Zenit is an intriguing team. They are well-backed financially and have assembled some of the most notable young Russian talent along with a foreign contingent. They are one of the few teams in the post-Soviet era to break the stanglehold of the Moscow clubs domestically and, now, they're making a statement in Europe. The latter is never easy to do for Russian teams given their spring-fall schedule, but this could be a team that duplicates the UEFA Cup success that Spartak Moscow had a few years ago. |

I am another one who has always admired Dick Advocaat's coaching and it is good to see teams like Zenit and Getafe doing well in the UEFA Cup. Zenit really breaks out of defense quickly and they showed against Leverkusen they are very dangerous on the counter. If they have the financial backing that shelsoccer speaks of they may be able to keep their team together for awhile. As the current champions of Russia they will be in next season's Champions League or at least the preliminary stages of it. |

I think it was CSKA Moscow not Spartak who won the uEFA Cup several years ago but shelsoccer's point is a good one. Zenit seem to have the backing, the coaching and the players to continue to do well in this UEFA Cup and to build pon that for enxt seaosn in the Champions. Getafe absorbed a lot of pressure from Bayern in that first half then their passing game finally kicked in and Manu Del Moral almost scored just prior to Contra's goal. If they take that spirited and confident approach in the return game they do have a good chance to upset Bayern Munich. But beating Bayern anywhere is not easy, any team with Toni, Klose, Ribery and Shweinsteiger is going to be a tough opponent. |

Getafe is the talk of Spain this week and they'll have the whole country behind them tonight. Bayern always are a team you must respect but Getafe are the kind of team who enter games like this with just the right amount of confidence and without fear. Should be an interesting game. Getafe's bench has been tested these past few weeks and up till now they've responded. They'll need to again as Pablo, Mario and Granero will all be missing tonight. Zenit-Bayer looks determined already with that 4-1 away result by Zenit but the other three first leg games ended in ties so hopefully that sets up some good second leg games today. |

Eurogeta as Getafe have been called, do have the nation behind them. As a small club they've never really built up any anomisity with fans of another club, except possibly near neighbors Leganes but they're now in the third division! Bayern are bringing Klose back to the lineup today, Podolski started in his place in the first leg, and the tandem of Klose and Toni would give any defense headaches. Too bad Granero and Pablo are out as they're such good midfielders but like gaviota wrote, Getafe does have a good rotation policy and they've received contributions from numerous players. |

Quarterfinal second leg results with aggregate scores in parentheses: Zenit 0-1 Bayer Leverkusen (4-2) Getafe 3-3 Bayern Munich aet (4-4, Bayern on away goals) Sporting 0-2 Rangers [0-2] PSV Eindhoven 0-2 Fiorentina [1-3] I saw the Getafe-Bayern game and what a dramatic one it was! Getafe saved a Bayern shot off the line in the opening minutes, then had a defender De la Red sent off for bringing down Klose when he was breaking towards goal in the 7th minute (a harsh decision in my opinion as there was another defender slightly in front and to the side of Klose who could have stopped him if he got past). To my disappointment, Nigerian forward Ike Uche, who was looking dangerous on the break, left after 20 minutes due to a hamstring injury. Then just before the half ended Getafe went up on a great individual goal by Contra, who scored their late game tier in leg one. Bayern pushed forward looking for the equalizer against Getafe's 10 men but couldn't find it until the 89th minute when Ribery scored. On to extra time where Getafe scored 2 quick goals, within the first 5 minutes, one a long range blast from Casquero, the other by Braulio after Lucio slipped trying to clear a ball. With Getafe's fans in a frenzy that their miracle would take place, goalie Roberto Abbondanzieri made one of the worst mistakes you'll ever see, he dropped an easy ball and it fell perfectly for Luca Toni to push it into the net in the 115th minute. Bayern were desperately looking for another goal which would send them through but Getafe, as they'd done the whole game defended well until injury time of the extra time with Bayern goalie Oliver Kahn joining the attack, a cross came in and Toni got a head to it and nodded it into the net! Amazing comeback for Bayern but cruel ending for a Getafe team who bravely held on so long after that unjustified sending off. The drama and excitement which makes us all football fans! |

You've described the game quite well Supereagle. It was an incredible match but you had to feel sorry for Getafe. Twice in the game, at the end of regulation and at the end of extra time, they were a minute away from winning yet both times Bayern found a way to score. An emotional but ultimately deflating loss for Getafe. They did get a bad break with the sending off which was an absurd call but they held on so well against one of the true giants of European football. Abbondanzieri had a horrible game apart from that dropped ball which caused Toni's goal in extra time. He was put in the lineup to provide experience but his errors cost his club a semifinal berth in their first European competition. Nice goals from Mutu in Fiorentina's win at PSV. Rangers also did the job and went on the road and won too in Portugal. A rare road win in Europe for a Rangers team which notoriously are poor travelers. |

