If I was Mexes I'd be tempted to tell Domenech where he could stick his team! I notice that Gomis isn't in that squad, is there still a future for him with France or was his Euro 2008 inclusion one of Domenech's more hare-brained moments? |

I was looking through the list of European qualifiers this weekend and Austria vs France was probably the most interesting one out there. Some of Europe's other powers are playing very weak teams, Spain vs Bosnia, England vs Andorra, Italy vs Cyprus, Germany vs Liechtenstein. Hard to get excited by any of those games. |

Cyprus gave Italy a lot of problems, maybe there is a reason why their champion club advanced to the Champions League and another is doing well in the UEFA Cup! It took two DiNatale goals, the final one in the 90th minute to give Italy a 2-1 win in Cyprus! Austria strated off well under their new coach Karel Bruckner, the ex Czech coach as they beat France 3-1 in Vienna! They were saving their goals at Euro 2008 for this match! Maybe now France will realzie the mistake they made keeping Domenech? Not all small teams came through, Andorra did well to only lose 0-2 to England but Liechtenstein were not surprisingly no match for Germany, 6-0 to Joachim Low's team. |

As rosarino noted, Germany and I'd add Portugal (4-0 winners vs Malta) were the big winners on Saturday, Lithuania with the upset of the day defeating Romania 3-0 in Romania! A close second is one I enjoyed, Austria's 3-1 win over France. Here are all of the day's scores: WC 2010 qual. - Europe (Group 1) Albania 0 - 0 Sweden Hungary 0 - 0 Denmark Malta 0 - 4 Portugal WC 2010 qual. - Europe (Group 2) Moldova 1 - 2 Latvia Israel 2 - 2 Switzerland Luxembourg 0 - 3 Greece WC 2010 qual. - Europe (Group 3) Poland 1 - 1 Slovenia Slovakia 2 - 1 Northern Ireland WC 2010 qual. - Europe (Group 4) Wales 1 - 0 Azerbaijan Liechtenstein 0 - 6 Germany WC 2010 qual. - Europe (Group 5) Armenia 0 - 2 Turkey Belgium 3 - 2 Estonia Spain 1 - 0 Bosnia-Herzegovina WC 2010 qual. - Europe (Group 6) Ukraine 1 - 0 Belarus Andorra 0 - 2 England Croatia 3 - 0 Kazakhstan WC 2010 qual. - Europe (Group 7) Romania 0 - 3 Lithuania Serbia 2 - 0 Faroe Islands Austria 3 - 1 France WC 2010 qual. - Europe (Group 8) Georgia 1 - 2 Ireland Montenegro 2 - 2 Bulgaria Cyprus 1 - 2 Italy WC 2010 qual. - Europe (Group 9) Rep. of Macedonia 1 - 0 Scotland Norway 2 - 2 Iceland |

Lithuania and Austria as noted were the upsets of the day. Austria has so much size and power and they put that to use scoring twice off of free kicks which were touched on into the net, then their final score occurred when Mexes tackled an Austrian on another set piece and Austria converted the resulting penalty. I am sure Domenech has his excuses ready made, i.e. we didn't finish our chances, but come on, how much patience can France's federation show the guy? Holland only played a friendly but lost 2-1 to Australia as they went down a man when Maarten Steklenburg conceded a penalty and got sent off. New coach Bert van Marwijk must do without the retired van Nistelrooy and van der Saar but his son in law Mark van Bommel is back on the team. I'm not sure that is a fair trade off! I think it will take a few games for Holland to sort itself out in this post van Basten era. |

Give Cyprus a lot of credit, they were very feisty and complicated matters very much for Italy but Gilardino backheeled a long pass to Camoranesi who lifted it up for DiNatale to strike the injury time winner. A very nice piece of skill and a sign that Italy's quality can still lift it even when the team aren't playing the very best. But DiNatale is really playing well now and Lippi is giving him the continuity that Donadoni denied him. |

