Most of us will probably enjoy keeping an eye on this tournament. If you have never heard of it, then click on the link below. What if the football world champions were declared as the result of a boxing style system?

UFWC

As the website shows, Hungary are the current UFW champions. Can Montenegro take their crown on August 20th?

I like the idea of this system. Matches which may have been viewed as meaningless friendlies can suddenly be elevated to title decider status! It's a rare opportunity for the minnows of this world to bask in glory for a little while.

It would be nice to keep an eye on it and focus on teams that we don't discuss that often.

I first heard about this a few years back and found it pretty novel, if a bit silly.

Then Canada played for the title not long after losing to the Czechs. I hadn’t checked it for awhile. Hungary eh? Surprising. Nice to see that Zimbabwe held it for nearly a year.

cheers,

Strange idea, seems like the Scots were right all along that they became 'world champions' by beating England in 1967! England haven't held this title since 2000, perhaps we should hastily arrange a friendly with the winner of the Hungary - Montenegro match!

You're right that this is an interesting novelty, I suppose I'll now pay a bit of interest in that August friendly in Budapest!

Very bizarre. This reminds me of that 3 degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon game!

As if by magic...

England v Scotland 1967

Notice how the intro to the video puts the match into its inter-galactic context! :D

So the unofficial title has changed a few times since we last discussed it, passing to Sweden and now Holland,

And Holland's next match is against Scotland, who are the all-time UWFC champions!

Should be a clash of the titans :)

And the Dutch still hold it after a pair of 0-0 ties this past week, first versus Italy then against Paraguay.

The US blew it's chance to take the title belt away from Holland this weekend. We'll have to wait to some late May friendlies to see if somebody else can knock Holland off! :D

Well Holland held this unofficial title all the way through the World Cup Final where it now belongs, as does the real world championship, to Spain.

But Spain risks it's unofficial crown today with a team full of players still in preseason form and in the high altitude of Mexico City's Azteca Stadium.

Sure was, an injury time goal by david Silva saves a 1-1 time for Spain in Mexico. I did not see the match but Chicharito Hernandez got Mexico's goal in the 1st half. With Spain using a team of players, some of whom (those from Barcelona) who have not even begun preseaosn training, I would say a 1-1 result in Mexico is not bad at all.
