Deportivo, Stuttgart, Aston Villa and Manchester City all advanced, and as far as I know no major team was eliminated. But Man City were pressed, they needed an 89th minute own goal by Midtyjlland's Danny Califf to tie the series up on aggregate and eventually won on penalties. |

The rather large draw for the UEFA Cup first round:
Poor Standard Liege, they get eliminated from the Champions League by Liverpool with a 117th minute goal and now have to return back to the city to play Everton in the UEFA Cup! Napoli-Benfica looks like a game worthy of the quarterfinals of this competition not the opening round. And Borussia Dortmund-Udinese is another top notch opening round game. |

Simon of course had called his local pub to ask if they were showing the Omonia Nicosia match! ![]() I am surprised at Udinese's 2 goal road win but Benfica by scoring twice in a 3-2 loss at Napoli are still well situated for the return game. Standard Liege, Manchester City, PSG, Galatasaray and Valencia all did well too in their road trips in varying degrees of difficult stadiums. |

I was actually over in Liverpool yesterday to go to an art exhibition, and there were loads of Standard Liege fans about. I suppose it's only a pretty short hop from Belgium to England and Liverpool's John Lennon airport ('above us only sky', as the slogan says  ) is known for its budget flights but I was impressed with the number and the noise of the Liege fans. It's a well-worn path for them as many of them would have been over in Liverpool just a few weeks ago for their CL tie, but they're a very good side and they have every chance of extending their European campaign after a score draw at Goodison. Seems like Depor have a small mountain to climb at home to Brann in the return leg, and I did manage to see the first half of the Portsmouth game, Pompey may have won 2-0 in their first ever European game but Guimaraes look a useful team and I'm not sure that tie is over just yet. I didn't quite get round to playing that City prank but I did hear that their fans were enjoying their new-found status. They were singing, to the tune of 'Winter Wonderland' 'There's only one Abu Dhabi, one Abu Dhabi, Fill up yer car, and we'll buy Kaka, Walking in an Abu Dhabi wonderland' Given that they've also nicknamed their Eastlands stadium 'Middle Eastlands' it seems like it's smiles all round in the blue half of town! |

What will they do at Eastlands when the Abu Dhabi group pulls out? You just know that inevitably that will happen. Great result for Standard Liege away to Everton. I found that to be one of the better away results of the day. They'll enjoy the two away goals as they return home. Ajax with a comfortable win in van Basten's first European club match in charge. Of course they beat a team named after a ficititous movie character from Kazakhstan! ![]() As Simon alluded to, Deportivo losing by two goals in Norway was one of the more surprising first leg results to me. They'll have a job to do in leg two. |

I watched most of the Everton game and they were a bit unfortunate to go out, as they played pretty well and certainly were piling on the pressure towards the end when one more goal would have taken them into extra time. They were also aggrieved when Steven Defour, already on a booking, received no punishment for a terrible tackle on Yakubu. Shortly afterwards, Defour made the first Liege goal. Bottom line is that it's been a really poor start to the season by an Everton team who were so impressive and reliable all last season. They've lost all 3 home league games and are now out of Europe even before the group stage. David Moyes' future is up in the air although he insists he will stay with Everton. Meanwhile, Liege have been really impressive when I've seen them, they look to be of a CL standard and were unfortunate to draw Liverpool in the CL qualifiers. They could be a team to watch this year in the UEFA Cup. The four other English teams advanced, although Portsmouth needed two Peter Crouch goals in extra-time to carry them through. They join four German teams, four Spanish teams and three Italian teams in the draw for the group stage. |

Good point Simon about Standard Liege and their play in the early going. Doesn't sound as if either of the city of Liverpool's clubs will be looking forward to any more meetings with them! valenciano, Valencia's game was clsoer than you wrote, Maritimo were up 1-0, and even on aggregate, until Valencia scored twice in the final 15 minutes. Deportivo's hero was Aranzubia with those three penalty saves but also new signing defender Diego Colotto who scored both of their goals in regualtion time. It was a shame to see either of Benfica or Napoli go out this early in the competition, the same applies to Udinese and Borussia Dortmund and as expected both series were very clsoe with benfica and udiense advancing. Interesting that both Dortmund and udiense won 2-0 on the road against one another, with the Italian club prevailing on penalties. I want to welcome Futbolito4 to our message board and we all look forward to his contributions here. As you could imagine from the name he is the son of futbol4 so we will still be getting contributions from the futbol loving Zamorano family.

Welcome Futbolito4, I am glad to see you joined our message baord. As a fellow Milan fan all I can say is I hope the lesser strain of playing in the UEFA Cup enables Milan to do what Bayern Munich did the season before in Germany when they too were not in the Champions League, and concentrated on winning their domestic championship. What better way to send off Maldini to retirement than a scudetto? As for TV coverage in these early rounds of the UEFA Cup it is spotty. If Milan advance farther, I would expect their games to be more readily available. I have a friend who is a Napoli fan and he was actually relieved, or at least that was the spin he was giving me, that Napoli were eliminated by Benfica as he didn't think his club had the depth to play in both the league and Europe. |

The draw for the group stage of the UEFA Cup (each team plays the other in the group once with the top three advancing to the next round): GROUP A: Schalke 04, Paris SG, Manchester City, Racing Santander, FC Twente GROUP B: Benfica, Olympiacos, Galatasaray, Hertha Berlin, Metalist Kharkiv GROUP C: Sevilla, VfB Stuttgart, Sampdoria, Partizan Belgrade, Standard Liege GROUP D: Tottenham, Spartak Moscow, Udinese, Dinamo Zagreb, NEC Nijmegen GROUP E: AC Milan, Heerenveen, SC Braga, Portsmouth, VfL Wolfsburg GROUP F: Hamburg, Ajax, Slavia Prague, Aston Villa, MSK Zilina GROUP G: Valencia, Club Brugge, Rosenborg, FC Copenhagen, Saint-Etienne GROUP H: CSKA Moscow, Deportivo La Coruna, Feyenoord, Nancy, Lech Poznan I look at a few difficult groups here, particularly A, B and C where in my view there are at least 4 pretty good teams drawn together. There are some other groups with 3 pretty good teams but since three advance that shouldn't be as tricky a group. |

I agree with Merengue, these two groups especially look difficult:
I don't know much about Metalist Kharkiv but I can imagine any away games there in October and November won't be pleasant weather wise. The remaining teams in Group B are all pretty evenly matched in my opinion. In Group C Sevilla and Stuttgart may look the best but the other three teams all should be stubborn opponents. Look what Standard Liege have done against both Liverpool and Everton already this season. Partizan are always a skillful bunch and while Sampdoria are not off to the best of starts in Serie A, they have the personnel to cause problems. I always wonder since each team only plays the other once, how do they figure out who is to be the home team for which match? Is there a blind draw? Or is it based on some seeding system? EDIT: I see shelsoccer beat me to this question! |

I think that's a really enticing draw for the group stage, plenty of good games in prospect. I take it the teams mentioned first in each group are the top seeds? In which case Spurs are seeded because of their progress in Europe last year, but if they're going to do that status any justice whatsoever they're going to need to turn their form round 180 degrees. But yes, plenty of good sides about and teams with strong support and pedigree, which should make for some exciting occasions with good atmosphere. There are three former champions of Europe in Group F, for example. I'm quite looking forward to this, keeps football on our screens on a Thursday night! |
