A disappointing way for Paolo Maldini to end his career in European play, going out to Werder Bremen after leading by 2 goals. And Milan's fans were not present in great numbers to witness it either, San Siro was only about 1/3 full. But looking at the teams remaining in the UEFA Cup it is good to see teams who don't normally get a chance to win trophies contending for the title. Amazingly Ukraine with 3 clubs left in the final 16 while Spain has 0, England 1 and Italy 1! |

I don't see the logic in what Villa and Spurs did. Both clubs worked hard last season and spoke about the importance of 'getting into Europe', only to field reserves in important knockout European games and to be eliminated. I can appreciate from Tottenham's point of view that they've got a big cup final to play against Manchester United, but Villa have a league game at home to Stoke! If you're going to decide that the UEFA Cup is such an inconvenience that you'll just play reserve and youth players, wouldn't it make a lot more sense to do that in the first round and get knocked out straight away? Villa, in particular, played some great football in the UEFA Cup in the autumn group stage and their win over Ajax was one of the most exciting games I've seen this season. What's the point of wasting all that good work by essentially forfeiting a knockout tie with CSKA Moscow? I don't think these clubs understand what their fans want, which is to win trophies. It seems to me that clubs too readily sacrifice a cup competition so that they can try to finish a few places higher in the league. Okay, I understand that it would be a big deal for Villa to finish 4th, but they're not exactly going to have an open-top bus parade to celebrate that. I'd be interested to speak to Villa fans and ask them what they'd rather do, finish 4th and win nothing or finish 5th and win the UEFA Cup. I have a hunch that the answer might surprise a few people at Aston Villa. Besides, in my view it's a fallacy that you have to choose between doing well in the league and doing well in a cup. Clubs with smallish squads and slender means have been doing both for decades. If I was a Villa or Spurs fan I'd be pretty angry about this, let alone a Villa or Spurs fan that had paid a lot of hard-earned money to travel all the way to Moscow or Donetsk. This article has Villa boss Martin O'Neill's justification, plus some other interesting additions to the debate. English clubs now seem to have a policy of fielding weakened teams in the UEFA Cup - Portsmouth did it this season and Bolton did it last season (although their weakened team surprisingly eliminated Atletico Madrid en route to the last 16). I do find it depressing to see Bolton boss Gary Megson weighing up the money on offer for winning the UEFA Cup or finishing in the top half of the Premier League. What a sorry state of affairs... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/t...lla/7914553.stm |

I don't actually see that Tottenham have a point, to be honest: if they win tomorrow's final it gets them into the same competition as they've just been knocked out of...I don't understand the logic! |

I did not realize but probably should not be surprised given the amount of money in English football that the prize money for a higher finish in the English league is greater than what could be won in the UEFA Cup. Maybe that only applies to the English league as clubs in other leagues did not field weakened teams in the UEFA Cup. |

Because it has not been mentioned yet, Thursday's UEFA Cup scores: CSKA Moscow 1 - 0 Shakhtar Donetsk Dynamo Kyiv 1 - 0 Metalist Kharkiv Hamburger SV 1 - 1 Galatasaray Paris S.G. 0 - 0 Braga Werder Bremen 1 - 0 Saint-Etienne Manchester C. 2 - 0 Aalborg BK Marseille 2 - 1 Ajax Amsterdam Udinese 2 - 0 Zenit St. Petersburg These were the first legs of the round of 16 and agood night for the home clubs, all won except for Hamburg and PSG who drew. Yet only Manchester City and Udinese won by 2 goal margins so the return legs should be interesting. |

Some 2nd leg games were played: Saint-Etienne 2 - 2 Werder Bremen (2-3 aggregate) Ajax Amsterdam 2 - 2 Marseille AET (3-4 aggregate) Tyrone Mears with the extra time goal to give Marseille the win in a competitive match against Ajax. St Etienne gave Werder Bremen a good match but fell short. |

More scores, Agg. First leg Second leg Bremen 3-2 St-Etienne 1-0 Report » 2-2 Marseille (aet) 4-3 Ajax 2-1 Report » 2-2 Dynamo Kyiv (ag) 3-3 Metalist 1-0 Report » 2-3 CSKA Moskva 1-2 Shakhtar 1-0 Report » 0-2 Hamburg 4-3 Galatasaray 1-1 Report » 3-2 More » PSG 1-0 Braga 0-0 Report » Udinese 2-1 Zenit 2-0 Report » 0-1 Man. City 2-2 AaB 2-0 Report » As I am typing this PSG with a 81st minute Guillaume Hoarau goal just eliminated Braga 1-0 on aggregate while Aalborg with an 85th minute goal and injury time penalty have sent their match against Manchester City into extra time. Hamburg were at one point down 2-0 on the night and 3-1 overall against Galatasaray before roaring abck and winning 4-3 on aggregate. Shakhtar eliminated CSKA Moscow with a 2-0 win tonight while Zenit's 1-0 victory was not enough to reverse Udinese's 2 goal margin as the current holders were eliminated. |

