Naldo will start for Werder Bremen, also watch for young Mesut Ozil who while not Diego is a pretty dynamic attacking midfielder. These are the respective starting teams for tonight's match:

Shakhtar Donetsk: 30-Andriy Pyatov; 33-Darijo Srna, 5-Olexandr Kucher, 27-Dmytro Chygrynskiy, 26-Razvan Rat; 18-Mariusz Lewandowski, 7-Fernandinho; 11-Ilsinho, 8-Jadson, 22-Willian; 17-Luiz Adriano.

Werder Bremen: 1-Tim Wiese; 8-Clemens Fritz, 15-Sebatian Proedl, 4-Naldo, 2-Sebastian Boenisch; 25-Peter Niemeyer, 22-Torsten Frings, 6-Frank Baumann, 11-Mesut Ozil; 9-Markus Rosenberg, 24-Claudio Pizarro.

Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 Werder Bremen (aet)

Deserved win in my mind for Shakhtar who took the play to Bremen from the opening whistle. An entertaining first half where Shakhtar went in front as a through pass found Luiz Adriano escape from Werder's centerbacks and nicely finish past Tim Weise. Shakhtar were controlling play and finding space down the wings but could not sore another goal. 10 minutes after their goal, however, Werder equalized when a Naldo free kick, albeit hard hit went through goalie Pyatov's hands and into the net!

Weise made a couple of nice saves, one in each half to keep Shakhtar out but the 2nd half really was disappointing as neither team looked lively to my eyes. On to extra time where Shakhtar resumed their dominance and after a break down the right the ball was cut back to a Shakhtar player whose low shot of medium speed snuck under Weise's dive and into the net. The keeper who had played well all game long probably should have done better but few could deny that Shakhtar were the better team.

It was Jadson who scored the game winning goal. Weise probably should have gotten down for that as valenciano writes it was not a powerfully hit shot but then again it also was not a weakly hit one either. Still after making so many good saves earlier in the game it was disappointing to see Weise make such a determinative error. But Shakhtar were the better team, they had a good technically based passing game and some of their combination work was impressive and caused aot of danger for Werder Bremen's defense. I am happy Diego is on his way to Juventus but Bremen definitely missed his invention and drive in midfield.

I felt that it was a strange match last night. A storming first half followed by a subdued second half is the opposite of many finals. But Shakhtar thoroughly deserved their victory and congrats to them.

Last night’s final illustrated the decline of the UEFA Cup. It seemed quite low key for what is supposed to be a major final. It’ll be interesting to see if the re-branded tournament has any affect on how seriously it’s taken by the fans.

Well the Shakhtar fans seemed to be taking it quite seriously as did the young German girl in tears at the end of the match who was shown several times on camera. I do not think the UEFA Cup was in decline, as enganche noted the recent finals were quite good, last night's final match of the competition may not have lived up to the expectations from the other recent title games in the tournament but I think it serve sit's purpose by giving clubs like Shakhtar Donetsk, Werder Bremen, Zenit St Petersburg, Rangers, Sevilla, Espanyol, etc. something they can cherish, an opportunity to win a European club championship. The riches of the Champions League are beyond these clubs but they all can still achieve success via the UEFA Cup. Hopefully the revamped Europa League will also enable them to achieve that success and possibly even enrich them more so that the gap between the European "haves" and "have-nots" does not increase any more.

I was impressed with some of Shakhtar's passing moves, they combined good tactical sense with a technical passing game. The right back Dario Srna particularly impressed me. Deserved win in my eyes for Shakhtar.

It was not as good a final as some other recent UEFA Cup Finals and as opposed to recent champions Shakhtar, and runnerup Werder Bremen too, was a team which was "relegated" from the Champions League. I do not know the set up next year for the Europa League but I would hope that this loophole will be closed and clubs can not drop down to the Europa League from the Champions.

Having said that, Shakhtar played well and are deserving champions. Like enganche, Srna really impressed me too.
