Wow Ganso is hurt again, this time a thigh injury, and surprise (not!) he may be out for the rest of the tourney. Good thing Oscar has developed to the point where he is now a superior player to the unreliable Ganso. I too would not be surprised to see Danilo play tomorrow against Honduras in place of Romulo. I like what Danilo adds to the team, he is a better midfielder than right back in my eyes. So far so good for Brasil, I like what I see but now is when we find out what this team can do in the knockout stages. This is when the competition truly begins. |

With the women getting eliminated tonight, Great Britian's football hopes now rest on Stuart Pearce! South Korea are combative and will run a lot but I think GB can win this match, GB should win this match, they are at home. Bellamy and Sturridge are providing the goals, Cleverley and either Ramsey or Allen the work in midfield. Butland is making a name for himself in goal. Too bad he is a Brummie! |

Mexico-Senegal Japan-Egypt Brazil-Honduras Great Britain-South Korea I'm definitely going to be supporting Mexico, but I'm worried that they will struggle to deal with the pace of Senegal. Still, Mexico can win this match. Japan has to be the favorite, but Egypt can break down good defenses. This is the most interesting match-up of the four for me. The Brazilian men are not the women. Honduras had a good run. GB will have the weight and the support of the kingdom on their backs. Korea will be tough and have more of the play than many suspect. I think GB has the quality with Giggs and Bellamy to snatch a winner to put them through. |

Like I suggested in the women's thread, Team GB needs to be able to handle the pressure and expectations put on the host nation. |

Mexico 4-2 Senegal (aet) Japan 3-0 Egypt Brazil 3-2 Honduras Great Britain 1-1 South Korea (Korea wins 5-4 on pks) An exhilirating day of futbol with all but Japan's win over Egypt being close. Japan scored early against Egypt then had a man advantage for all the 2nd half which they eventually took advanatge of with two more goals in the game's final 15 minutes. An impressive win for a Japanese team which has yet to concede a goal in any of their 4 games in the Olympics! Mexico were up next and they won an exciting game with Senegal thanks to their ball movement and some defensive errors by Senegal. Mexico were 1-0 up on a nice 1st half header by Jorge Enriquez, and they made it 2-0 after an hour and looked set to win easily. But Senegal, playing very direct football tied it up on 2 headers and sent the game into extra time. There Mexico settled down, passed the ball around well but it was 2 errors by Senegalese defenders which resulted in both Mexican goals in extra time. Honduras went out to Brasil but won a lot of friends with their energetic play. They took the lead on Brasil with a Mario Martinez volley, then had right back Crisanto sent off for 2 yellows. Brasil came back and tied it with a goal by Leandro Damiao before the half but 10 man Honduras retook the lead with a goal by the increasingly impressive Roger Espinoza. A penalty by Neymar anda 2nd goal by Leandro damiao gave Brasil the win but Honduras who had Espinoza sent off very late for a 2nd yellow (he left to a standing ovation from the crowd) really played well and gave Brasil all they could handle. In the final game Korea took the lead on Great Britain with a powerful shot from outside the box. Aaron Ramsey tied it with a PK but had a later PK saved by Korea's keeper who later had to leave the match with a shoulder injury. I thought Korea had slightly the better of play but the 120 minutes ended 1-1 and in Pks, everyone converted but GB's Sturridge, who stutter stepped and had his shot saved. Korea advanced and the hosts were eliminated. The semis on Tuesday: Japan-Mexico Brasil-Korea A pair of Asia-Latin America matchups. I'm thinking both Japan and Brasil are thankful their opponents had to play 120 minutes today. |

I don't want to take anything away from Mexico, but I thought Senegal handed them all four goals -- glaringly so on the last two. This is the first time Mexico and Japan have made it to the semis since the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. Japan had absolutely no soccer pedigree at that time. They've come a long way. Can't wait to get Espinoza back in a Sporting KC uniform. SKC faces Seattle in the US Open Cup final Wednesday. I'd think he'd be able to play -- the kid has an incredible motor -- though maybe not a full 90. |

Espinoza and Honduras were superb and they made Brazil really earn that victory. I wish Crisanto had not been sent off, it was silly as he received 2 deserved yellows within about a minute but even with 10 they pushed Brazil. Some questions over Brazil's defence as they know play for a medal. As for Great Britain, well we all know British teams just can not convert in penalty shootouts so once it went there few were expecting victory. Korea ran like crazy and had some pretty good skill and they did take the play to GB for most of the match. Giggs sat out the last group game and only came on late as a sub yesterday, anybody know why? While there is some disappointment in this elimination, I think most Britsh football fans are probably ready to see the end of Team GB. Back to our parochialism and our own independent federations! Japan has for me been the most impressive team in this competition, beware of them in the semifinals and beyond. |

