I'd be interested to see the stats splitting the European Cup from the UEFA Cup and the old ECWC - I've heard it before but from memory I think things are pretty much neck and neck between England, Italy and Spain in the European Cup. There are interesting shades of grey as well, for example the prime period of English success was abruptly interrupted by the 5 year ban after Heysel, although on the other hand England would often have stronger teams in the ECWC as the FA Cup is a bigger deal to the English than the cup competition is in most other countries. The evidence is that money talks. It's hard to see how another league could currently challenge the hegemony of the big three leagues, but at least we can talk of a 'big three'. In financial terms, Italy was head and shoulders above every other league in the late-80s / early-to-mid 90s and that was reflected not just in their fine record in the CL but particularly through their dominance of the UEFA Cup in that period. |
