Diego has really been playing well for Werder Bremen, he is showing why clubs around Europe will be interested in signing him this summer. Meanwhile he can rescue a disappointing league season for Bremen by carrying the club to the UEFA Cup Final. He is definitely capable of doing that. |

Diego was excellent for Werder Bremen but I think their defense is vulnerable and Hamburg who are a well balanced team can exploit that. But as Mr Pither writes, the two clubs will know plenty about each other with all of their upcoming games between them. This may lead to some bad blood developing. But Diego is the sort of player who can produce a match winning performance. Marseille just could not finish against Shakhtar and once again Steve Mandanda let them down in goal. He got beat to the near post from a shot taken near the end line! Inexcusable. I just don't understand what Domenech sees in Mandanda as France's starting goalkeeper. |

I made a mistake in this quoted post. The number of matches they will play in the next few weeks was correct but the German Cup semifinal is only one match and they played last night with Werder Bremen advancing on penalties after a 1-1 draw. But the clubs still have their home and home series in the UEFA Cup plus a league match to play in the coming weeks. So as Alan Partridge would say, "I am like the boy in corrective shoes... I stand corrected!" |

Back of the net! But shouldn't that be, "like the boy in orthapedic shoes I stand corrected?" 4 games between Hamburg and Bremen within a month. Familiarity should bring a lot of contempt between those northern German rivals. |

OK then, like the boy in orthaepedic shoes, I stand corrected! ![]() If the Bremen-Hamburg meeting in the German Cup was any indication these remaining three games between the teams will be very even. But it is players like Bremen's Diego and Hamburg's Olic who can make a difference for their respective sides. |

Semifinal first leg scores: Dynamo Kyiv 1-1 Shakhtar Donetsk Werder Bremen 0-1 Hamburg I did not see the Ukrainian teams game but that is a good result for Shakhtar away from home. They will like that away goal. As will Hamburg who won at Bremen. I thought Hamburg did a good job on Diego who is the player who makes Bremen tick. |

I agree that Hamburg did a good job on Diego but like Chelsea with Messi, the question now becomes can they contain Diego a second time? Hamburg's Olic is a good forward, they will miss him next season when he heads to Bayern Munich. |

Semifinal 2nd leg results: Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 Dynamo Kyiv (3-2 overall) Hamburg 2-3 Werder Bremen (3-3 overall, Bremen adavnce on away goals) The dramatic endings were not restricted to the Champions Legaue with the score even on the night and overall in the battle of the Ukrainian teams and with extra time looming, Ilsinho made a fine individual play to get past his defender and score in the 89th minute to send Shakhtar to their first European Final. Then Diego led Werder Bremen to a 3-2 win over neighbors hamburg in a thrilling second leg. He may have eben contained in leg 1 but in leg 2 he won the game for Bremen with his playmaking and scoring ability. Claudio Pizarro and Frank Baumann with Bremen's other goals. Ivico Olic with both of Hamburg's goals. So Werder save an otherwise drab season with a UEFA Cup Final place. Now for the bad news, yellow cards pcike dup by Diego and forward Hugo Almeida mean they will both eb suspended for the final. |

An excellent match between Bremen and Hamburg, it looked after Olic's early goal had put Hamburg 2-0 up on aggregate that it was over but Bremen did not give in. Diego did lead them back with a beautifully worked combination with Pizarro, then Diego hit the cross bar. But Alex Silva, his compatriot with Hamburg sucked Diego into an argument and that led to both getting booked. A costly one for Diego as Manzanares wrote because it means Bremen will miss their on field inspiration in the final. But an even match was turned in my opinion in Bremen's favour when Pizarro's powerful shot from outside of the box went past Rost in Hamburg's goal. It looked savable even in spite of the power but that goal finally put Bremen in front on aggregate and they did not look back after that. In leg 1 we talked how Diego was effectively neutralised by Hamburg but he came to life in this second leg while Hamburg's Piotr Trochowski, so involved in game 1, was a non factor in Thursday's match. And Hamburg missed his promptings. So it will be Werder Bremen playing Shakhtar Donetsk in Istanbul in the last ever UEFA Cup Final. |

I caught a replay of the Hamburg-Bremen game last night and it was a good one. Some bad luck for Hamburg though in this one, not only does Pizarro's long distance shot somehow get past Rost for Bremen's 2nd goal but the third goal by Baumann was scored off a corner kick which happened under bizarre circumstances. A Hamburg player near his own corner flag was getting ready to kick the ball back to his goalie when the ball hit a piece of paper thrown from the stands and took a bigger bounce than the defender expected, so instead of striking the ball with his boot, he hit it with his shin and the ball spun out for a corner. The corner which led to the goal which eventually decided which of the two clubs went through to the final! And who says fans do not have any effect on the outcome of a match!

I watched the game too and that was an unfortunate incident which led to Bremen's clinching goal. I thought Hamburg had done enough to win but that bizarre bounce and subsequent goal off the corner did them in. Too bad as a Bremen without Diego will not in my opinion be a strong opponent for Shakhtar in the final. |

Wednesday is the UEFA Cup Final in Istanbul, Shakhtar Donetsk vs Werder Bremen. Bremen are facing a lot of absences, Diego and Hugo Almeida are suspended and Per Mertesacker is out injured. Plus numerous other players are, not surprisingly at this stage of the season carrying various sorts of injuries too. Werder's coach Thomas Schaaf said he's not even sure yet who can or can not play! Shakhtar come in to this game in much better shape physically. |

Shakhtar's only absence is Hubschman their defender. Other than Sevilla's two championships the other recent champions of the UEFA Cup have all been eastern European, namely Russian clubs. Shakhtar have a pragmatic team built around Brasilian attackers. With Diego missing from Werder Bremen I would say Shakhtar are the favourites. |

I was reading that Naldo, Werder's Brazilian centerback is doubtful for tonight's game with an adductor injury. That means both starting central defenders will be out (Mertesacker is the other) plus the team's creative and goalscoring figure in Diego. Hugo Almeida is probably the one absentee they can best cover for. This final should really test Werder's depth and resiliency. |

The UEFA Cup has had some pretty good finals in the recent past so hopefully this last UEFA Cup will also be a good one. Werder Bremen are an attacking team who usually play entertaining games so that should help the spectacle of it all but obviously Diego's loss not only is a blow to Bremen's title hopes but also to any neutral who likes to watch a good footballer. |
