Well one thing we all know now is you can't count Turkey out. Fantastic comeback, it reminded me a bit of Spain's 4-3 come from behind win in the final group game against Yugoslavia at Euro 2000. Then it was Alfonso Perez scoring the injury time game winner. Now it was Nihat. I'm with historyman, ever since his serious head injury Peter Cech has not been the same player. He's still a good goalie but he no longer in my view is a great goalie. But to be fair that had to have been a slippery ball in those wet conditions. And nobody has mentioend it since it was a meaningless game and was completely overshadowed by Turkey's great come from behind win but Switzerland did save some face by beating Portugal's reserves 2-0. Anybody else think Volkan Demirel's red card for pushing Koller in the chest was a little harsh? yellow yes, red no. He's a fine goalie and his loss will be felt by Turkey in the quarterfinals. |

I remember that great Spain comeback in 2000 Merengue. Yeah it was somewhat like yesterday's game wasn't it? Great drama and if you didn't enjoy that Turkey-Czech Republic game then you don't enjoy football. As somebody else wrote, I too don't have connections to either team but that second half just kept you on the edge of your seat. You could see the Czechs just had nothing left in the final 10 minutes and the Turks were just like a whirlwind coming at them from everywhere. A tough loss for Czech Republic but who can take away the acclaim Turkey deserves for such a comeback? Once they put those small, quick and skillful players on the field they had the opponents chasing shadows. Great move by fatih Terim.
I agree on both statements, a harsh red and his loss will be a major one for Turkey. Looks like this game was the end of the road for Koller and head coach Karel Bruckner with the Czechs. They both had plenty of success in the national team but now it is time for some new ideas and players. |

Mr. Pither is right, even a non football fan would love the drama and intensity of that game. Among the praise for Turkey how about some credit to Tuncay who seemed to be everywhere and was excellent at spraying passes around the field. And Altintop was good at getting in crosses in that second half as Turkey put so much pressure on the Czech defense. One of the most exciting football matches I've seen in a long time. |

That was a point I'd intended to make too. Tuncay was absolutely magnificent last night, and as you say he was everywhere. It kind of made sense when he went in goal at the end! Turkey just absolutely bombarded the Czechs towards the end and this old Czech side didn't have any answer. I think their legs had gone in the second half. Koller was great in the first half but faded badly in the second, and for me it was instructive that it was old man Galasek who didn't have the reactions or energy to get out at the end, thus playing Nihat onside. Great goal, besides the quality of the strike there's something aesthetically pleasing about the ball smashing in off the underside of the crossbar! I too was impressed with the Turks' never say die attitude and willingness to pile forward in attack, but remember that only really came at 2-0 when they had no other option, although the second Czech goal came against the run of play. The Turks were poor in the first half, they were very cautious and reticent. I hope when they play Croatia they remember that it's when they're in high-speed attacking mode that they're at their best! EDIT - I forgot to agree with Merengue as well. No way was that a sending off. Okay, maybe give him a yellow (even that's debatable IMO) but for goodness sake it was just a push, not a punch or anything. I was absolutely embarrassed for Koller that at 6'7'' he flopped to the ground and rolled around on the floor. I'd like to have seen just a yellow card, and for Koller rather than Volkan. |

Most of the superlatives have already been used up here but I'll add that the Turkey-Czech Republic game is why I watch this sport. What incredible drama and intensity! The Czechs will have a long time to think about it all sliding away from them but the point about the old legs of some of their key players, namely Koller and Galasaek is a good one. And Marek Jankulovski showed how he is much more effective going forward than defending on the left of defense, something we Milan fans knew quite well. I too thought Volkan's red card was harsh. When Schweinsteiger was sent off for Germany against Croatia, the reasoning given was that he pushed his opponent in the face, well yesterday Volkan pushed man mountain Koller in the chest and he then proceeded to flop down like he'd been shot. That is an extremely harsh red card and as Simon wrote, Koller should have received one too for his flop. Turkey may have some trouble finding players in the next round, they have a series of injuries in their central defense, goalie Volkan is now out and midfielder Mehmet Aurelio, who played very well against the Czechs, will be suspended. But the euphoria of their win should still carry on in the quarterfinal. |