I have to say Cyprus' effort surprised me too but it was good to seea team full of fight and energy. This was a great occasion for the Cypriots, playing the World Cup champion and they gave it a good go. DiNatale however had the skill, or the quality as xeneize says, to deny them the victory though. Italy needs to improve but a win when not playing your best against a motivated opponent is nothing to snear at. DiNatale is becoming one of my favorite players for the Azzurri! |

Here is the complete list of worldwide friendlies played this week: February 10 FT Cyprus 0 - 2 Serbia FT Slovakia 2 - 3 Ukraine FT Brazil 2 - 0 Italy February 11 FT Latvia 0 - 0 Armenia FT Mozambique 2 - 0 Malawi FT Moldova 1 - 1 Rep. of Macedonia FT Libya 2 - 3 Uruguay FT Liechtenstein 0 - 2 Iceland FT Kuwait 1 - 1 Azerbaijan FT Algeria 2 - 1 Benin FT Cyprus 3 - 2 Slovakia FT Israel 1 - 0 Hungary FT Kazakhstan 2 - 0 Estonia FT Serbia 0 - 1 Ukraine FT Lithuania 3 - 1 Andorra FT Poland 1 - 0 Wales FT Togo 1 - 1 Burkina Faso FT Cameroon 3 - 1 Guinea FT Egypt 2 - 2 Ghana FT South Africa 0 - 2 Chile FT Turkey 1 - 1 Ivory Coast FT Romania 1 - 2 Croatia FT Angola 0 - 4 Mali FT Morocco 0 - 0 Czech Republic FT Greece 1 - 1 Denmark FT Austria 0 - 2 Sweden FT Germany 0 - 1 Norway FT Switzerland 1 - 1 Bulgaria FT Tunisia 1 - 1 Holland FT Belgium 2 - 0 Slovenia FT Jamaica 0 - 0 Nigeria FT France 0 - 2 Argentina FT Portugal 1 - 0 Finland FT Spain 2 - 0 England February 12 FT Peru 0 - 1 Paraguay FT Venezuela 2 - 1 Guatemala FT Colombia 2 - 0 Haiti Norway winning at Germany looks to be the real surprise there. I get the impression post Euro 2008 that Germany have not been that sharp but I am just writing off the top of my head, without looking at the qualifying standings. Good results for both Tunisia and Morocco tying with Holland and Czech Republic and Ukraine won at Serbia which is never easy whether it is an official game or not. |

I watched France's 0-2 loss in Marseille against Argentina. A poor game from France, they had more of the ball than Argentina but created very little. Ribery was the most active of France's attacking quartet of Anelka, henry, Ribery and Gourcuff. Benzema came on in the 2nd half for Anelka but barely saw the ball as Argentina just cut off all service to the front line. I thought Toulalan and Lassana Diarra did well in central midfield and the defense of Gallas, Mexes and Abidal shut down Argentina's exciting attackers for a good portion of the match too. But right back Bakary Sagna was given the run around and was turned on both Argentina goals. While Steve Mandanda in goal I thought had legitimate chances to stop both of Argentina's goals. We know while Domenech remains coach Sebastien Frey won't be around but Hugo Lloris should then in my view be France's keeper with Mickael Landreau his backup. Mandanda is not good enough for Les Bleus. I would not discard Sagna as I think this was just a poor game from him but Rennes Rod Fanni is someone I would like to see more of at right back as is Lyon's Antoine Reveillere once he recovers from injury. There is plenty of talent with this French team but they do not play as a team. Coming up are home and away qualifying games versus Lithuania which are must win matches. Let us see how Domenech handles those but I can not wait for the day he is France's ex coach! |

The fans in Marseille turned on their own national team when it became 0-2 and were supporting Argentina! What more can the FFF, the French federation, know about how the fans feel about Domenech? France has excellent talent and so many good young players coming up but they also are in transition in this post Zidane, Thuram, Makelele era. They may not be world's best now but they can be so much better than they currently are with Domenech in charge. |
