But I haven't heard anyone expressing any animosity towards Queiroz. His CV shows he's a tremendously respected person in football and we could say it's been an unusual privilege to have had someone like that as assistant manager for five years across two stints although as I said before at times it hasn't necessarily seemed too much of a privilege! He wasn't too popular at first but seems to have gained respect and certainly no-one now has any problem with the entertainment level at Old Trafford!

Will Fergie still continue to benefit from Queiroz's scouting network? That will remain as one of his greatest legacies at Old Trafford. It offered a gateway to the most promising players in Brazil, Portugal and Southern Africa.

It will be difficult to find an asistant who can replicate that.

Queiroz was one of the more influential assistants that I can recall in the sport in recent years. Those will be big shoes to fill. But I wonder about his ability to be successful with Portugal? For all his fame, Queiroz' achievements as a coach have been limited.

It is discussed in the Spain forum but it is official now, Vicente Del Bosque is the new national coach of Spain. A good choice in my opinion. He's a guy with his feet on the ground.

So I am curious then as to which Euro 2008 coaches will continue in their positions? Off the top of my head I can think of Germany's Low, France's Domenech { }, Turkey's Terim, Russia's Hiddink and ?

Well, if Queiroz washes out as Portugal manager, he can always come back to the US and do a $500,000 analysis of the our youth development system for the USSF.

Of course, his previous recommendations -- which were hardly revolutionary -- were largely (not completely) ignored. Heck, he may also be able to fit in a second stint as coach of the hapless NY Red Bulls.

I have not heard of Sweden's coach Lars Lagerbeck going anywhere. He seems to have been coaching Sweden for years now and I guess has job security.

Petr Rada the assistant to retiring Karel Bruckner is the new Czech Republic coach.

http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news?slug=reu-...uters&type=lgns

According to his Wikipedia page, Lars Lagerback signed a two year contract extension to coach Sweden through 2010. He was Sweden's co-coach with Tommy Soderberg from 2000-2004 and the team's sole coach since then. That should make him the longest tenured coach of a major national team in the world.

Despite Poland's poor Euro tournament I believe Leo Beenhakker is staying on as their coach so there is another Euro 2008 survivor!

It is hard not to think that is the board of the French federation just being stubborn and hard headed, thinking, "We'll show the world we were correct in originally picking Domenech!"  I see France entering a period like they had from 1990-1994 when they were down between the post Platini generation and the developemnt of the Zidane era group of players.

I haven't been around for awhile. France's disappointing Euro 2008 forced me to take a break from the sport and this forum for awhile! :(

But extending Domenech's contract is beyond idiocy. I think Yogi's comments quoted here are a big reason why the FFF extended his contract prior to Euro 2008 and are now forced to keep him on. French stubbornness taken to the extreme. I too have low expectations for Les Bleus as a result of this.

Karel Bruckner the Czech Republic's former coach was supposed to be retiring, instead he's decided to become Austria's new coach.

Raymond Domenech has added occasional former French international Alain Boghossian to his coaching staff. Welcome Mssr. Boghossian to a sinking ship!

You just know Zidane will come out of retirement in two years time and win them the World Cup!

With many friendleis being played this week across Europe one of the more fascinating list of call ups came from France's Domenech who opted for some new players finally,

Goalkeepers: Steve Mandanda (Marseille), Hugo Lloris (Lyon)

Defenders: Jean-Alain Boumsong (Lyon), Bacary Sagna (Arsenal/ENG), William Gallas (Arsenal/ENG), Patrice Evra (Manchester United/ENG), Rod Fanni (Rennes), Philippe Mexes (AS Rome/ITA), Gael Clichy (Arsenal/ENG)

Midfielder: Mathieu Flamini (AC Milan/ITA), Lassana Diarra (Portsmouth/ENG), Jeremy Toulalan (Lyon), Florent Malouda (Chelsea/ENG), Samir Nasri (Arsenal/ENG), Alou Diarra (Bordeaux), Yoann Gourcuff (Bordeaux), Sidney Govou (Lyon)

Strikers: Thierry Henry (Barcelone/ESP), Nicolas Anelka (Chelsea/ENG), Karim Benzema (Lyon)

Nasri came in for the injured Ben Arfa. Even a blind man could tell France needed some fresh blood and they are finally incorporating younger players into the squad for this friendly versus Sweden.

This puzzles me--Mandanda was a backup at the Euros and Lloris is a hot prospect, but where is Mickael Landreau? How did he fall off the French depth chart so suddenly?

Even more curious to me is where was Sebastien Frey, who I think is one of the world's better goalkeepers? Frey was wondering the same too and at 28 he has decided to retire from international play, or at least until Domenech is no longer France's coach.

Marko Marin, remember the name, he almost made Germany's Euro 2008 team as a teenager, but got his first game yesterday against Belgium and scored on a twisting run. I am not sure yet if he reminds me of Thomas Hassler or Pierre Littbarski. Either way he's good and a player to watch.

I believe Domenech was looking to give an opportunity to some of the younger goalies. With Coupet getting up in age, I think Landreau now is the number 1 keeper with Mandanda and Lloris battling it out for the reserve spot and that is why Frey has decided to hang up his boots internationally as under Domeench he is the odd man out.

I should know better than to try and assume what is floating through Raymond Domenech's mind! Mandanda is France's new number 1 goalkeeper. This is the team Domenech is expected to use this Saturday in Vienna against Austria in the opening game of qualifying for World Cup 2010:

Mandanda - Sagna, Gallas, Mexès, Evra - Toulalan, L. Diarra - Govou, Nasri - Henry, Benzema.

To Domenech's credit he has turned to some players pre Euro 2008 we had been wondering why they were not on the team, or only were substitutes like Sagna, Mexes, L.Diarra and Nasri. Add in Mandanda, in excellent form with Marseille and there is a new look to this French team. Goalscoring has traditionally been the team's weakpoint, we will see if with Benzema and Henry that will change.
