And the Dutch still have Nasazzi's Baton, which means that Spain must content itself with that lump of gold that Blatter is so fond of . . .

I had to look up Nasazzi's Baton,

Nasazzi's Baton

Quote:

named after Jose Nasazzi, captain of the Uruguay team that won the first official World Championship. The Baton changes hands when the holders are defeated in a match regarded by FIFA and both participating teams as a full international. Drawn matches in knock-out tournaments that are decided by extra time, penalty kicks, golden goals, silver goals, corner kicks, tossing a coin or drawing lots are regarded as drawn matches - the Baton does not change hands

I do not get the point of this baton, a game like the World Cup Final whch went to extra time resulted in a winner and that should have passed it on to Spain.

Of course in the end it is all meaningless, what counted was what took place at Soccer City in Johanessburg last July 11 and that is Spain are world champions!

I just had to put this down,

Argentina 4-1 Spain

The unofficial world title is in new hands tonight! :D

And it is now with Japan after their win last week over Argentina.

And it is still Japan after they played Korea to a draw yesterday.

Japan have gone unbeaten since defeating Argentina last fall, including all of their games in the Asian Nations Cup, so they still are the "unofficial world champs." ;)

It took over a year but Japan have finally been defeated and dethroned as "unofficial world champions" by...North Korea!

Japan had already qualified for the next round of Asian World Cup qualifying while North Korea had been eliminated so nothing but pride was at stake [other than this 'unofficial world championship!' ;) ]

So Kim Il Jung has finally achieved what he has wanted, North Korea are on top of the world! Unofficially. :D

With North Korea eliminated from World Cup qualifying and that nation's notorious isolation, it could be sometime before they play again. The "unofficial world title" may not be on the line for some time to come!

According to the Unofficial Football World Champions' website North Korea still has a qualifying game next February against Tajikistan. But as they are the weakest team in their qualifying group, there is a good chance North Korea can hold on to their title.

Japan held on to the unofficial title for 16 games from October 2010 till yesterday, per the website, Of those 16 matches, Japan won 11 and drew 5, scoring 33 goals along the way. In terms of longevity, it doesn’t quite match the Netherlands’ recent record-breaking run of 21 matches as champions from November 2008 to July 2010, but it’s still a very impressive reign.

North Korea have been busy and still retain the "unofficial" world title. In fact after World Cup qualifying ended, North korea participated in and won the Asian Challenge Cup, with these scores:

Tajikistan 1-2 North Korea
North Korea 2-0 Palestine
North Korea 4-0 India
Tajikistan 0-2 North Korea
North Korea 2-0 Philippines

But with North Korea eliminated from World Cup qualifying and the Asian Challenge Cup over, there are no games planned in the immediate future for North Korea. So it seems they will be holding onto the title for the foreseeable near future.