I thought it was tough when Sevilla went out of the Champions League in the previous round on penalty kicks. But that had nothing on the cruelty meter on the way Getafe lost. Abbondanzieri was the villan of it all unfortunately for him. Like rosarino wrote, Abbondanzieri was put in to the game likely because of his greater experience. But Ustari, the clubs other goalkeeper I think would have been more secure on crosses as he was in leg 1 in Germany. What a shame for a valiant effort from Getafe who now have to rebound for next week's Copa del Rey Final. And injuries are starting to pile up for them too. |

I think Rangers are getting pretty accustomed this season to beating teams who play in green and white hoops! They're a decent side and they've had some excellent results in Europe this season, in addition to this impressive win in Portugal they also eliminated Red Star Belgrade from the CL, beat Lyon 3-0 in France, beat the German champions Stuttgart and drew with Barcelona in the CL group phase. Although they were squeezed out into the UEFA Cup, since then they have accounted for Panathinaikos, Werder Bremen and Sporting Lisbon. That's a good cup run by anyone's standards and although rosarino points out that they can't be relied on to win away from home, we should note that they've only lost 3 games on the road and none of them were shameful defeats (2-0 in Barcelona, 3-2 in Stuttgart, 1-0 in Bremen). That's a better away record than their arch-rivals Celtic! By the end of their semi with Fiorentina they will have played 18 European matches this season. Whether they'll get to play a 19th remains to be seen, but it's all extremely worthwhile experience for their players. They're actually on course for a quadruple this season, which would be an immense achievement. If they do get to the final, we should prepare ourselves in Manchester for an enormous tartan invasion! |

What an amazing game between Bayern and Getafe. I don't know what to add which hasn't already been discussed here, Getafe were sooooo close but German teams to their credit just never give up. Yes Abbondanzieri did have a nightmare of a game and that isn't what you'd expect from a goalie of his calibre. You could see how much it all effected him at the end too. Heartbreaking for Getafe but sometimes you win by losing. The team will learn from this experience and they've definitely won over fans around the globe and not just in Spain. http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news?slug=reu-...uters&type=lgns

Good comment Merengue, Getafe did win a lot of friends with their play on Thursday against Bayern. It is also good to see Bayern's players so generous in their praise for the club too. That game had me on the edge of my seat and I think that was the first game of the 2007-8 season where I could say that. Tough luck for Getafe but playing with 10 men and then losing to injury Uche, their attacking player most suited for counter attacking when down a man, was a handicap just too big to overcome. Bayern Munich were like one of those Terminator robots in those Arnold Schwarzenegger movies, just when you think you've finished them off they come back to life! An amazing game and hats off to both teams for their effort. |

I don't follow La Liga closely, but I think Getafe just became my favorite team. What a gutsy performance after the early, unjustified sending off. What a roller coaster of emotions throughout. Thanks for posting the Bayern quotes, Merengue. Very gracious on their part. |

So the trend of home teams giving up a tying own goal in European cup competitions continues, though Lucio's wasn't as aggregious or as late as Riise's. Only caught a few minutes of the Rangers-Fiorentina scoreless draw. Anything worthwhile in that one? From what I saw of Bayern-Zenit -- and I have to admit I dozed off in the middle -- Bayern should have won, own goal or not. Malefeev denied them several times, and Bayern certainly missed Toni. Podolski is in a funk. Arshavin's late and unnecessary yellow, which means he'll miss the return leg, and Toni's return for Bayern still leaves door reasonably open for the Bavarians. |

haha, that seems to have been a trend this week watching European games, falling asleep during them! Didn't someone else claim they fell asleep during one of the Champions League games? shelsoccer is right to point out that Bayern really did miss Luca Toni, especially after Miroslav Klose broke his nose in the game. 1-1 is a great result for Zenit to take home but I still wouldn't bet against Bayern, especially a Bayern with Toni and Ribery. I also didn't see Rangers-Fiorentina but read where Fiorentina controlled the game. 0-0 then isn't a bad result for Rangers, just as it is for Barcelona in the Champions League, but unlike Barcelona, Rangers did not have better of the play in their home stadium. That should concern them heading to Florence. |

We have a cinderella team this year and it is Zenit St. Petersburg who destroyed Bayern Munich 4-0 in Russia today. Yes that score is correct. Very nice to see a team make it's first ever European Final and to do it by beating one of Europe's heavyweights. As I write this Fiorentina and Rangers are beginning extra time after their second game ended like the first, 0-0. |