Manchester City eventually won via penalties over Aalborg last night. The quarterfinal draw was made, along with the pairings for the semifinals and it went this way: Hamburg-Manchester City Werder Bremen-Udinese Shakhtar Donetsk-Marseille Dinamo Kiev-Paris St Germain Quarterfinals to be played 9 April and 16 April, semifinals on 30 April and 7 May with the final in Istanbul on 20 May. To me there is no clear favorite in this tournament and the draw has set up the possibility of an all German, all krainian or all French semifinal. England's manchester City and Italy's Udinese are the teams with the opportunities to break those possibilities up. |

I would agree with you Don Balon, there is not a clear cut favourite among the eight clubs remaining and hopefully that leads to an evenly balanced competition. I have always enjoyed the UEFA Cup and I hope it goes out well before getting rebranded next season as the Europa Cup. There are not any real outsiders this season remaining but all 8 are clubs who do not have any realistic hopes of challenging in the Champions League so this competition is providing them with this opportunity for European glory. |

Quarterfinal, first leg results: Shakhtar Donetsk 2 - 0 Marseille Hamburger SV 3 - 1 Manchester C. Paris S.G. 0 - 0 Dynamo Kyiv Werder Bremen 3 - 1 Udinese Good wins for Hamburg, Bremen and Shakhtar while Kyiv with a valuable draw in Paris. But at 0-0 PSG still have a good shot with a scoring draw in Ukraine. |

I think Shakhtar had the best result as unlike Hamburg and Bremen, their two goal home victory margin was obtained without giving up an away goal. Dynamo Kyiv did obtain a good result in Paris but at 0-0, PSG do, as Manzanares wrote have a good opportunity in the return game. But overall you have to say this was a good day for the German and Ukrainian clubs, a poor one for the French clubs and the single representatives from England and Italy. |

Udinese's late goal by Quagliarella gives them some hope for the return leg but Bremen led by Diego played well. I remember there being some discussion about Germany looking for a goalkeeper, well Bremen's keeper Tim Wiese sure looked good today and came up with some big saves. |

Kiev came to Paris to defend and they were successful as PSG could not finihs off what they created. Maybe in Kiev the home team will be required to attack more which could give PSG some openings but they cannot be as wasteful as they were in leg 1 if they want to succeed. Marseille were somewhat similar in that they just could not put anything away, Shakhtar scored their opening goal against the run of play, thereafter the game was more even but it leaves Marselle alot of work next week at the Velodrome. I think the ebst game of the day was Hamburg-Man City. The visitors went up after 1 minute through Stephen Ireland, Hamburg soon leveled the score on a Mathijsen header off a corner and were a constant threat after that but were stopped by Shay Given's saves until in the 2nd half Richards handled and Piotr Trochowski converted the PK. Later Trochowski, the man of the match, crossed low for Guerrero to score. The away goal gives Man City hope as discussed here but if Hamburg can play anything close to how they did in this one, they should win it. |

Quarterfinal second leg results with aggregate totals in brackets: Dynamo Kyiv 3 - 0 Paris S.G. [3-0] Manchester City 2 - 1 Hamburger SV [3-4] Marseille 1 - 2 Shakhtar Donetsk [1-4] Udinese 3 - 3 Werder Bremen [4]6] A great day for German and Ukrainian clubs, Kyiv crushed PSG, Man City pushed Hamburg but could not overcome the first leg deficit, Marseille could not finish against Shaktar and instead got burned twice on the counter while Udinese had tied the series up against Bremen but two second half Bremen goals sealed their win. As in the first leg, Diego scored twice for Bremen. The semifinals will be one all Ukrainian and one all German matchup, Dynamo Kyiv-Shakhtar Donetsk Hamburg-Werder Bremen |

Hamburg and Werder Bremen not only have the two legs of the UEFA Cup semifinals coming up but also a two legged semifinal in the German Cup. So these neighbours, and rivals, will see quite a lot of each other in the next month. |
