Werder Bremen-Milan does look like the pick of the next round games to me too. Bremen like to attack and they do give the opposition room so that should benefit Milan, it also will be interesting to see the battle of the Brazilian playmakers as Diego goes against Kaka and Ronaldinho. A lot can change though between now and February when this all resumes again but this does look like a good matchup. Milan have never won the UEFA Cup before and in this the competition's final year, before it gets renamed to the ridiculous sounding Europa Cup next season, would be a good opportunity to put Milan's name on another piece of silverware.

Valencia has to travel to Dynamo Kyiv on Wednesday. Expect Los Che to come home to Espana with a draw. That is the best case scenario. A lose could very well happen too. I don't think a win is realistic. I hope we pull it out, but I don't know what to expect anymore , except that we won't keep a clean sheet...

Dynamo Kiev 1-1 Valencia.

Silva scored after 8 mins. We sat back the final 82. Dynamo equalised via an elbow. That same player got sent off 30 mins later for diving. We still sat back. Decent result. Del Horno was awful.

Wednesday's results:
Dynamo Kyiv 1 - 1 Valencia
Zenit St. Petersburg 2 - 1 Stuttgart
Olympiakos Piraeus 1 - 3 Saint-Etienne
Aston Villa 1 - 1 CSKA Moscow
Werder Bremen 1 - 1 AC Milan
Bordeaux 0 - 0 Galatasaray
NEC Nijmegen 0 - 3 Hamburger SV
Paris S.G. 2 - 0 Wolfsburg
Sampdoria 0 - 1 Metalist Kharkiv
Aalborg BK 3 - 0 Deportivo La Coruna
Braga 3 - 0 Standard Liege

Five more matches will be played on Thursday night. A couple of surprising results tome, notably St. Etienne, struggling in the French league, crushing Olympiakos in Greece. Werder Bremen stayed alive against Milan when Diegos cored a late equaliser to offset Inzaghi's goal for Milan. Guillaume Hoarau with two late goals to enable PSG to win 2-0 at home over Wolfsburg. I was also surprised by the size of the home wins for Aalborg (over Deportivo) and Braga (over Standard Liege) 3-0 in both instances. Those two ties are for all intents over.

Next to St. Etienne's win in Greece, merit also to Hamburg for a 3-0 win over NEC in Nijmegen, not so much the win but the margin on the road, and to Metalist Kharkiv for winning 1-0 in Genoa against Sampdoria.

Aarlborg's win is even more surprising given that they are in the close season at the present time. I saw some of the game and Deportivo were pretty inept.

Valencia obtained a pretty good result in the snow in Kiev but they had the chance for a victory as Kiev played the last portion of the match down a man. But Valencia's struggles defending set pieces came back to haunt them as that is how Kiev equalised. This series is in Valencia's hands returning home tied 1-1 but with how the club have played recently, nothing is assured.

A disappointing result for Deportivo. When as in this game versus Aalborg they have to go and use their bench, the club suffer.

A good night on Thursday for Dutch clubs, Twente beat Marseille 1-0 in France and Ajax did the same to Fiorentina in Italy.

Spurs and Aston Villa are playing largely reserve teams in their matches this week, leading some people in England to say that the UEFA cup is dead on its feet. How seriously do clubs in other countries take the competition, would you say?

Much more seriously than apparently Spurs and Aston Villa are taking it. English clubs get so much cash from TV rights so the prize money and prestige in the UEFA Cup may not matter as much to them but elsewhere this is an additional source of revenue and prestige.

This is something I posted on a Valencia forum tonight. This just doesn't apply to fans of Valencia, but a fan of any club that is struggling at the moment.

Before I start rambling, I would just like to point out that I have been drinking

We HAVE to continue to support the club. Fcuk Soriano. Fcuk Marchena. Fcuk Albiol. Fcuk Soler. Fcuk Silva. Fcuk Albelda. They are IDUVIDUALS at the club. We support THE CLUB, VALENCIA, not induvidulas at it or the people that run it. We need to continue to support the club by posting messages on forums, buying shirts, etc. This way we help create more fans. The more people that watch, the more exposure the club gets, which equals more revenue. THE CLUB is bigger than any one person.

Let's be honest. In the summer, Villa and Silva will leave. Maybe Mata and Joaquin as well. Also Marchena (I won't miss him), Fernandes, Miguel. The club will continue without them. We will be good again. By good I mean top 4 and challenging for the title in la Liga. It WILL TAKE TIME though.

We have to be realistic. We PROBABLY won't finish in the top 5. That means NO CHAMPIONS LEAGUE or UEFA CUP. We will also lose most of our top players. But we all have known this for a while now. Nothing has really changed. It's just that this result against Kiev has put everything in perspective. Valencia will survive this bad spell. No matter if it's a bad spell of 1 year, 2 years, or 5 years. WE WILL BE BACK. We just have to hang in.

I said that I wouldn't change my avitar back to Valencia until we start playing well. WE ARE NOT playing well at the momnet, but they need our support, no matter how small our support is.

AMUNT VALENCIA! AMUNT!

Galatasaray beat Bordeaux 4-3 in a thriller. Turkish wonder kid Arda Turan had 2 goals. Harry Kewell had an absolute wonder strike. Sabri Sarioglu scored the winner at the death with a sweet volley. Great stuff. I hate you Gala, but good luck in the next round.

A disastrous week for Spanish clubs in Europe, not a single victory in either the Champions or UEFA. But the UEFA Cup was not kind to teams from England or Italy either. Here is the draw for the next round of the UEFA Cup, note how many eastern Europan teams have made it through:

Werder Bremen v St Etienne
CSKA Moscow v Shakhtar Donetsk
Udinese v Zenit St Petersburg
Paris St Germain v Braga
Dynamo Kiev v Metalist Kharkiv
Manchester City v AaB Aalborg
Olympique Marseille v Ajax Amsterdam
Hamburg SV v Galatasaray

This was Milan's last realistic hope for honors this season and they were 2-0 up at home against Werder Bremen when they fell apart as Claudio Pizarro stuck the dagger in Milan's heart. Aston Villa and Spurs may have played reserve teams in this competition but Milan like most of the teams in the competition were looking for UEFA Cup glory but defensive lapses again cost the rossoneri.

As gaviota notes it is Russian and Ukrainian teams doing well this season in the UEFA Cup. It is refreshing to see clubs not accustomed to international honors challenging for this Cup.