Brazil's defense is vulnerable, if Korea defends as they have throughout the tournament, they have a legitimate chance at pulling off the upset. And Japan can defeat Mexico as Japan just does not seem to make mistakes. |

Thanks for the great summary and updates gents! Family duties forced me to miss these matches with no chance to see replays other than highlights. But I won't miss these semis, they should both be barn burners! |

FWIW Japan did defeat Mexico a week before the Olympics started in a tourney warm up. xeneize is I think spot on in saying Japan just doesn't make many mistakes. They also are an extremely skillful bunch. You don't see many teams other than Brazil, Argentina or Spain keep the ball more than Mexico but Japan did in that pre tourney warm up. Should be a fascinating game tomorrow, Mexico did have trouble with Senegal's directness but Japan are more of a passing team. This Mexican team know how to win games, they are very tough mentally, have a solid defense, a good keeper and explosiveness in attack. Korea don't make many mistakes either but you do wonder about their finishing even against a suspect Brazil defense. Note Brazil dropped Neto in goal and are now playing Gabriel, the goalie on their 2011 U20 championship winning team. Normal starter Rafael (injured) is missed. Korea are tough to break down but I find it hard to imagine they'll be able to shutdown Neymar, Hulk, Damiao and Oscar. Brazil should win this game and advance to their first Olympics final since a team led by Romario lost to the USSR in 1988. |

Mexico did it! A 3-1 win over Japan in a semifinal which was closer than that score indicated. It was a back and forth game which turned when peralta robbed a Japanese defende rof a ball then scored a nice goal to make it 2-1 midway through the 2nd haf. A late 3rd goal while Japan were presisng forward sealed the deal. Mexico have won two U17 World Cups since 2005 and were semifinalists in the last U20 tournament, this is a great generation of players they are developing. |

Semifinal results Mexico 3x1 Japan Brasil 3x0 South Korea So it will be a Mexico x Brasil final, an all Latin American final for the 2nd time in the last 3 Olympics, 2004 was Argentina x Paraguay while 2008 was Argentina x Nigeria. Mexico with a good win over Japan after Japan had scored early. Mexico then began to impose themselves on the game as it was Japan, not Mexico who played 120 minutes in the quarterfinals, who looked the more tired team. Fabian's header off a corner kick gave Mexico life, Peralta's finely placed shot after pressure forced a Japan mistake put Mexico in front and Cortes sealed the win with a late 3rd goal. Mexico look confident coming into the final. But so do Brasil after they cruised past Korea 3x0. Romulo's near post shot beat the Korean keeper after some nice buildup work to open the scoring. Then in the 2nd half more nice passing carved up Korea's backline and Leandro Damiao scored 2 goals to give Brasil the win and make him the competition's top scorer with 6. When it was still 1x0 Brasil, Korea could have had a penalty for a foul by Sandro inside the area but it took several replays to confirm he got man not ball, so it is hard to comlain too much about that, particularly when Brasil were so dominant throughout. Now on to the final, should be an interesting game, Mexico often gives Brasil a good match and Mano Menezes team will have to be on their game to take that much sought after gold medal but if Brasil play as they did today they should do that. |

Congrats to our Mexican and Brasilian posters here for their teams advancing to the final. Deserved wins for them both as they each overcame slow starts to eventually impose themselves on their opponents. But I think the non call on what looked like a penalty by Sandro did effect Korea. They get that PK and convert it and it becomes 1-1. Still I think Brasil would have gone on to win it, they passed well and broke down the disciplined Korean defense. Interesting how Hulk was dropped from the starting team and another midfielder was added. I'd expect the same in the final against Mexico's slick passers. Mexico and Brasil have developed a pretty good rivalry over the years and Mexico is one of the few countries which has a good record against Brasil in the past 5-6 years. Giovani Dos Santos hurt his leg and left at halftime but he was not missed that much as his departure allowed Marco Fabian to return to where he most feels comfortable, playing behind the striker. It is going to be an interesting final and while Brasil will be favored, Mexico has a pretty good chance of beating them as their attack can be effective against the sometimes iffy Brasilian defense. |

Please, please enough with the man crushes of the announcers on anything Brazilian. Having said that, it was interesting to hear Kyle Martino state that Brazil would fear Japan more than Mexico. Of course, that is a moot point now, but such is the perception of Japanese football these days. This should be an entertaining match. |

Not sure why Martino would say that as Mexico has a pretty good record recently against Brazil, as was pointed out above. In fact Mexico's full national team just beat this Brazilian Olympic team in June in Dallas. I think only Giovani, Corona and Peralta of the Olympic team played in that match for El Tri but Brazil knows very well that Mexico is capable of beating them. |
