualified for the 2nd round of the Champions, it will be Wolfsburg getting "relegated" to the Europa League. And despite APOEL Nicosia being equal on points and with a much superior goal differential than Atletico Madrid it will be Atletico by having a better head to head record with APOEL who will get the Europa League spot from their group, APOEL's European season comes to an end. Hardly deserving though for Atletico who went down 0-3 to Porto at the Vicente Calderon. A masterful display today from Cristiano Ronaldo, besides the 2 goals for Madrid he drove the team forward throughout the game. But Marseille still had a chance at 1-2 down especially after Casillas dumb penalty but Lucho Gonzalez struck the cross bar. With that miss, Marseille's momentum went away. What a triumph for Bayern Munich. Merengue wrote pre match about how they are improving. Winning 4-1 at Juventus confirms that as Bayern are this tournament's escape artist, up to now. |

It is Fiorentina carrying Serie A's banner in the Champions League. I was shocked by how poor Juve played against bayern. AlthoughTrezeguet put them in the first half lead, his goal was against the run of play. A penalty for bayern was then converted by their goalie Hans Jorg Butt and then in the 2nd half Bayern put the game away, Olic made it 2-1 and that held up until the final 7 minutes when Gomes and Tymaschuk added further goals. A completely deserved win for Bayern who controlled midfield as Schweinsteiger in particular played very well. Diego's recent slump continued for Juve and he was jeered off the field by his own fans. Milan were saved by Ronaldinho's penalty and Madrid's win over Marseille. Curiously Zurich gave Milan a more difficult time in both matches than did either Real Madrid or Marseille. And an inglorious record for Maccabi Haifa, not only did they lose all 6 games played but failed to score a goal in any of those games! Wednesday Rubin Kazan, Dynamo Kyiv and Unirea Urziceni all aim to join CSKA Mlscow as eastern European clubs qualifying for the 2nd round. |

Bayern really did take it to Juventus last night and raconteur i think is right to emphasise the role Schweinsteiger played in their win. He was everywhere in midfield. And with Ribeyr and Robben still out (although Robben is currently a part time player a she seeks full fitness) van Gaal has obtained success using Ivica Olic running off of Mario Gomez. I felt badly for APOEL Nicosia missing out on the Europa League, any team which can go to Stamford Bridge, even against a weakened and already qualified Chelsea, and obtain a result there is a pretty decent side. APOEL finished with a better goal differential than Atletico Madrid when tied on points with them but as explained here lost out on the head to head results versus Atletico. Too bad as APOEL right now looks the more deserving club. Looking forward to tonight's Dynamo Kyiv-Barcelona and Inter-Rubin Kazan matches. |

Talk about an immediate impact from a coaching change. Stuttgart score 3 in their first 11 minutes under Christian Gross; they must really have wanted Babbel gone. |

Wednesday's results: Liverpool 1 - 2 Fiorentina O. Lyon 4 - 0 Debrecen Dynamo Kyiv 1 - 2 FC Barcelona Inter 2 - 0 Rubin Kazan Sevilla 1 - 0 Rangers Stuttgart 3 - 1 Unirea Urziceni Olympiakos 1 - 0 Arsenal Standard Liege 1 - 1 AZ Alkmaar It began well for Dynamo Kyiv as Milevski got his head on to a Shevchenko free kick and the ball then squirmed through Victor Valdes' body just 2 minutes into the game. But thereafter it was all Barcelona, I never saw the final possession statistics but at the half it was an amazing 78-22% in favor of Barcelona! The equalizer came when Messi opened play out wide on the left and Abidal's low cross was knocked in by Xavi. Kyiv defended well but had no midfield play and to me Shevchenko really looked liek a shell of his former self. It took Barca time but a Messi free kick eventually won it for them after 86 minutes. Inter joins them in advancing as Eto'o and Balotelli got their goals to defeat Rubin. Balotelli back heeled a ball for Eto'o to score than notched his own goal via a free kick. Until Messi's late game winner, Kyiv were looking like they'd finish 3rd but with the loss, Kyiv drops to 4th and Rubin Kazan enter the Europa League. Elsewhere Juan Vargas cross was knocked in by Alberto Gilardino to give Fiorentina a win over Liverpool. As ursus noted Stuttgart struck early and won easily in their new coach's first game. The victory enabled Stuttgart to leap over Unirea and finish 2nd in the group behind Sevilla who beat Rangers in a pretty meaningless match. And finally Olympiakos became the 2nd place finishers in their group with a win over Arsenal's youngsters. Standard Liege will head to the Europa League as their goalie scored on a header in injury time to pull off a 1-1 tie with AZ. So these then are the qualifiers for the 2nd round: Barcelona AC Milan Arsenal Bayern Munich Chelsea CSKA Moscow Fiorentina Girondins Bordeaux Inter Milan Manchester United Olympiakos Piraeus Olympique Lyon Porto Real Madrid Sevilla VfB Stuttgart |

We missed Winslow's kick start to the night's play! A fine game by Mario Balotelli, as Merengue wrote, he set up Eto'o and then scored his own goal with a nice free kick. Of course he had other opportunities to score too but squandered them. Still it was a good match for the teenager. With Inter and AC Milan finishing 2nd in their groups it was left to Fiorentina to win theirs. yet they only did that with Gilardino's late game winner. Apparently Aquilani made a rare appearance for Liverpool and he'll get more chances now in the Europa League. Messi was very active for Barcelona. I give Kyiv credit for defending well and considering the climate and this being the 2nd week in December, the field looked in pretty good condition. Messi looked even more mobile in this game than usual as he played a free role and was not simply playing as a right sided attacker. Barcelona are a patient team and knew eventually their passing and movement would lead to goals against Kyiv's packed in defense. It was not Borat but Bolat the Standard Liege goalie who scored on a header! Reminded me of a goal Peter Schmeichel scored for Manchester United sometime in the 1990s. |

Like most teenagers, Balotelli has up and down games but he sure does have plenty of talent. Mourinho is I think handeling him correctly, he knows he has talent but tries and keep Balotelli's feet on the ground. He knows Balotelli is not a humble guy like Lio Messi was when he first came up and that Balotelli sometimes needs to be reminded he is not God's gift to football! The group winners are: Barcelona Arsenal Chelsea Fiorentina Girondins Bordeaux Manchester United Real Madrid Sevilla And the runnersup: AC Milan Bayern Munich CSKA Moscow Inter Milan Olympiakos Piraeus Olympique Lyon Porto VfB Stuttgart The two Milan clubs and Bayern Munich are going to be the clubs most group winners will want to avoid. |
